Tesla Truck - why we're all wrong about the Cybertruck design

Ғылым және технология

After the reaction to the Tesla Truck, a growing trend is showing that we're wrong about the Cybertruck design. Going in we knew that Tesla's pickup truck design would be unique and stand out. Elon had been warning us that it looked like something from Bladerunner after all, but that didn't stop the collective freak-out we saw in the media and online. That is ... until about 48 hours later when a common refrain started showing up: "It's kind of growing on me." Why?

Like you channel but not a fan of HyperChange. You do know that he pitches stocks besides talk about the tech. I find this extremely dangerous and disingenuous. For example, suggesting to buy TSLA, of course its at highs now, but he suggested it at 350 saying its gonna hit 10k then it went down to 180. Same for NIO suggest it at 11-12 went down to 1.5. No problem with being a Tesla fan boy or NIO enthuisiast but there is something in suggesting stocks and doing financial projections that over simplifies and dismisses risk. Of course, Gal says he is a long term investor, which means he or she has no idea wtf is going on in the market.

Dent resistance isn't necessarily that good from what we have been shown so far. Yes, they had their demo, which is enough to make us certain that it will survive a door being opened into it, but their demo didn't do all that much damage. We have no idea how the cybertruck will react in higher energy collisions, and when you do finally get a dent in it, it will be very difficult to get it out again.

As a serious Design Engineer, I tried to imagine driving up to a meeting in the Cybertruck. To me (at first) I did not want everybody to ask "why did you get this"? After all, I wanted to be the center of attraction. Then one day, right out of the blue I decided that Function over Form is what is important in engineering and from an engineering perspective, this truck design nailed it. From the standpoint of Strength, it had to be this shape Now I love it. Another thing also hit me. I am never going to wear a tie again with my suits. Instead, I have designed a different color for my shirts that makes wearing a tie impossible. "Why dont you wear a tie" they may ask me...simple, ties cannot be worn this shirt. No more conformity for me. I am as unique as this truck and am proud to be so...thanks Elon.

That's because they're not needed - other cars will be afraid to get too close. Actually, I think this is just because it's a prototype. Side mirrors are mandatory in the United States, but not so in some other countries. I remember seeing a video review of a car (I think an EV) being sold in Europe or the UK that had side cameras rather than mirrors. Teslas, of course, have side cameras, but in the U.S. they must also have mirrors.

I’m old enough @ 60 to remember Volkswagen’s “The Thing”. When I first say one I thought it was butt ugly. Over time they grew on me. Quite a few years have passed since the last one was made and whenever I see one now I think “cool”. They’ve even reached something of a cult icon status these days. I was shocked and disappointed with the cybertruck at first. The more I looked at it the more it grew on me. In looking at the specs and comparing it to my ‘04 Chevy Silverado it’s roughly about the same size yet outclasses it in every way! 🤔 I showed it to my mom (79) and son (30). My mom said it was ugly. My son said it was different, but okay. Five days after the reveal I put in my order for a tri-motor cybertruck. 😃👍🏽

ThePsajkou style has no practical use, but when the style is *determined* by its function and works within the constraints of practicality, never the other way around, there’s no reason not to style it. The hard-edged origami design that the functionality of the body-frame required resembles 80s cyberpunk designs, so why *not* lean into that and let all the trimmings add to the cyberpunk look? If they didn’t want to do that they’d have come up with a name other than cybertruck

I think the Cybertrunk is the hottest ride hands down! It only took a few minutes for the shock of it to wear off. Then I loved the design. Tesla nailed it! So right about Blade Runner. I loved it when it first came out. Harrison Ford is and was my favorite actor. Siskel and Ebert butchered it when they reviewed it. I couldn't understand why people hated it, and I was a kid then. I've noticed, even as a kid, that many times a new thing that I strongly dislike when I'm first exposed to it, like a song, a building, or an activity, can turn into a thing I really like, over time. That happened to me with EVs. I've also noticed this can be true regarding people - for example, a woman I do not find at all attractive at first can eventually become a woman I find extremely attractive, and this flip can happen over a very brief period of time, so brief that I am aware the change is taking place as it happens. I think the key to this is when a new thing (or person) has some aspect that irritates me in a way that does not allow me to stop thinking about it. It's easy to not change your mind about something if you consider and dismiss it out of hand and never think about it again. The fact that I continue to think about something or someone I don't like is an indication to me that my subconscious recognizes there is more to them than what I see on the surface. The more I examine it, the more used to it I become, the more I learn about it, the more likely it is that I will discover value I missed in my initial assessment - but there has to be something "extra" there that keeps gnawing at me, even if I don't know what that "extra" bit is at first.

