First thing I noticed as well. Looks beautiful inside! I’m currently in planning stages of my DS to receive the 48v hsky unit from BigBattery.com. Little different set up for the single unit but I think it’s going to work out nicely.

@@Tomthormeyer Big difference! I did a range test on pavement and got 24 miles with 25% battery capacity left. Next, I will do a range test on the farm for a comparison so stay tuned. Hope that helps.

👍 nice to see there are more lithium pack alternatives. I'm currently building another stol plane. I'm planning on electric in it also. Will be using a 40 HP 89# of torque. With Peak efficiency at 3000 rpm And 4 Tesla packs. These packs are flatter allowing two in each wing. This Plane will be used mostly for competition. But with its glide ratio and the motor regen capability. I'm hoping for close to two hours of flight time. Which at top Cruise speed should get me around 250 miles. More than enough to take a leisurely early morning or Twilight light flight.

The led acid batteries need airflow because of the off-gassing. LiPo needs airflow but because of the heat dissipation. So don't seal these up without giving them a way to get rid of excess heat. Use a porthole with a small fan that turns on at 75 degrees or something based on the specification.

In addition to all that below, my set up does not use a bus bar, just a single terminal post for positive and another for the neg.

Man i love what you ve done with your cart! The welding and fabrication is impressive. I would like to add suspension to my rear axes and wandering. Would the shocks alone do well by themselves without the top links?? Im trying to minimize the amount of welding. Also where would find the top links ? Robby

Hi Robby, you have to have the top link to keep the whole axle from swaying side to side. It also keeps your axle from rotating forward when you hit the gas. You can find the top links called heim joints on ebay. You can find the weldable heim joint brackets on ebay is well. Hope that helps! Good luck.

Hey HH, love the video! Great information you shared here, this is something that I definitely plan to do in the future on my club car DS hunting ride. Quick question for you. Are you at all concerned about the #6 AWG wiring on the Anderson cables with the high torque motor and controller upgrade? I personally have the same motor and a 600 amp alltrax controller which both recommend #2 AWG cabling.

I had the same concern too but so far everthing is working great. I shortened the provided cables as much as possible since they were extra long but you could create your own 2awg cables with anderson plugs going to your bus bar. Keep in mind that the short internal cables are still 6 awg so you can’t completely eliminate the smaller cable. With that said, I haven’t had any problems in my initial use and my motor runs about 40 degrees cooler on lithium vs lead acid! I plan to torture test them on my next trip to the farm. I want to pull a heavy trailer loaded with wood to see how it performs and whether I can throw the breakers. So far so good, lots of pepp, power, and range with a little more speed thrown in. It’s a win all around. Improved under seat storage space, better power to weight ratio, better handling, less wear on suspension and brakes.

I removed all that so the cart will actually move while charging. I either put it in neutral or turn the key off. Hope that helps.

Granted, not sure what all tools it would be able to power but certainly worth putting pen to paper to find out. Plus multiple charging capabilities is also nice.

Check them out and if you are handy you can build the best set on your own. All you need are the 3.2v blue blocks and add a Daly BMS and you are set. It all comes from China on Alibaba but all lithium batteries in the US pretty much comes from there anyway. Much cheaper doing it DIY too. That’s what I am doing next time. Good luck!!

The “main out” cables on the diagram will go to your solenoid and controller. This diagram was just meant to show the difference in pre-controller setup using lithium vs lead acid. I hope that helps!

I like the electric idea you can really sneak up on game with it! They'd hear a quad coming from a mile away. I'm thinking my electric geo metro project would be better served with golf cart parts as most car drivetrains and axles are going to be way too big and heavy. I'm just afraid the state's brain will break when they still demand I go for emissions testing and they cant find the tailpipe.

Hey..Nice job! I was wondering, are you concerned about water/debris getting into those bus bars and such? Your wheel wells are open to inside that battery compartment. Also, your charging port is exposed. For an off road cart, that would concern me.

Not concerned about the bus bars but it can get really dirty inside so it needs to be cleaned. I pressure wash the inside but avoid direct hits on controller and battery boxes. Never had a problem. Also, there is a cover that goes over the charging port when not in use. Hope that helps!

