Tesla Model X Air Suspension Tire Wear

Ғылым және технология

Welcome back! On today's episode of Now You Know, we test out our Tesla Model X's air suspension in very high and very low mode to see if it affects the wear and tear on our tires. Watch to see what we find out!

    The camber isn't what's causing the wear. It's the change in toe that's causing the inside edge wear more than that little bit of negative camber. Anytime you change camber, your toe angle changes. Negative camber tends to only cause lots of wear in extreme cases. You can have your alignment set while it's in the very low position if you always drive at that setting. Anytime you're driving the car at a position other than what you aligned it at then you're causing excessive tire wear. Source: Model S owner with air suspension & previous job was an alignment tech.

    +Dan Low Thanks for your explanation. Can you explain the difference between toe angle and camber angle?

    Toe is how parallel the tires are when looking at them from above, Camber is how parallel they are when looking at them from behind.

    I agree with +Dan Low on this. It's the toe angle as the result of a poor setup right from the factory. I agree with +W3072, that Tesla owes you a set of tires. If the tires haven't been replaced already, I would lean towards a winter tire.

    The biggest problem is that this same problem occurs even in low, and the suspension defaults to move to low mode while driving. You’ll need to manually shut off auto lowering while driving to prevent the wear. Tesla service center will not adjust suspension alignment to a low mode to prevent this wear in low.

    Great stuff. I had heard of this but never seen a visual with the X and its tires. Curious if the Low setting at high speeds causes any premature damage as well or it is just restricted to very low before camber is altered?

    Like Tesla We love your channel BTW. Yes even "Low" changes the camber slightly so there is going to be pre-mature wear but just not as fast/much as "Very Low".

    This local shop recommended to get no asmetrical tires for me so that the tires can be rotated inside of tires become outside only if u buy nonasmetrical tires I used Toyo proxes 3 So far so gud at about 20000 km I hav to get them rotated and should be able to get double the miles from reg continental that comes with Tesla’s now days

    You'd probably need to move the car a few feet to see the change in camber after you adjust the ride height. The contact portion of the tire has to move in or out relative to the end of the axle in order for the camber to change. I remember noticing this many years ago when I had a car with a rear "swing axle." If I jacked it up, say to change tires, the car would come down on the tires in one position (the swing axle would pull the wheel inwards when the weight was off it), and the tire would move outward to its normal position as I drove it away. Just a short distance was required.

    Good find guys. So I guess low and vary low should only be used if there's a height restriction when in your garage. What happens to the front wheels?

  • @cwgaytan8140

    @cwgaytan8140

    Nothing. The front tires are less wide than the back tires. If you went to a square set up you would solve the problem also. Just run the winter size 19 all around with front tire specs--- problem fixed. And you will be able to rotate the wheels and retain manufacturers warranty. I have owned my Model X for 3 years with no excessive wear on any of the tires, but I did switch to a square setup. The year I ran the originals I had it go to low on the highway only after 70 mph (our highways go up to 85mph on I-10) and it never had any uneven wear. I switched so I could rotate and extend the life of the tires, avoid curb rash, and be able to lower the total weight per wheel. Not sure this was why the inside of his wheel was worn--looks like a rear wheel alignment problem, but I guess it might have been.

  • @gilyee

    So let me understand this... the suspension does not affect the camber right? The wear you experienced was just due to poor alignment... correct?

    How is the tire wear in the model 3 ?

  • @shotpin
    @shotpin7 жыл бұрын

    We have a 2014 Model S P85+ and we go through tires like they're going out of style. The tires are wider in the back, so they cannot be rotated. If we get 10,000 miles we are doing well. Currently the Tesla has over 112,000 miles (do the math). We have ordered a 2017 Model X P100d with ludicrous ridding on 22's. The tires can be rotated! This will be our road car and the Model S will be the town car.

    +shotpin So why do you think you are going through tires so quickly on your MS? Speed? Tire quality? Roads in your area? Interesting to hear that you will be able to rotate your MX tires, unfortunately we can't on Sparky but I'll check with our Service Center to see if this has changed. Thanks!

    we drive in a well "spirited manner ", roads are varied, and we do long road trips, so we replace the tires as recommended by Tesla.

    But why does the camber change? isn't the wheel supposed to stay at the same angle when the lower and upper arms of the suspension have the same dimensions/length? Maybe someone can explain this to me.

    Are you guys trained mechanics ??? Doesnt sound like it. If you want to give advice to the public you should really be properly trained. Inner edge tire wear can also be caused by excesive toe out which in an IRS car can be caused by suspension squat depending on the design of the swinging arms. IRS wheels that are driven will be set up to have static toe out so that under acceleration the suspension flex will straighten the wheels out to zero toe out to minimise wear. So now you know !

  • @NowYouKnowChannel

    @NowYouKnowChannel

    7 жыл бұрын

    We're totally not trained mechanics, that is true. However, after we noticed our tires were scrubbed and realized that we did an 8,000 mile road trip in "very low" we scratched our heads and brought it into the service center. They said that driving in very low for extended periods of time might not be good for the tires. We'll certainly be talking to them about toe out in the future, especially if we continue to experience uneven tire wear. Thank you for your advice!

    +RIPPERTON you really can't jack up a Tesla. It weighs almost 6000lbs. I mean we have a 2 ton jack but... (that's why Tesla has the Ranger service) We'll definitely be looking more into it.

    We have jacked up our Model X 100D several times with a 2-ton floor jack. Easier than a pickup truck or one of our large vans. Even has a jacking placement nicely marked.
