How weird. I found Fun Cup about a month ago and am hooked. Then you announce a Fun Cup build. AWESOME !!!
Let's call it Buffy. Buffy the Plaid slayer.

Awesome name. Buffy it is. 👍👍👍
Don't come up the sides with batteries keep em on/in the floor. Super Tourers ran the pipes under the floor to lower the centre of gravity, it was that critical to handling ;-)
Loved the bingy reference :) I'd love to see it race against some funcup cars on a track.
Omg, she's gonna be quick, imagine just carrying only enough batteries for one pass at the quarter mile, it would be insane, power to weight ratio is everything. And massive wide slicks for traction out of the hole 🕳 🚥

problem is that the smaller the battery pack, the smaller the amps it gives. You cant get 1000Amps from a 20KWh battery. You need the KWh. So again its a balancing game.

Exactly what I was thinking, say 0.6 mile range. So you can drive it up to the timing lights, down the strip and back! I'm sure that will be a thing in future drag races.

A ev dune buggy would be awesome to see.
Wow can't wait to see it launch! Not too late to put all PT Cruiser shell on instead of the beetle 🤓

Fully Loaded Herbie. Im hoping he gets slicks or something beefy in the tyre department. Hyped and following.
Yes you are crazy - this will be crazy awesome.... cant wait to follow along with this project. Good luck !
Wow, I want one. Awesome airflow. Would be ideal in Australia.
Go for it mate. Looking forward to following this.
Love that! Especially under a Beetle shell! Next job has to be a TRABANT
Great idea to use a Fun Cup chassis. Quite a challenge too, especially the challenge of finding room for the batteries.
This is going to be EPIC!!!
This is going to be an epic build
Hell ya can't wait to see this build
Excellent! This conversion should be very interesting Thanks Richard. 🙂👍
(Assuming Tesla-style battery packs) I would imagine that, if you spin them vertical, you could get 2/3 batteries attached to the frame behind the seat, possibly both sides of that frame. I can see space for a battery in the flat area below the bonnet hood, possibly one above and one below again, just bolt through such that the one above lifts the one below. I can see space for more batteries attached to the roll-cage sides, again you could spin them vertical, possibly, if they won't foul the opening, or maybe one horizontal and one vertical towards the rear. Or, you could build a battery tray and suspend the batteries below the chassis, giving you plenty of room. You would have to jack the suspension up but, given that the weight is still really low down in the chassis, that should not mess with the handling. You could use the strength of the chassis and put the batteries on the floor tray, lifting the seat as you mentioned, but equally it might be possible to find a seat with good clearance underneath and advantageous mounting points, if you can then spread the batteries around between the seating mount point. You then just need room for your seat. Handbrake could be mounted from the dash board ?
I'd love to see some paddle-activated regen in an electric racecar. I love the thought of managing breaking in a corner with various strengths of regen, maybe a little tap on the break, then accelerate through the apex. Sounds fun! Plus, embrace the efficiency of electric!
@fbrs9915
2 жыл бұрын
This makes no sense. In a modern EV the strength of regen is determined by how hard you brake. Once you reach the drivetrain's capacity to regen then it'll add in regular brakes on top of that to slow you down. In normal driving the regular brakes are rarely activated unless you brake very hard.
@bkaye135
2 жыл бұрын
As I understand, the amount of regen is managed by the control unit. This can be set to driver preference (release of throttle = coast OR regen with braking effect). The scenario I'm envisioning is the driver has "coast" setting so that releasing the throttle doesn't engage any braking effect. Then, the driver activates an increased regen/braking through a paddle, only hitting brakes in corners that require it. This keeps brake heat down (saving it for a corner that needs cool brakes) and reduces wear, and maybe gets you a little extra distance from the battery along the way.

@@bkaye135 formula e uses Regen braking, but it think they also use regular brakes. It would be interesting if only regen braking was allowed. They'd have to break waaaaay earlier for most corners though

Interesting is going to be an understatement for this machine. 🚀🤔 😅
Speed record with Guy Martin coming up I think.
Is it crazy? Maybe a touch. Is it awesome? Definitely. Where should you take it? Anywhere they'll let you drive it hard! Goodwood seems obvious. Only problem I can see, is there probably aren't yet many plaid drivetrains in the wild for people to build it some buddies to race against.
I love the idea😍😍😍😍 Cant wait to see that project moving...💕
Build something that will leave Ken Blocks hoonicorn in its dust. Cant wait get on with it, please.
Plaid is MAD 🙏
Totally cool potentially scary and I would have never guessed it
Richard you legend , im so exited about this project i can hardly wait.
Looking forward to the build 👍
Epic, i bet it will do the Kessel run faster than the Millennium Falcon.
Awesome stuff Moggy, can't wait to see it finished 😁👍🏻 My build tip... big brakes 😋🤣
Oh man this is going to be awesome ! Can’t wait for you to get the journey started. Please bring it to Australia. And if you can try to get it as an exhibition car at Bathurst. Even though electric if this thing can fly around Mount Panorama and you can do donuts on the start finish line the crowd will go wild. Or even summer nats These are traditional petrol head events. But this will show what the future is and it ain’t all bad 👍 And this could be the fastest bettle on earth!