How did you mount your battery monitor and temperature gauge? I kind of want to do the same thing (mount up high so easy to view). Can't tell from your video and don't see any brackets on your amazon store. Looks like you may have used velcro? Also, for your battery monitor, did you wire it through your key switch so screen only on when key on? OR, since you have on/off switches on your batteries, did you simply wire per instructions and turn off your batteries when not using so no power to accessories? I bought the same monitor and planning to install this weekend.

Hi Troy, I took a metal junction box cover and bent it so my monitor would angle down a bit. I then wedged it in place for a tight fit. I used double sided tape to make it stick and so far it’s been great. I did not wire into key switch because it draws little power, goes dark when not in use, and I flip off the battery breakers when not in use for extended time. It’s good to mount high where its protected from sun and rain since I dont think it’s very weatherproof. I love mine! Good luck and let me know how it goes.!

I got almost 25 miles on pavement with 20% battery left. I would expect less for off-road use but have yet to run a full test. Hope to do soon.

What's up HH glad to see another video and as always very informative. I was thinking of getting the same kit. I have a few questions that hopefully you can answer. Do you think the winch is going to work with that voltage regulator with the about us draw, I know you had it hooked up on 2 batteries (16v) and if you can tow that trailer with a load to see if the BMS will shut down. Finally can you do a diy infrared light with solar for our night scopes. Great job keep up the informative videos👏👏👏

Stay tuned as I’m hoping to test out the cart at the farm this weekend. The winch worked fine at home but I didnt put it under load. On 16volts it came on immediately. On my 12v reg I have to hold the button down for about 3 seconds while the lights blink before it comes on. I think it’s delayed because it’s loading the capacitor? It does seem to be straining the regulator a bit so I’m thinking I might find a slighly higher voltage regulator in the 16 volt range (if they even make them) and connect the winch to it separately. It would be an easy install. My current 12volt reg is 30 amps and hasn’t blown a fuse but not sure about the start delay and why my lights shut off while pressing the winch button. I’m still getting used to this setup but it’s been great so far. I want to do a range test on the farm. I got 25 miles at home on pavement with 25% battery life left. If I get half that at the farm I’ll be happy. My motor runs a lot cooler now too👍. Keep an eye out for some future updates. Thanks for watching!

I’m ordering an upgraded 60amp 12v regulator as my first one blows a fuse with lights on while using the winch. It’s a 30amp and my new one is 60amp so that should work a lot better. Whole cart is working great except for the 12v regulator which will be fixed soon. Just wanted to give you an update.

Upgrading my cart with Navitas AC conversion kit and stumbled across your video. Looks like you live in our neighborhood. Ha! My batteries are about done so now would be the time to make this kind of change. Did you look at the 48V 6.4kWh Li-ion Kit they offer? It does not state in on their website but their video for 48V Model 3 Li-ion Kit states that system has less capacity (4.6 kWh). I believe you said one of the reasons you did this particular setup vs the 6.4 kWh set-up was for additional storage capacity under your seat, correct?

Yep, I remember having to extend it with some light gauge wire...real easy to do. I think if you look closely at the wire you can find the neg/pos marking. Hope that helps!

Your Amazon store has a link to the RMP 3003 H22 Aluminum Diamond Tread Sheet, 12 Inch x 36 Inch . How many of these did you need for your conversion?

Hey Handy Hunter! I've checked out your tube long ago and it helped me with my conversion, thx, very appreciated! Year plus later I have issues, was wondering if all is good with your set up? I did mine set up similar but your's is by far a whole another level! A couple of questions for you. I have the BigBattery 36v gator max kit 120Ah 5 kW! My charger never shuts off, according to them that is correct. How about yours? Also fully charged shows 45.5-46v, cart is a 36v. Does your's go well over 48v fully charged? My cart stopped running, appears to be controller, spoke with a mechanic and he believe the controller has been getting too hot and the resistors are burnt, wondering it it's from to much voltage! I am getting the full voltage on cart parts using multimeter! Emailed Big Batt. about this and back initially on set up about to much voltage at full charge they stated their computer board inside would not let that much voltage to cart and that even though the charger does not shut off the board will not allow it to over charge. Does any of this happen with your set up?

