    Sue and Carl did a great job. A very insightful discussion of the HVAC system of the Model S Plaid. As an old HVAC tech, I couldn't agree more about the importance of improved indoor air quality. Explanations of the material science, sound attenuation and air distribution were outstanding. You're OK too Sandy, for an old guy.

    Carl and Sue are exceptional, especially the way they work together. On a separate issue of winding the rotor with carbon fibre, it was my understanding that the filaments were wound under tension. Sandy, can you explain how similar levels of tension could be achieved with a pre woven sleeve? Thanks to all of you.

  • @glennedwards1449

    @glennedwards1449

    2 жыл бұрын

    My very uneducated guess is that it is not a pre woven sleeve. They have throw out the machine that winds the carbon fibre onto the motor in favour of one that actually weaves it directly onto the motor. Another guess is that the weave is strong enough that it is not required.

  • @ZipZoomZip

    @ZipZoomZip

    I think the photo Sandy has is probably an early prototype that didn't work out. Thus it was necessary to build the winder. You can see some radial witness marks where the rotor sleeve diameter was probably measured while spinning at high speed to determine the amount of growth.

    Important (unfortunately) practical consideration for cabin filtration that was not mentioned, wildfires and smoke. Where we have seen wildfires in Colorado and California in particular, being able to safely drive out of the area in your vehicle with protection from the smoke in the air is of great benefit.

  • @GilmerJohn

    I don't know about Tesla, but generally speaking the "cabin filters" in cars are close to trash. There is just no reason today what the standard couldn't be MERV-16 filtering which is the equivalent of an N-95 mask. That will get rid of a LOT of stuff to include much/most smoke. The only thing to add might be some "activated carbon/charcoal" to take up any organic vapors.

    Carbon fibre tube with a seam? I've not commented on the knitted carbon fibre thing but would have expected the tight bound radial to have had the centrifugal [?] forces better contained. Very hard to fit a knitted tube at the same binding pressure. I wonder if that photo Sandy was sent was a bit of fun? Time will tell I guess. A great video as usual, thanks for the most excellent presentation.

  • @toddmarshall7573

    I agree. Tesla was wrapping on that fiber a revolution at a time...the length of the motor. That gives enormous strength against centrifugal force tendencies. You can't do that with a mesh. A mesh would do nothing at all. And if back forth was an issue, Tesla would have done a two pass wrap with a counteracting bias. It's not an issue. There is no lateral force. Sandy got gamed!

    Sandy is on it at the end of the video. Sandy hints, Tesla moves fast 💨!!! Where is the competition? 🦗 🦗 🦗 They’ll never move that fast and that is why they are where they are. Thank Sandy and Team!!!

    I admit to not looking forward to this video from the thumbnail title or subject matter, but was very surprised with how interesting it proved to be in the end. Such a great presentation by two great technicians who happen to also be great presenters.

    Watch everyone of your videos and really appreciate the deep dive and details you provide. My Model Y to arrive shortly will be the first car I'll own that I know more about how and why it was designed, assembled and what it's made of than any product I've purchased before. One detail that would allow me to enjoy your videos more is for your editor to insert a volume envelope and manually equalize the audio. I'm wearing out the volume on my remote especially of the recent Plaid S video with 4 contributors and thjs one as well. Thanks

    Sue was great at explaining things, what a great addition to the team. I have a very narrow use case for the HEPA filter. I work essentially in between two half’s of a waste water treatment facility. We were there first, just to be clear, but our neighbors on two sides can, at times, be a bit fowl to the nose. I get in my Y, after work, tap bio weapon defense mode and almost instantly the air in the cabin is dramatically improved with regards to any smells that might have crept in while sitting for an 8 hour work shift.
