Tesla Model Y vs. Chevy Bolt EUV Comparison | Which Small Electric SUV Is Best?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Tesla Model Y is a standout in the electric small SUV class. Sure, the Model Y is impressive, with thrilling speed and handling, but its base price is now just shy of $70K. Enter the all-new Chevy Bolt EUV, which is billed as a utility vehicle (EUV stands for "Electric Utility Vehicle") but is more of a hatchback and doesn’t offer all-wheel drive. Still, these vehicles have more in common than you might think. While the Y’s price grows steeper, Chevy cut the price of the Bolt EUV, making it a super affordable EV that provides excellent space and comfort for the money. In this face-off, it’s popularity and prestige versus affordability in an appealing package. Which one comes out on top in this matchup? Join Edmunds’ Ryan ZumMallen in the video above to find out!

    Is the Tesla Model Y worth nearly twice as much as a Bolt EUV? Looks like EV customers will be asking themselves that question in 2023.

  • @gregkramer5588

    @gregkramer5588

    No, the Y is worth at most $60k with Autopilot not $74k. No more than a GV60 for sure. An EV6 wind at $53k is better than the Y in most ways. The Y gets more range but worse ride, interface, quietness and build quality. The Bolt is impossible to beat for the price at this time.

    Edmunds - the Chevy BOLT is CRAP. even MUNRO thinks so. the Chevy BOLT is not even built by gm, its 80% made by LG. LG who makes CRAP pouch cell Batteries for the BOLT. gm did little to ZERO enginering of the BOLT. gm only built the BODY shell. not the Cells, modules , battery pack, the BMS , the Thermal system or HVAC. the RWD model 3 is a SUPERIOR car.

    FACTS are the Chevy BOLT is too SLOW, too short RANGE and very INEFFICIENT. the BOLT is built too HEAVY. and the TESLA model 3 RWD is the MOST Efficient car in the USA @ 132 mpg. the BOLT is also LACKING a FRUNK which people need and makes car SAFER. having a FRUNK is a ADVANCED Design exercise . the Chevy BOLT is NOT an Advanced car. its based upon a GAS platform.

    Purchased a Bolt EUV Launch Edition in September. Phenomenal value! I have put about 5400 miles on it since purchasing and the majority of those miles were with Super Cruise activated. It is so good that I am actually thinking of buying a second one.

    After only 5,400 miles you couldn't possibly tell if it's a good value. How will it hold up after 50,000 miles? 100,000 miles? Based on the price it is not a good chance. The Bolt EUV starts at $27,000 and $18,000 is just the battery pack. That means every other part, assembly and profit comes in at $9,000. Chevy has to be cutting corners in quality in a major way to come in at $9,000 for everything else other than the battery pack.

    @@jimv1983 Part of whether or not something is a good value is simply its features. While I personally like the Tesla better, there's no doubt that the Bolt EUV compares well to the Tesla, even beating it in some areas. Chevy has kept the price down by not having struts for the hood and not having a power lift gate. But they also have a review camera in the review mirror and super cruise. The only real area drivers are concerned about when it comes to cutting corners is the battery, and Chevy has your standard warranty on it, so who cares if they're cutting corners, as long as they honor their warranty?

    @@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 I care a lot more about the quality and long term reliability than having fancy features. The car only sells for $25,000 and like 65% is the battery. That leaves less than $10,000 for all other parts, assembly and profit for both Chevy and the dealership. They can't build a car that is good quality that will be reliable for a long time for that little money. Look at the cheapest gas cars on the road. Cars like the Kia Rio, Chevy Spark and Mitsubishi Mirage. They range from $14,000-17,000 and they are absolute garbage. For the Bolt to be $25,000 it would have to have a significantly lower production price than even those cheapest gas cars for everything else other than the cost of the battery.

    Have had my Bolt for 3 years. Chevy really came through with this one - no annoying issues. They replaced the battery (supplier's fault) so now I'm consistently getting more than 420 KM on a single charge. Charge once per month overnight at my condo. Much more convenient than a gas-fueled car. Also leave muscle cars in the dust when I pull away at intersections which is surprisingly fun.