My charger slows to a trickle as it reaches full charge but never completely shuts off. My 48v pack will hit like 55 volts at full charge so yours is normal for lithium. Have you thought about upgrading to a solid state system vs the coils? You will be amazed at the difference and will work better with yiur lithium set. Hope that helps!

Did you consider just mounting the charger inside the cart since you have so much space for it now? That's what I have been thinking I'll do, so that I just have to plug into any wall outlet anywhere I'm at.

I wanted too but this charger is not waterproof and I pressure wash my cart often. I may upgrade to a new charger in the future as having it mounted onboard is a huge plus...especially since these chargers are very light! If you can do it I would mount it onboard for sure! Thanks for commenting!

Good Afternoon, I have a 94 club car ds that I am wanting to convert to a similar system, I saw the diagram in the video showing the power coming from Buss Bars to main out.. Can you show me how you have the rest of the power wired to the controller, pedometer forward reverse etc? I'll be switching to the lithium when the current batteries are dead.

Hi Jay, that’s why I stopped the diagram where I did because that’s where different brands of carts start showing their differences in how they are wired. Luckily, there are lots of wiring diagrams for DS carts on google or the internet in general. They will show you how to wire the F&R switch, the controller, motor, and throttle. If you are buying a new controller chances are they will have wiring diagrams on their website. Lots of good resources out there that explain it better than I can. I hope that helps and good luck!

Where did you purchase the upgrade motor from? Curious on the price. Thinking about doing a conversion from my gas to electric. Could gain a shit ton of storage. And use for hunting.

I get my diamond plate at a local steel store but you can get it at Home Depot or Amazon as well. I just used stainless metal screws to secure. Good luck!

I took a junction box face plate and cut out an L shaped bracket and then wedged it between the bar. I used double sided tape to get it to stick to the faceplate and it holds well....never comes off. Good luck!

Internal cables too small, breakers tripping constantly, and range drastically shorter way too soon. I would build my own batteries next time.

I am in the middle of a similar conversion. New controller, solenoid, and lion batteries. Did you need a obc bypass for this setup. I cannot get any click out of solenoid but have voltage everywhere.

I don’t have an obc on mine. May want to double check your throttle wiring to make sure it’s turning on the selenoid.

What gauge wire is that going from the battery's to the motor? When i upgraded my motor and controller I had to swap to 2 gauge welding wire I think. Those wires you were holding looked smaller than that. I could be mistaken, just curious. Other than that your build looks awsome. Also what is the total AmH on the new batteries? Cost?

Hi Jace, the gauge from the battery pack to the bus bar is 6ga. From the bus bar to controller and motor is all 2ga. So far it’s been fine and motor runs about 25degrees cooler over lead acid with all 2ga. This pack runs around $2,399. Not cheap but lithium is long life and low maintenance. Have you had any issues running your winch off the bus bar given the regulator is just 60A but the winch can pull 180A at 3000lbs? Or do you just make sure not to pull that hard?

My winch doesnt work off any of the regulators I’ve tried. I’m thinking of adding a new separate battery for the winch. Thinking of building a 16v or even trying a 24v😬. I just know that my winch ran like a scolded dog on 16 volts with lead acid. I’d like to get that performance back. Let me know what you decide.

have you tried towing anything with this? if so are you using the stock motor and how much did you tow?

I’ve towed heavy with the original motor and with my new motor. I abused my old motor which was about 40 years old and can’t believe how well it held up. I have the beast now and it’s great too. I tow a 4x6 trailer loaded with firewood till it can’t hold anymore. It probably weights 2,000lbs completely loaded with big logs. Cart does fine but I’m also pulling on flat land with decent roads. Once you get it moving the amp draw drops a lot. I may be testing some new batteries from RoyPow soon with 200 amp 30sec capability. I hope that helps. Good luck!

The front is fine but the back is a little stiffer from the loss of weight but nothing that bothers me. I usually throw a bag of corn on the back to help a little.

I did a very similar set up and mine is definitely rougher. still thinking about how to take some of the bounce out. Im not doing independent suspension. I've spent enough money...

