Test flying the old Pietenpol again.

After extensive overhaul on several systems, I now have the old Pietenpol in pretty good mechanical shape. Here we are testing my work. Remember, every time someone subscribes and rings the little bell another student pilot will get their wings. 😎

Wow so cool! I bet this engine draws some good 100 hp at least! It’s amazing that it can have a single pilot on the hind seat and be balanced and also another pilot on the front and still without center of gravity disturbance-in the Cessna when I lean forward I can already feel how the plane needs to be retrimmed!

Really enjoy watching your videos. Learned a lot! I am currently restoring a Piet built by Bill Rewey in 1971. Your videos on carb rebuild were priceless. I'm a fan of your work and preaching!! Lol

Hi Ron, thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it very much. An affirmation like yours makes my efforts with these videos worthwhile. I have heard of the Piet. that Bill built and have heard good reports on the build quality. Best of luck with the restoration and keep me informed of the progress as you go along. Dwain

Nice video. I have a couple corvair engines in the garage that I plan on putting in a Piet. I hope the stars align and it actually happens someday... Love the flying shots from where the pilot sits...

Hi Sam, Corvair's are good Pietenpol engines for sure. Try and make that "Someday" happen today if you can Sam because "Someday" has a way of never happening. You can start small and work into it a little at a time. If you can find a way to get started then your project will have a way of picking up momentum and develop a life of its own. Keep me informed OK? Best wishes my friend.

Hi Kjell, yes, I have had the thrill of starting an OS Max with a razor-sharp APC prop and have suffered the delights of getting flesh neatly sliced to perfection requiring stitches tenderly administered by an emergency room doctor. The worst part was the model airplane fuel soaking the wound. 🙂 Trust me, starting any airplane weather model or full scale requires attention to detail, the consequences for not doing so can be dire. 🙂 Thanks for watching, my friend.

Started my Piet today for first time in 22 years ( WR-1 ). Ran absolutely beautiful after cleaning the entire fuel system, going though the mags & setting timing at 30b. An A65-8-F with slick mags from a 46 TaylorCraft. I believe they used the TaylorCraft 74x43 metal prop? It will only turn 2000 rpm static. Do you think that will be enough RPM? I'm not an aircraft mechanic but becoming one on this project. I've been an ASE cert. auto master-tech for 44 years and have over 1600 hrs. flying ultralites ( Flightstars & MX's ) this is my first "REAL" airplane. I value your opinion very much.

Hi Ron, I am glad your little continental engine is running so well. Kind of makes a pilot get "Happy Feet" when they cooperate fully. Is N2094 your Piet? Sure is a good looking airplane that you must be proud of. You asked about your propeller and so I will answer with what little knowledge I might have. My experience with the continental A65 goes back to the late 1960s and most, not all, but most of the little four bangers I have dealt with were using Sensenich wooden propellers. I can not recall an A65 Continental engine with a wooden propeller that was not turning either a 72-CK-42 or a 72-CK-44. The Sensenich data for engine prop airplane combinations call for either the 72/42 or 72/44 props for the A65. The 74/44 you mention is used on the C85s according to Sensenich data. Now with that said, I don't see why your 74/43 propeller would not fly your Piet. but it may or may not fly your airplane the way you will be pleased with. Your A65 Continental is rated at 65 hp at 2350 rpm at sea level with a cruise of 2150 rpm. Most A65s propped per Sensenich standards will not turn full rated rpm static so I am not surprised that your engine will only turn 2000 rpm static and to tell you the truth as I perceive it, 2000 rpm static with your 74/43 prop does not sound bad at all Ron. A toll free call to Sensenich would be my suggestion so you can talk to one of their engineers with all the data at his fingertips. It could answer a multitude of questions and ease your mind concerning your engine prop combination. I read that Drew Fidoe had a Fly Baby with an A65 turning a 76-ck-44 prop and claimed it had great thrust and a fair cruise. I think your engine prop combo would fly OK but I would still research with Sensenich for your own piece of mind. I hope this helps. Dwain

Thanks so much Dwain. Your knowledge and experience is priceless to me. My plane is N2094. ( WR-1 ) The first plane Bill Rewey built. He built her sister ( NX17WR ) in 82. My concern was that the engine was ok and developing enough power? Or was it because of too much prop? I'm preparing to put the wings back on now so we will found out soon. Lol. After your input and checking with Sensenich I feel confident it will be fine. I'm 5'8" and 172lbs. my wife is 4'9" and 105 lbs. My grass runway is 2600 x 75 at 720 above msl. Check out Nulltown Wingnuts on Face Book. You have a friend in east central Indiana. If you don't mind I'll keep in touch on my progress? This is a great learning process for me and my wife. I didn't understand why a metal prop would run more length and pitch but after studying sectional density and other prop influences I get it now. The metal prop is 10 lbs. heavier which might be good being that Piet's are known for tail heavy. My next step is to measure from center crank to ground (plane leveled) minus 9 inches to avoid ground strike as Sensenich recommends. Please keep the videos coming! Ron PS. Glad to see your health is improving.

Hi Dr. Faiz ul Hassan, officially it has the Continental A-65 rated at 65HP but this engine has high compression pistons and rings and the Stromberg carburetor is jetted for a 75. My guess is that at full power it is producing 80 or more horsepower. It really is a strong engine. 🙂