Here in Perth there is an electric Citron. Its been running around for years. He has other cars electric, but the Citron stands out
Breath taking performance is certainly available with EVs. A talk about biasing the spec and construction of EVs toward efficiency and range would be useful too. How to maximise mpg-e without making an EV unattractive? An electric Defender can be fast and good off road - obviously - but suppose we limited top speed to 85mph and the 0-60 time to 10secs, how far might it then go?
That’s going to epic! 👍👍👍🇬🇧
These new videos are epic, amazing content 👌
Its awesome to see these builds. What would be interesting would be a Can-Am Spyder or see if you could tackle a sea-do or jet boat.
Hi guys, this is Roger. It’s a pleasure to see your conversions. I share completely the point of view about the cars that you have, we need to make the change. If I can, I would like to say that I like conversions the same touch but with a multimedia project too. Sorry if it bothers. I know that could be wrong in some cars but it could be invisible too). I’m an employee with kids and I can’t afford the money but it would be awesome to see a conversion of a spyder 550 and a Yamaha YXZ 1000 into electric powered vehicles. I’m waiting to see the next video you post! Thanks for the content.
LOVE IT!! Especially wrapped in a beetle body. Would be good if you could put the front in regen and power through a corner using the rear motor. Or vice-versa can’t wait to see all the control systems you will run and dash setup. Also maybe cantilevered inboard shocks. Get that unsprung weight down. You will need to build all carbon fibre interior fit out. Even Cf floor with built in aerodynamics to create downdraft under her.🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🇦🇺
BIG BRAKES, PARACHUTES, WINGS etc etc lol 😜👍🤜🤛🇬🇧🏴
looking to forward to see this coming out of the garage, awesome challenge
I am looking forward to this!
Going to need to throw the trade plates and a set of wets on that. Book it for an mot a good few miles away and I think you would be perfectly justified taking it to and from the test center😜
...Moggy do the ultimate race...Pikes Peak
Could the crash structure not be extended a small amount to allow more batteries to the front and rear?
Call it BiNkEv 2.0.I have just started watching your channel and ive seen Binky from the beginning.cheers from australia...
Awesome Project!
Looking forward to following this series 👍 thanks for posting these videos on here
This is going to be an awesome series watching how you develop this beast! I'd love to see a custom EV builder race series. ECC matching up against the likes of EV West and Bloodshed Motors from the USA. Laguna Seca would be a brilliant track to hold the competition if you're going overseas.
That's great looking forward to watching 👍
Coventry Motor Fest, Fully Charged Live, Goodwood, dunno if there is an event at Zandvoort that matches the crazy of this build.
It had to be a beetle 😁, this project looks very exciting. Just another reason to keep us glued to the channel 🤟⚡🏁
You are Great Richard😁👍👍
So, you have a roll cage with wheels, lol.
Sounds totally Welsh that....... Plaid !!!
How about a layer of batteries under the seat? Keep the weight low down almost looks like there is a tray effect ready for the batteries?
Absolutely love this. But seriously if I was you I would keep it an open frame don’t put a fibreglass body on it I love how just the frame looks😍😍
You know what would be cool? That 300 horses, 400 kmh, MG "mistletoe". I'd like to see that electrified! 😁
I think what you are doing is superb for the EV market. Also you are enabling the the continuation of use of classic cars as useable vehicles, just brilliant! My favourite for conversion would be a Lancia Fulvia a car of beautiful lines and practical dimensions. Good luck with the project and look forward to future posts.

Nice project ,cant wait to see result .Regards
interesting project, excited to see how it turns out. Please give it a name and include it in video titles to make it easier to follow on the progress.
Talking of Project Binky. How about a Challenge between the Tesla powered Mini and Binky?😉
Great project - from a standard racing point of view I would love to see some cantilever suspension work on the build and since it is a light weight project, some carbon ceramic or at least floating discs. And some carbon wheels. From a EV perspective it would be great to see some advanced torque vectoring and an advanced launch control with optimal power ramp up