Great video! I just upgraded my cart to 48V lithium as well. The problem I'm having is that my lithium battery has a separate charging port (different from the main + and - terminals), and the battery shuts off during charging. My understanding is that the coulometer has to stay on in order to have the right information. So I'm not sure how I'm supposed to wire it up.

@@TheHandyHunter my battery is a single 48v pack with a power button. When I plug in my charger, the power button light turns off and no voltage is available at the main + and - terminals. Power is not restored until I unplug the charger from the battery.

Interesting. Did the charger come with the battery? It sounds like a circuit protector on the BMS is being triggered...possibly for overvoltage? How long does it stay on before it turns off? What brand of battery is it?

Offroad or pavement? I think you’ll be fine either way but offroad can be more demanding. I run a 500 amp Alltrax and it’s been fine. You may want to call Bigbattery and ask their thoughts as well. Good luck!

Love this cart. By "charger", do you mean solar panel? Is this a solar cart? How many watts of panels would you need to charge these lithium batteries? Did you mention the total amperage in the battery bank? Thank you 😊

Thank you! It’s a 48v cart and it’s not solar charged. I use a lithium battery charger for 48v. Hope that helps!

Nice conttent for a new subscriber. Can you recommend any sources for the carts themselves - used - or for bare bones carts like this one? We all are searching for value and in adding to our own skills to convert that value to fit our own needs, without breaking the bank for new carts off the standard showroom floor. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I found mine on Craigslist and know of others finding them on Facebook Marketplace. You may also want to check with your local golf cart dealers to keep an eye out for really old ones that they might not want to fool with. Hope that helps.

Looks like you have a 500 amp controller. These packs have a 126A peak discharge so did you have to turn down your controller?

I did not but I rarely hit that high of a draw for very long. It does happen sometimes when pulling a heavy firewood trailer for a while and the breaker will throw on the pack. I just flip it back on and take it easier.

What size controller do you feel is the best for optimizing cart performance without tripping the BMS ?

I run a 500 amp Alltrax and I havent tripped it yet. I want to do a torture test next trip to farm and pull a firewood trailer uphill for a ways and max out the amps to see if I can trip it. We’ll see!

@@TheHandyHunter I finally got around to converting my cart. My batteries were on backorder and took awhile to get. The install went smooth and the cart runs great. I did something very similar to your charging setup, but I used the factory pin handle instead of the Anderson. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the helpful video. Happy hunting!

I have a 2019 yamaha drive 2 what will i need for conversion?

My diagram in the video will work for pretty much any cart. The bus bar setup makes it easy to connect all your power from your batteries and then to your controller, etc. I hope that helps.

Do you have to replace the controller and motor or is it really as simple as replacing the Lead batteries with lithium?

It’s as simple as switching out the batteries! You may need to do a little rewiring to a bus bar for your charger wires and 12v regulator but that’s all very easy. Good luck and let me know how it goes or if you need any help.

Oh, my lithium 48v pack had slightly higher voltage (peaks at 58 volts fully charged) on the pack vs lead acid (a good thing!) so I had to raise my high voltage cutoff on my alltrax controller to the maximum to accommodate the slighly higher voltage and prevent controller shutdown. You’ll want to put it at max if you have a programmable controller.

Hey Handy Hunter. Looking to upgrade an electric cart for a similar build. I live in Appalachia and have some good hills to climb. In any way that you want to reference it, would you say the new motor and controller help climb "X" grade? I know I won't be able to do hill climbs, but with a lift similar to yours I'd like to be able to climb hills around 20 degrees. Thanks.

No problem at all. Are you running lithium or lead acid? LA is 300lb more up hill. If you are concerned you could jump up to 600 amp controller instead of five but not sure you need it. Hope that helps!

So far so good! My only problem is that I can’t find a 12v reg that can push my winch. I think it’s a power hog.

@@TheHandyHunter I was wondering about this. You said in the video you had the winch powered through the converter, did you have it that way with your LA batteries? I have been told more than once that this can not be done due to the amp draw that a winch needs. So far there is no converter I have found that can handle a 12v winch. I also can not seem to find a 48v winch, even though there are stories about them existing. Have you had any luck finding an alternative method?