    I owned both of them and I can say I truly prefer the bolt over the Tesla Model Y. First ride quality! He even mentioned that in the video. That’s the main reason why I got rid of my Tesla. The ride quality felt horrible! I felt every single bump on the road, which also causes rattling inside the cabin. So annoying!!! Second build quality. Brand new car shouldn’t have any gaps or issues. Right after I drove it off the lot, somehow the driver’s window wasn’t sealed properly which causes an annoying wind noise coming through. However Tesla technology is out of this world and that’s what makes this car so special. Over the air updates and Tesla app works flawlessly with the car. Plus the charging network is a huge plus if you are someone that likes road trips a lot! Bolt will definitely disappoint you with its low fast charging ability. Bolt works for us as a commuter car without braking the bank.

    The Bolt is absolutely a great option. I'd just highlight a few things: * With the Tesla, there's no "MSRP" issues. You know how much it's going to cost and that's that. Good luck actually getting the Bolt at MSRP * The Bolt will be more than fine as long as you have consistent access to a level 2 charger. If you live in an apartment, however, and don't have consistent access to a level 2 charger, you'll be forced to use public charging and you have to plan things out more, due to its slow charging. * Tesla's FSD price is nuts. I'd love to see a video of just how capable super cruise is. * The speed of acceleration of the Model Y is awesome, but the Bolt seems more than capable. I'm probably going to get a Model 3 performance, but the Bolt is a great option, especially if you have level 2 access.

    Good comparison. The Tesla is better if you can’t charge at home or if you plan on doing a lot road trips, although something like the Prius Prime or used Chevy Volt might be a better choice for long distances. Tesla performance is also better if that’s your thing. I cared a lot more about it when I was younger. The Bolt is a better choice if you want a normal driving experience. My wife is a technophobe so I don’t see her digging through menus to change settings in the Tesla.

    Thanks for the review. I bought BOLT EUV and happy with I got for the price. 26K after rebate for an EV is a steal in today's auto market. I doubt those prices will last. GM is probably taking a loss at that price. Regular owners don't ever drive their cars with full acceleration. Those 0-60 numbers are just for spec sheet. I own Acura MDX SH-AWD which goes 0-60 in 6.5 seconds but I never did that in my 8 years of owning it. I think GM cars will be a hit in the market. And people will buy Tesla only for it's impressive spec sheet and supercharging network. Also Tesla is considered to be a luxury car but there is nothing luxirious about it except for the price.

    I have rented both cars to do a self evaluation. All of the positives you gave for both cars is spot on. I found the Bolt easier to drive and assimilate to. The ride was comfortable and plush as you stated. The big draw back on the Bolt is the charging speeds and range. For around town or round trips of 120-130 miles it is fine. But a long trip to my daughters house (no fast charging stations near her home yet) will mean long wait times for charging - like 7 hours on a 240v 50amp NEMA plug. I do have a 50amp NEMA plug for my home charging and found it was okay for both cars over night. I'm leaning to the Bolt because of price. Will use my ICE car for trips to my daughter's house.

Your video is really good but I can't believe you did not stick your hand out the sun roof wave and say you can't get this on any Tesla? We lease all our EV’S through our C-Corp which means we don't have to track any mileage or where you go. You just report the full amount of lease price per and write it off on your tax for the year. That saves a lot of tracking time on tax accounting! Tesla will soon open their charge stations to all EV’S so get ready to enjoy that one too! 😉

    Interestingly enough Tesla Model Y and Chevy Bolt EUV both have a luxury option not so common in other EVs like heated rear seats important in cold climates. Speaking about cold climates Tesla has several advantages: heated pump, AWD, availability of reliable chargers, and recently its ability to use CCS to Tesla adapter to be charged even at non Tesla fast chargers which oddly enough are faster than Tesla dedicated chargers. Nevertheless Bolt EUV DOES NOT charge slower than Tesla at Level 2 AC 240 V chargers due to a very fast built in AC charger in refreshed Bolt EV and EUV.

