Test Drive of Datsun Roadster with Miata 1.8L Engine Swap
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I filmed an uneventful drive in my newly-completed engine transplant. The point of this transplant was to make an reliable daily-driver out of the car, so uneventful drives are the point. But, it's got a lot more power than it used to, as well. Unfortunately, the camera turned itself off just as I was jetting onto the freeway to try some speed. It was fun, though. Trust me. You can see a detailed journal of my built here: www.orange-claw-hammer.com/car...

@charlieflint - Thanks for the kind words. Glad the alternator tip is helping you. I am still enjoying the reliability and smooth power that this swap provides. I drive like a little old lady, but in the right hands the car is quite quick off the line.
@hypotheticalmonkey - Thanks, dude. You should see it know. The only gauge installed is a voltage gauge from Jaguar. I'm refurbishing the rest to work better with the swap.
poorfatjames - Not difficult at all -- I did it all with hand tools (and a hoist) in my backyard. I used the Miata 5-speed transmission and the stock Datsun rear end. I was planning at one point to narrow an RX-7 LSD rear end, but after driving the car a while, I decided just to keep driving and not tinker any more.
@gatzuberserker - It's 1.75" tube (the exhaust has to go through a hole in the X-member under the car, so diameter is limited) going to a generic "Mustang" "turbo muffler". The sound is nice, but I'm getting tired of the volume, so I'm probably going to put something much more quiet on it soon.
@tomakze - After all this time, I still haven't hooked up the speedometer, so I don't know how fast it is. But, it is much faster "by the seat of the pants". More importantly to me, it is smoother, quieter and no longer smokey and smelly.
@c0c0asauce - I hear you. I wanted a no-weld swap, which excluded all the Nissan engines I knew of. Thanks.
@jfbrink No worries! I really need to start working on my swap, but everything else keeps breaking on the car and consequently it is always being put off. Oh well, I now have a new suspension system, steering system, 300zxtt brakes, etc! Kinda silly considering the wimpy worn out powerplant! I am very jealous of yours! How are you planning on hooking up the speedo? are you somehow keeping the original one?
You're missing one of your gauges. Just FYI.
Hey ya, I just bought a Datsun Roadster with a 1990 Miata engine and 5 speed. Question, how did you hook up your speedometer and tachometer?
nice swap. was it hard? did you use the datsun trans and rear end?
Do you have a build thread for this engine swap? I'm about to put a Miata 1.8 into a Datsun 1200.

Sure do. Check out the link in the description above. It includes templates, wiring diagrams, the works.

Totally missed that...thanks! Reading through it now, where in So Cal are you? I'm building mine in Long Beach.
what kind of exhaust system are you using?
Did u have a hard time with the wiring , I'm interested in swapping a 1.6 into my 81 corolla

No problem at all. In fact, if you follow the link in the description above (I just fixed the link), there is a custom ECU wiring diagram that should get you most of the way there. The diagram strips out all the unnecessary stuff and just includes what the engine needs to run properly.
woulda kept it nissan, still respect
so, how fast is it with the new powerplant? big difference?