Hey brother...we think alike. On LA I ran winch on 16volts (2 batt)...ran like a mother. On lithium...At first, the winch worked on the regulator but then blew up. I ordered a bigger one and it only clicks when I try it...won’t work. Currently, my winch won’t work and I’m done trying to find a regulator. I think the only solution is to run a separate 12volt battery in the cart just for the winch. Let me know what you find out...I’m stuck too!

What shunt and monitor do you have I like that and would like to add one on my rig

@@TheHandyHunter I have the same coulometer as you. ?? When you charge your battery does your coulometer show that its charged or do you have to reset the coulometer after every charging cycle? Thank you

It automatically shows the state of charge at any given point. So it will show 100% when battery is full. Hope that helps.

Which torque motor did you go with?

AMD torque “beast” motor. I have a link to it in our Amazon store under my hunting cart. You can see some specs on it there. Real happy with it so far.

They’re overpriced, but I guess worth it if you don’t want to or know how to diy. Their expensive version is $2,300+ for 5.3kWh battery kit. I know you can get 1kWh batteries for close to $100 each so they’re charging $1,000+ for the convenience.

Did you go with a high Touareg low speed motor or high speed motor

High torque...top speed for mine is about 20-24mph

How much of a difference over lead acid was there as far as range, power, etc.....

Got almost 25 miles on pavement at night running lights. I’m hoping to do an offroad range test soon. The power seems stronger I think due mostly to the massive weight loss from lead acid. You can tell a big difference in weight loss. Batteries now charge faster too. Hope that helps!

With all that room just make it a on Board charger and ring terminal with fuse and charge with wall

I plan to do that in the future with a charger that’s waterproof...this one is only weatherproof and I pressure wash my cart often. It would be easy to install and so convenient, especially since these types of chargers don’t weight much. Thanks for commenting!

It’s me again Margaret.. :) Ended up picking up the 1995 EZGO Medalist for $300. No batteries, tray is rusted out, controller is fried. Otherwise it’s solid. I’m going to go very similar to the route you’ve gone here (I’ll buy through your store where I can too!). Question is any tips on systems to upgrade to 48v? I’m considering the Beast 36v/48v, need to get a 48v controller, solenoid, etc. When you upgraded to 48v system did you stay with DC or convert to AC?

I stayed with DC. I’m running an Alltrax 500 amp controller with AMD torque beast DC motor. I think Navistar makes a nice AC setup but if I were you I’d call Plumquick motors and tell them what you want to do and they will tell you what you need...and without upselling you! My only AC experience offroad has been with an RXV and it’s not good. This AC setup has a weird torque curve at low rpms but it will fly at top speed. I may look at AC down the road but would have to research more on best approach. I know the Polaris EV uses an AC setup so it can be done. Hope that helps.

@@TheHandyHunter Thanks boss! My dad has an EV, awesome rig but totally different animal versus these cart builds. So heavy, lots of torque and the 4x4 is great, it has its place for sure. I’ll reach out to Plumquick, had not thought about the low end versus top end application!

You mention lithium ion batteries multiple times but you links are for lifepo4 batteries which are not the same as lithium ion. You really could save a lot if you look at the individual 3.6v lifepo4 cells. thats what I replaced my 6 -6volt LA batteries in my camper with.

You are correct…The batteries I installed were Lit/ion but the ones I now recommend are LifePo4 because they are better. If I had to do it all over I would build my set out of 3.2v blue blocks using a Daly BMS. Thanks for commenting!

I did a test on pavement and got 24.7 miles with 25% battery capacity left. I didn’t do a video on that run but do plan on videoing an offroad range test at the farm in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned.

You could definitely add solar to assist in charging but it wouldn’t be enought to run it.

Yep! Just look for a good battery with high output since you have two motors. I assumed the BBB’s are 48volts? You should have many options if you have the room, etc.

@TheHandyHunter yes, it is 48 volts and has alot of lights, radio, etc. But all the lights are led. If I contact big battery are their prices competitive,. Every where I look it looks like about 1000 to 1500 for the setup including charger.

That sounds cheap actually. I’ve only seen prices that low for lower Ah sets which may be all you need but generally the more Ah the more$$$.

@TheHandyHunter yes,. All lights and equipment are running off a current 8 battery setup to produce 48 volts. Then ran to a reducer and then to a fuse box