    I own a 2020 Bolt and a 2022 Model X (not a Y), I love the bolt as a commuter but nothing matches tesla for charging network. The 55kW max charge rate of the Bolt is embarrassing. Even if they doubled their charge rate to a 100kW max, it would still be slower than almost every other EV on the road today. I do 95% of my charging at home on level 1 or 2 charging, but those very rare road trips in the Bolt are frustrating compared to my Tesla. The things that surprises me the most when comparing my Bolt and Model X is that the Bolt despite being $90,000 less off the factory line (I bought it used for under $60k) feels like a "better" car. The build is solid, the ride is comfortable and everything feels natural. The compare of the Driver Assist features was not fully stated. For the Bolt you need to spend $2200 for the super cruise option but it doesn’t do anything without also paid a monthly OnStar subscription. I’m not sure how much this costs, but you should and it should have been mentioned. For the Tesla it comes with basic autosteer for no additional cost. This does what the Bolt does for $2200 + monthly OnStar subscription. The difference here is the Tesla works everywhere while the Bolt only works on a subset of “well mapped roads.” Also different is the Bolt is hands free on that subset of roads where it works while the Tesla requires one to keep at least one hand on the wheel for everywhere. For additional money one can add Enhanced Autopilot to the Tesla. This adds features beyond GMs Supercruise. It can be a one time fee or just a subscription like OnStar. You don’t have to both buy it and subscribe like with Chevy. For even more up front cost or a higher (not both) fee one can get even more driver assist features of the FSD package.

    where did you get this data...Super cruise is basics "autosteer" and a "monthly OnStar" Subscription...? FSD and Super Cruise do the same thing with super cruise restricted to well mapped roads. An engineering choice by GM. People can argue if this path is better than Tesla's but its a path.

    @@KOFIV77 get to know the facts before you respond. all Teslas come with basic autopilot which is basically a more versatile implementation of super cruise. I find it hard to believe that a multi-billion dollar company like GM can't figure out how to get auto-steer working w/o premapping all the roads, when outfits like open pilot/comma ai can achieve the same thing in a Chevy Bolt with an aftermarket device that also handles auto lane changes and now traffic-light/stop sign detection......and yet the public keeps praising super cruise as some super state-of-the-art self driving system....what a farce

  • @HarveyPayne

    @HarveyPayne

    @@KOFIV77 autosteer and traffic aware cruise control both come free with every new Tesla. Autosteer does what it says - automatically steers the car. It just stays in the current lane, be that a freeway or a city street. Any place with lane markings. Enhanced autopilot adds automatic lane changes, smart summon, auto park, and most importantly Navigate on Autopilot (NoA). NoA will drive the car and follow a route along a freeway system. It will change lanes to go around slow vehicles or to move to a needed exit lane. It will automatically change to another freeway or exit the freeway, depending on your route. For road trips this means it does most of the driving except when it’s time to leave the freeway to recharge. Add in FSD and it handles all this plus the city streets. I can route to Costco and switch FSD on as I leave my driveway and the car will choose the route, drive that route and say it arrived when it pulls into the Costco parking lot. I monitor it and take cover when it messes up. No mess ups means it did the complete drive itself. If I only had NoA or just the free basic autopilot, I could use autosteer after I left my neighborhood because we don’t have lines on our neighborhood streets. As soon as I got to a lined street I could use autosteer until I needed to turn. I would manually make the turn then reenable autosteer until my next turn. NoA will stop at stop signs and stop lights but it also stops at green lights unless you manually tell it to continue through. This stop sign/light feature is part of NoA. Basic (free) autopilot would just run the lights and signs.

  • @HarveyPayne

    @@KOFIV77 I’m familiar with the tech. Supercruise will maintain your lane and speed. A higher level will auto lane change but I don’t think (not sure) that level is available on Bolts. This might be limited to more luxury cars like the Cadillac. It will only do this on premapped roads. This means most freeways I think. You have to pay $2200 on the Bolt to get the option and if you go to the Chevy site and configure a bolt with the Supercruise option you will see in the fine print “A current OnStar subscription required.” Supercruise is way way way a subset of FSD which operates on all roads, will stop for stop lights and stop signs, automatically make necessary turns or drive through traffic circles, etc. FSD is way more expensive though. $15k purchase or $200 monthly. However, if you do buy NoA for $6k I believe the subscription for FSD becomes $99/month.

