Thank you. We didn't realize we had a three way and we thought it was a bad switch. Followed your instructions and TADA! light turns on again!

I have a four way configuration which was working intermittently. I replaced the 4 way switch and the circuit is still working intermittently. Does this suggest a bad 4 way switch or a problem with one of the other switches in the circuit. How to proceed. Thanks

Hey I have a question I was using my multimeter and I switched it to AC current and used my red probe to check voltage on the switch while it was on and then there was a spark and the room turned off I really messed up what should I do?

  • @Know-How-Now

Check your breaker, it likely tripped. If your multi-meter has a fuses, check them. You might want to buy a book on AC circuits 101 or borrow one from the library. If you are grounded and touch the hot wire of your home's electrical system, there is enough current to stop your heart.

@@trillali2724 yeah I was going to say look at your breaker and see if it's in the middle of being turned off or on. That would mean it is tripped! Also there's a good chance you blew a light bulb? Also wherever you had your spark, look and make sure it did not burn through a wire! But my opinion, please do like he recommended and read up on electricity before you mess with it anymore!

Thank you for commenting. Please explain why you need to test for continuity too. Also, what is the difference between continuity and reading 1-2 Ohms on a resistance setting on a multimeter?

I don't understand your explanation. I've spent over 20 years working in the field with electricity/electronics. I've never had to use continuity to determine if a switch is bad. I prefer resistance setting, I can see if the resistance is fluctuating..... a sure sign that you have a bad contact.

Using the continuity setting is not wrong, though it is not a "must use". If you look at my mulitmeter in the video, it doesn't evening have a continuity setting.
