This pie business should have a liner in their order policy like: Pies ordered cannot be cancelled as they are perishables. And request 50% deposit to be paid for orders of 30 pies and more.

Sometimes it's difficult to do that when doing business with big companies. They could dictate how they do payments, for example. Small businesses usually just agree because of the amount they are potentially making.

To be fair, I do agree, bailing on an order this large is despicable. But what the MSM is leaving out, is the fact that Tesla hired a third party vendor, Flavor City, whom goes directly to small local food businesses/pop-ups/restaurants, etc. They are the ones who actually failed to do sound business. Either way, Elon cleaned it up. Kudos to both Tesla and The Giving Cafe.

Tesla wouldn’t even notice this much money missing from one manager’s petty cash pool. It’s right that they made it right. That’s all that needs to happen.

Cheapest "oops" for Tesla to fix, and even if she didn't get the $2k, I don't think she could have gotten this much positive advertising and PR if she paid a firm $20,000 👍

@@lizacrochets98 Elon should never have to deal with food vendor issues. There are many people at Tesla that have authority other than Elon who could have dealt with this issue. In the first news coverage, the business owner talked about how she called and emailed after Tesla cancelled, and no one responded, that's why she posted on social media. While she was getting interviewed for the news was the first time Tesla reached out to her again after radio silence.

When she said she doesn't have time for them, she didn't mean, she doesn't care, about them, which is the nuanced meaning. She meant she didn't have literal time and that point in time.
She's getting the $2K from Tesla AFTER the story aired. Still, good on Elon for paying this small business expense.

She's doing business the "old fashioned way" where you take the order, invoice, provide service, get paid at the end. Unfortunately, we live in a time where there's often no honor, every man for himself. She'll have to start requiring at least a 50% deposit.

Did I hear $2,000 dollars - how embarrassing. Any Manager would have immediately paid the $2,000 dollars if any employee made a commitment - even if it was an error. The reputation of the business is more valuable that a few thousand dollars. Elon will be having some serious conversations with that Department!

Apparently it wasn't Tesla. It was a 3rd party vendor. But yes, its Teslas responsibility.
I hope this restaurant owner is booked and busy till next year.
She has a great attitude.
Its wild that Tesla tried to blame the 1st employee and say they didnt have authority to make such an order for an event, but then another different employee who did apparently have authority went and doubled the initial order after the fact only to cancel it later. They have a lot of miscommunication going on

When I first heard about this, I thought: "Elon Musk - what a no-good SOB". But then someone on the inside told me that he called the person associated with this transaction and told them in no uncertain terms that this kind of thing would not be tolerated. Kudos to Musk for not publicly blasting this employee. He has bigger fish to fry than worrying about a low-level event manager who canceled an order of apple pies.

I got inside info saying that said Elon Musk was worried that this pie maker was going to take him down. So he called people responsible for this crying ordering them to fix it so he won’t get ruined by a pie maker while rolling on the floor and crying like a 4 year old toddler.

think its close to 4 dollars after tax and what now lol.., also after this she probably made 10x her normal numbers on top of the tip people gave her for the troubles... I just hope she shared it with her staff, which will be the ones that take in the most pain. I remember another place that got viral in the bay because of a homeless lady that spit at the workers during covid. FINALLY! A good-news-happy-ending story… no matter if the road to getting there was twisty & had a few bumps! The bottom line is a small business owner with a good work ethic was not trampled over & “left for dead” as we sometimes read about. Kudos all around 👌
Yeah, I think the right thing to do was to pay up, instead of just ordering more huge orders. I mean, I'm sure they would be happy for big orders, but they also need to operate their regular business too, and she said they turned away other business the first time, in order to take Tesla's order. So they don't have infinite hands to make everything.~

No, 25% is enough to cover costs. You don't want to chase a big customer away.

I don't think she cancelled on other customers... just that she had to refuse some big orders that came after because they were planning on the tesla order.
How much did she ask for deposit before purchasing the ingredients for such a large order? Last minute cancellation does happen. Next time please ask more deposit. Glad everything works out well.

First, what a sweet lady. Second, major props to San Jose residents. Third, just to give them due credit, good job Tesla and Elon Musk for reimbursing the costs without much fanfare. Fourth, as soon as the Tesla decided to cancel, they should've realized that they threw the bakery under the bus. A screenshot of the text Ms. Rasetarinera got showed that it was basically just "sorry, thanks anyway" without any hint that Tesla will reimburse. Had she not made the social media post, the community wouldn't have rallied behind them. Now it just looks like Tesla got checkmated instead of taking leadership on making good their error.

No, the initial order was 2000 pies, and the Tesla employee called to double it to 4000 pies. At $4 a pie, that's $16k. $2000 was the cost of the ingredients she had to buy for the order that then got cancelled.

But I dunno, if all of her normal sales got put on hold to only do the Tesla order she may not be able to give a steep discount. There may have been a tiny discount, but she really wouldn't have any reason to discount a large order by roughly half.
Small businesses should stay away from doing business with large corporations like tesla.
This is what I expected would happen.

They throw money at third party to make it happen and say "we have budget of $xxxx and there will be xyz people on date aa.bb.cccc - make it happen" and don't give a damn about anything except for the time and place to arrive on requested date, nor do they micromanage what, where, who, what food (except for allergies) or how.