When I witnessed it's demonstrated strength and capabilities, I was impressed. I am also a fan of Halo, Blade Runner, and futuristic/post-apocalyptic movies, books, stories, etc.; so, the style began growing on me since the first reveal. I was born and raised in Texas and have driven pickup trucks my entire life; and, I understand and agree with the need for renewable energy. So I developed an aversion to green vehicles. At some point I needed a truck that could push snow, and the only one I could find in my price range and timetable was... you guessed it- GREEN! I bought the truck. I moved snow. I hauled stuff. It did what I needed it to do. Trucks are about utility and function, not looks! So lets rig up a plow on this puppy, and you can count me in! The broad acceptance of the car came after 1895 when the design changed from motorized carriage to something we are all familiar with. With this design, Tesla marks an inflection point. Later we will recognize this as a required step to settle the future of transport. This is clearly an out-of-the-box design and lots of people will have difficulties to accept this in the beginning. The years to come will show more of these designs, as this will freed us from a form that is dictated by retired technology. This is a remarkable era and I am glad that I am part of it.

I agree that it looks very good for those who need the functionality of a truck (for work or play), but that doesn’t necessarily extend across the board, with regards to its aesthetics. It will be interesting to see what happens to Tesla pricing, which has changed after the release of the Model 3 in particular, as the Y and the Cyber Truck roll out. If the pricing changes it could very well sway buyers who were going to buy a mid-range Cyber Truck, for reasons not primarily based on functionality, towards other Tesla models. Regardless, should I ever need an ATV, I’m going for a Cyberquad! That thing looks amazing. The back end is straight off the F-117, as well as other stealth aircraft, and that’s just awesome. =)

@@Got2Bespoke I've been wondering about that as well. The price point of the truck with the technology inside it (batteries, motors, etc) it seems likely the model 3 and y will drop in price by the time this truck is released. The manufacturing costs may be majorly reduced for batteries and that may be why the tesla truck is only just now being released.

  • @Got2Bespoke

    @Got2Bespoke

Blake Heard when I was going through the test drive and research before purchasing my Tesla in September, I was told by staff that price drops in the other models are expected when the Y is released as it did for the S and X when the 3 was released. It makes sense as there is a significant difference in price between the 3 and the other two cars. The only different here is that the CT is supposed to start around the 3’s starting price. Then again, there’s also a lot to be done (to design, price, etc?) before the CT goes from one (or two?) working prototypes to being mass produced. Certainly prices will drop as technology and production gets better/more efficient, competitors crop up (Rivian, etc.). I have to wonder if all of the potential changes are the reason that the deposit for the CT was so low. If they accepted more, they’d be under much more scrutiny when it came to how long that interest free loan 😉 was outstanding and how much it might change from this point to when they start delivering. Thanks for replying, cheers!

So we learned to associate toughness with that shape after we watched films, saw them off-road, etc. Now there's an entirely new level of toughness. We will learn to associate this new shape with toughness. The TCT is an instant classic. Might not have collector value though because they will sell a zillion of them and they'll stay on the road forever looking new, never rusting, denting, breaking down, or even scratching much. Others will follow, but this will always be the first.

My car broke down recently so I already needed a new one, but I’ve decided to get a junker replacement to hold me for a couple years as I wait.

The VW bug was ugly at first but was a great little car, I remember when I was younger( in my 60's) some folks bashed it for it's looks and size. now it had the longest production run . The cybertruck may be in the same arena, I did not care for it's looks but, so many great features. Stainless steel body panels that is what caught my eye. I hate waxing my truck, I need a ladder to properly do the job. The cybertruck will allow me to go on trails with my less worry about the body scraping from branches and brush. It also snows where I live , most truck here have rusting issue so I have to stay on top of keeping my truck clean from salt or deicer used on roads ways. So I reserved one it will be my first electric vehicle. I live in a small town with no chargers, I plan on putting in a Tesla charger.

they have already tested, simulation, matematics...one thing i think will be problematic, who will repair that steel in a small crash...because it will bend, maybe using flames on it... i don't know...the second issue in case of crash on water how do you brake that glass, impossible... maybe better make it amphibious...like military stuff...

I'm a jeep kind of guy, so this kind of simplified, utilitarian design really appeals to me. The first thing I thought of when I saw the shape was a rear axle truss like the one on my Jeep. All it needs are some go-fast holes.

So if we start driving this cybertruck, what will be the next design like new model? Is it going to be a box? The thing is that the truck is not that ugly, it could have been better if the designer had a little details, like repetition of small lines across the fender, trunk, and the side of the doors. Don’t throw away details is very important. just a little design should have been added. Let the designers respect ART! Is part of life.

While our first impression is often the right one, in this case it is impossible to know the "why" until the truck gets a real chance to preform over a long enough period of time.