    We own both a 2021 Model Y LR AWD and a 2022 Bolt EUV Premier. Love them both. For sure the Bolt is a better value, but be aware that the Bolt can be a problem on long road trips, especially in winter (Bolt range drops hard in cold weather - more than the MY). For daily driving, both are good and the Bolt as a softer ride. Tesla has greater power yet uses less electricity per mile. Tesla is also larger. The single screen Tesla takes longer to get use to whereas the Bolt is more like a regular gas car in terms of driver interface (wipers, sound control, hvac, etc). Both charge fast enough overnight on 240 VAC L2, but on the road at a DC fast charger, the Bolt really sucks compared to the Tesla as it is MUCH slower to charge and in many areas the CCS network often has single charge stations compared to the much larger, much more reliable Tesla Supercharger network. If a Bolt were low on power, say 15% state of charge, then rolls into a single charge location, and there is a car in front of it, it could take HOURS to get back on the road, unless there is another station nearby. Electrify America is the best CCS network in terms of having multiple stations. Where I live there is mostly Chargepoint single chargers. Every CCS network requires one to have an account and usually an app on their phone. CCS stations have way more outage time compared to Tesla SC.Where I live, Tesla SC is only along the interstates but you can find CCS chargers in weird small towns. I rarely go on long trips, but if I did I would not consider the Bolt. Model Y is excellent snow car. Bolt has horrible factory tires for snow and it is prudent to buy a set of snow tires if you live in areas with snow. If money is no option, buy the Tesla, but if money matters, the Bolt EUV is a good choice if you can live with its limitations.

    Um, Chevy will NOT "pay for you to get a home charger". They will give you $1000 TOWARDS a Level 2 charger installation, which barely covers the cost of some EVSEs, nevermind the cost of the installation itself, which can vary a LOT depending on the age and capacity of your electrical panel. You need a main panel with at least 200 Amp service, and enough empty slots to accommodate a 45 to 50 Amp sub-panel. If you had to upgrade a 100A panel to a 200A, it could cost you THOUSANDS. My installation cost me $2000, for 2 panel masts, 25ft of "flying" power cable, 50A sub-panel, and installation of the EVSE I'd purchased, plus a 110v outlet.(Alternatively, they will give you a $500 Debit card for the EVgo DC Fast Charging network) In a lot of cases, most folks could get by quite easily on the 110V Level 1 charger that comes with the car. I found the EV to be a lot less comfortable to drive than the EUV. My 2c.

    Just for design and passenger space, I went for Bolt EUV in Dec 2023, and love it.

    The Chevy bolt is very nice but unfortunately it doesn’t do fast charging.

    Bolt can not replace a tesla but it’s a good second car or a budget gas car replacement.

    biased review again Edmunds. I don't see how they fail to mention that super cruise only works on pre-mapped freeways and can not be engage at any time you want to. Also they failed to mention that Tesla offers a much versatile equivalent for super cruise at no extra charge. the 6k enhanced autopilot will allow the car to auto lane change, which the version of super cruise on bolt will never be able to do. not a very equal evaluation

    Tesla Y is now 45,000 after price cuts and tax credits…😂

    It isn't, cause the cheapest one is 54,000 then add in destination fee (1350) and reservation fee (250) and your at 55,500. So best case scenario is 48k before taxes. A bolt euv is 28.5k best case scenario for a premiere trim (highest trim) that is 35k. So it's 20k less? Still a bargain and beats the pants off the Tesla at this price. You can almost buy 2 of them for the price.

    I know next to nothing about both cars, but this seemed extremely biased and subjective. How much did GM pay for this commercial?

    The model Y is so much better than the bolt EUV that this comparisons is invalid. I don’t think these will get comparison shopped. If I couldn’t afford a model Y I would definitely buy the Bolt.

    The best feature of the Bolt is that it doesn't come with an Elon and fanboys.