What about some serious custom inboard front brakes, so he can run some very cool aero wheels and then use no rear brakes at all like the latest gen3 formula e cars are going to do? 🤔
Excellent project, it will be dynamic. I recommend going with a swappable battery pack configuration so that the pack weight can be adjusted to suit the track. A super/ultracapacitor battery pack will be super expensive but the weight will be very light compared to more conventional batteries. For the absolute maximum performance battery pack weight is paramount. Major limitation with capacitor batteries is range, so alternative packs become a necessity.
do like Lotus and build a wall of batteries behind the driver seat.
Wow that is going to be a speedster. I would like to pick your brain about my Pinzgauer. Motor battery packs the whole shebang. I would actually like to see you build one. If i had a gob of cash I would throw it your way
Looking forward to this build, being in depth!! 😀
That’s going to be brilliant, but I would like to start with a SHP escort chassis . You should take it to Cletus McFarlands Freedom Factory in florida for the spectator races.
All about having fun
Mmmm 1000hp beetle, I assume downforce will be massive. It's going to be an interesting project to watch. Must say I thought it may have been a Ford Popular initially
What a project!! This is going to be totally insane and I can't wait to see your progress! It would be cool if you could finish it in time for Coventry MotoFest. It's a great event and so many people and companies come from all over the place to attend. They close part of the ring road and set up a time attack type circuit which is great to watch and this thing would smash it!! This year it's on the 10th and 11th of September 👍🏼 hope to see you there 😁
It's going to be more of a Drag Racer/ Come Hill Climber. But WOW, wouldn't it be a good challenge #pikespeakhillclimb. Although don't think you'll get it ready for June. LOL
Possible event is a race against the Hoonicorn the Plaid lost to it can this bug do 1 better?
Next year you could challenge the fellow on the Tesla Plaid channel on a 1/4 mike strip in the US
Is there a class for this to race in or can it be raced in an open class its a lovely project.
Massive yet Tiny project, for sure if no restrictions you guys will build a little monster ''Joltik'' suggested name. I just wait for this to be done and driven. All the best and congratulations for the Q&A section, awesome idea.
Hey, new fan here from carwow. Love your projects, super exciting! Definitely subscribing
Please can we see more of Tim the cameraman. He is very cool
Maybe consider being able to swap battery packs out depending on needs and type of racing. Drag vs hill climbing vs long track racing Why don’t you do the famous pikes peak !
Awesome plan, looking forward to watching this build. When I saw it with the cover on, I thought you'd got yourself a G-WIZ, but then with their crash resistance that would not be good to make super fast!
The devs at Porsche designed methods to curtail EV Performance Fade from heat soak. That’s a hell of a challenge to pack that much plaid in such a small package. What are your plans to minimize EVPF from heat soak? As for battery placement, obviously a pair of L pack under the driver, and coming up the side of the seating position, separated by the drive shaft. The second immediately behind & in front of the driver, but I think you will have to make a way to surround the motors and gearbox/drivetrain, to make them fit. Then what about the controller and cooling, the equipment AND the driver? Bitchin build! Can’t wait to see it happen, May the Schwartz be with you. (Hint: plaid, Spaceballs)
Is it crazy? Yup! Do I love it? Oh yes! Is that a “standard” chassis for the series or has it been custom built for the motors or will you have to cut and weld it to accommodate the electric setup? Can’t wait!
Seems like an opportunity to partner with Fun Cup & design the ev future for the series. Guess you could also move the seat to one side (RHD obv) and fit batteries to the left side. Not sure I’d want batteries on both sides if you had a fire & needed to climb over them to get out. I guess you’d have to be very unlucky to have both sides on fire!
You can put batteries beside the seat
Unless you design a chassis from scratch you need to start with something. So why not. Let me put the cat amongst the proverbial, what about a famous car that never was. There are several companies making everything you need (out of metal) to put a Jaguar AJ13 on the road. I still think this was the best looking car Jaguar designed. Imagine an electric one with a bit of aero at the front underneath so you can't see it to fix the nose light problem at speeds over 170 MPH
Id like to see a Twizy conversion we can order.
Absolutely awesome!! 😁👍 Is modifying the chassis an option? Redo the tube floor under the seat, and use the battery box as a stressed member? Help handling with LCG. Guessing 'Binky' is now a unit of project time scale, like 'Ugga Dugga's' are to bolt torques...🙄🤣
@ElectricClassicCars

Absolutely, it's a universally recognised unit of time now. I'm 6 Binkys old now. 😆👍
I’ve restored several gas vehicles and planning my first EV and I really enjoy your channel. Keep ‘‘em coming,
This is awesome! Can’t wait to watch this build. Q. What is Done for the comforts of the inside of the converted type car? Eg. Aircon, digital dash displays, gauges etc
Awesome!
Ok great idea! What about 4 in wheel motors?
Son of a Gun .amazing..
Great project and tubular frame a nice strong base. Going to be interesting watching you figure out the battery location and installing the engines. Search for the lightest wheels you can find that can handle the power. Brake balance adjuster could be useful. Are body panels fibre glass or something more exotic like carbon fibre?
Q Have you looked at in-wheel motors? How would that affect your work and skill set? What do you see as the future for those?
I think you will end with up a larger vehicle, using more batteries than required, because you also need a lot of weight for traction.
This is fantastic project and is going to be awesome 👍
Looks exciting... Now a nice electric PINK colour scheme and your away..!
If that's RWD, the body length is going to impact on keeping front wheels down during a drag race. Also if RWD, F1 style sticky tyres may be needed to get enough traction. If you position the batteries too far forward to counter lifting front wheels, it may also end up being front heavy on low acceleration and cornering. If you want good air conditioning, just forgo the body panels.
Excellent 👌
Wow its gunna be insane. Can't wait to see this beast on the track eating up the fossil fuel vehicles. Keep the video's flowing guys 👌🎥🎥👌
