Tesla Model Y review: New electric SUV test in Australia - is it worth stepping up from Model 3? 4K

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

New cars don't come much more important or more anticipated than the 2022 Tesla Model Y.
This all-electric SUV is already the best-selling EV crossover on the planet, and it's finally arrived in Australia where it will compete with a number of key rivals like the Audi e-tron, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Volvo XC40 Recharge, BMW iX and Mercedes EQA and EQC.
In this review, Tom White got behind the wheel of the base model RWD Model Y, which is just over $70,000 (AUD) and our intention is to get into the flagship Model Y Performance soon (more than AUD $100,000).
This five-seater SUV (there's a seven seater version in other markets, but not in Australia just yet) offers more practicality than most other midsize SUVs out there, and with the choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), it betters some of its direct EV SUV rivals, too.
With driving range claimed at either 455km for the RWD or 514km for the Model Y Performance AWD, and with impressive claims on the efficiency front - plus with fast charging and more recharging options than any other brand on the market, there's a lot to like about the Model Y.
But is there more to the story? You bet. Watch the video, and read the detailed review, at the link below.

Your claimed 6.3 sec 0-100km speed for the base model is way off. It is claimed by Tesla to run 6.9 but has been independently tested at 7.10.

Not face-tearingly quick, but more than quick enough. 7 sec to 100 is quite a bit quicker than the average Australian car (closer to 9). The instant torque and lack of gearbox kick-down makes it quicker in the real world than the number suggests.

7 seconds is still plenty quick. Bear in mind Polestar 2 (single motor) does 0-100 in 7.3 - 7.5 and it felt quick enough when we test drove it.

The fact that you can/should charge to 100% every day in this base model Y, due to it's LFP batteries is very important, since you get the full range every day. In the LR and Performance versions the use NMC batteries and they should only be charged to 80% daily and only occasionally to 100%. This means that as a daily commuter you have more range available compared to LR and Performance. This is not mentioned in this test.

I have tested model 3 and I found that looking to the side to see the speed is no difference from being in front. You won't think this at 1st but I challenge anyone to consciousnessly look at you speed in any car then drive a Tesla and do the same. Also I'm blind in my right eye which should make it worse, however, looking down at your speed is no different to looking to the side. In fact I find it easier. Either way you still need to look at the speed no matter what and it's no difference where you look and you will find its more a memory thing and you will be used to it in less than a week

Not sure if this ever gets mentioned, but these screens are designed for use in LHD markets, where the screen is usually being operated by the dominant right hand. In RHD markets these screens always feel more difficult to be accurate because most people are using their non-dominant hand.

I've owned the dual motor LR Model Y for a couple of years, great car. It's extremely fast (they don't sell the single motor version in the USA), handles well, incredibly efficient, and very practical. The suspension is by far the weakest aspect of the car, they need an air suspension option or just a better suspension.

You mentioned having to navigate the screen, but I use the voice commands on my Model 3 car which I find great and just love not having heaps of buttons in a car I never really figure out what they do! I find using the screen just like using my iPad and once I've set everything up, don't have to bother much with it again. You said the screen is easy to reach and do things with - well just a note, if you're a short female, it is harder, however I put a swivel on my screen and can face it towards me a little more. I frequently (and easily) use the cruise control to keep my speed which is really great. I love it so much, we also bought the Model Y!

Nice review. I'm always amused by reviews that criticise the placement of the instrument display in the centre of the car as though this is something unique to the model 3 or Y. There are plenty of other cars about with central instrument displays ranging from baby Toyotas to Citroen Picassos. You certainly adapt very quickly and you rarely regret gaining the extra visibility ahead of the steering wheel that relocating that aspect of the dashboard sideways gives.

Model Y base gets premium sound and HEPA which Tesla used to charge around $5k for premium sound and $750 for HEPA so the base model Y is a good deal compared to the 3 but I guess the 3 is faster and slightly more range. Premium sound, HEPA and hatchback are the biggest factors for buying the Y over the 3. Full self driving is cheap in Aus at $10k. Its going up to $21,600 AUD in the US next week and will continue up in future (I bought for $3k a few years ago)

Everyone I know who’s taken one for a drive enjoyed the suspension, a 1.9 tonne car you don’t want to be boating around corners. Most people coming from BMW etc felt the model Y suspension was similar to their previous car. Not sure why every commercial review echos suspension concerns when 9/9 consumers I’m aware of liked it’s planted sporty feel. After taking it for a test drive I wouldn’t want it any other way.

@@damianjames8148 nice. Did you like it? I have gone from a model 3 to a Y and we couldn’t be happier. (Miss the 0-100 performace a little but hey. Family car that’s not exactly slow). There is NO way I would want the suspension to be soft and sappy. I can poke a family sized SUV hard into roundabouts and its suspension is confidence inspiring. No one has described it as harsh? It’s notably refined in just about every aspect compared to my original California built 3. I recently test drove a brand new Mazda equivalent sized car (fully optioned) and purely based on safety/features/connectivity and performance was lacking. I estimate within approx 50,000km would be the same price with regard to running cost. Not to mention the Mazda would have stopped approx 60 times for fuel and been handed over for 4-5 days worth of servicing.

@Jack. Yes I loved driving the Y and will probably get one in the next 6 months. If the suspension was softer then the reviewers would complain about the sway and movement during cornering. It’s a family SUV not a sports car. However, it really does drive well for the 20 minutes during my test drive. Not as fast as the M2 but still plenty of fun to drive

@@damianjames8148 I’m confident you will enjoy the swap if your commit. The fact that 99% of reviews only talk about ride kinda says there’s not much to pick on. It’s highly connected, feature rich, quick enough even for the RWD and safest in class. There are a couple of minor quirks every now and then, but considering the features it has that no other car has and the constant and worth while OTA updates. We couldn’t be happier with ours. 5 Tesla’s in the family and none of us have lost a car for a days servicing. Unreal compared to ICE warranty and maintenance requirements!

Pretty well done, I'd have to say. I think the model 3 has a pretty stiff suspension too. I love how it moves through a circular freeway onramp at thrice the suggested speed with ease, but I really would rather have a bit cushier, more nuanced ride. One test I always employ is if my head bounces on the head rest while going over bumps, and my model 3 fails this test. This is nit=picky though, this is, by far, the best car I've ever owned. I'm hoping that some suspension improvement hardware that I can put in it will become available. I believe it's already out, but I think it voids the warranty to install it at this point.

False info about the white interior, I have the white and have kids and also have friends with the black seats, the white is much more hard wearing then the black, also the wood trim is actually plastic, where’s the white trim is metal, also the FSD is an appreciating asset, it will be solved and legal in Australia within 3 years, as for useing screen on the move I agree but you didn’t mention it has one of the best voice Systems on the market so that’s irrelevant, also seen many German reviews driving Y on the auto barn and it handles better then 3 at high speeds as it’s a two piece giga cast, for a better review check out car expert Paul reviews way better. Speed on screen is something you Get used to very Quick. And your almost right about it being Australia’s best selling EV, it will be the worlds best selling car over the next 3 years over taking the Toyota Corolla. Get that round your mince pies.
