    Did you ever go to Scotty's Castle in Death Valley? They have a water wall inside the castle that cools it. It was cold in there and 114 outdoors! Austin has water shortage issues, so an outdoor water wall is a very bad idea. A co-worker at IBM built a big house in the city limits in an area where they aren't allowed to drill a well and there is no city water. ALL of the big houses there use rainwater capture as their only source of water. I suppose they have to haul water during droughts -- and Texas has a lot of drought years!

    Unfortunately, in the UK, we are seeing the cost of insuring electric cars being distributed. Sure the insurance for EVs is going up the most but the insurers realise that if they just pile all the associated risk onto EV owners then EVs will become uninsurable which goes against the government’s nett zero agenda. So unfortunately, ICE car owners are having to take on some of the EV risk. This is why petrol car drivers, like me, who have had a year of safe driving without any accidents or claims have seen their premiums increase by 55%.

    I’m skeptical about all these totaled out EVs with minor dents to the battery housing. I feel like these things are merely cosmetic. To replace the underside of that battery housing, the entire battery pack including the “penthouse” (Tesla only component housing) has to be removed, and dissected. That alone is pretty labor intensive. And once opened, they can inspect the battery packs themself. But because there is any damage, even if it’s just paint damage, the insurer must pay, and any type of repairs, even if the batteries were good and safe, now puts that vehicle at risk for fires, thanks to all the fears the media has decided to create (damaged ICE vehicles catch fire too). Do you know how many dings and scrapes your muffler has? How about cross member? Do you file a claim every time you scrap your car on something? No. It’s stupid. And you risk your own vehicle being totaled simply because you’re asking the insurance company to either repair or replace that damaged part. And yes, I’ve seen the inside of many battery packs with a dented scrape on the underside. They are designed to take minor impacts like that. As long as it doesn’t pierce through, or raise a battery pack high enough from where it’s supposed to sit, it’s fine.

    Scotty, love your videos and you obviously have a lot of experience…. I own a 2023 Model Y and only pay 1150.00 per year for full coverage with a large insurance carrier. I have put 15,000 miles on the car in 6 months and obviously taken a lot of road trips with no issues. Teslas charging network is second to none. The Model Y is the most American built car you can buy, one of the safest cars you can buy, and there is a reason it’s number three on the top selling cars in the US and number one in the world. You really should give credit where credit is due. Is it perfect, no, but show me a car that is… LOL. It really is a nice car that is unbelievably efficient, fast, good handling, and very cheap to drive.

Tesla has never actually sold EVs that weren't unit-profitable. The main cost is these huge battery packs. Jeep just put out a new one that gets the same range as a Tesla with 2.6x more kWh. They also aren't as efficient at making the packs, so they cost more to make. If you think a $20k pack from Tesla is nuts, try an $80k pack from a competitor. Oy! Giving a bad name to EVs for sure.

    What do you think of Canada mandating EVs by 2035? The entire population of California is more than all of Canada. We often had issues getting vehicles in Canada because the US has a better market. I have been watching job postings at the Local Tesla looking for a service tech for nearly 3 years, but the dealer never has stock. Apparently, Riven is in BC, but when you sign up for a test drive, they say I would need to go to the US because there are none in Canada. I priced out a Model Y a few months ago when my wife asked if we could afford it; the insurance would be 3 times what I currently pay, and the payments on the car per month were more than my rent payment. I then cost out a cheaper EV, and even a vehicle that would only get 100 miles of range was way out of my price range. The other kicker is I rent, and the landlord would not be able to install a charging dock; it would have to be metered separately, and the cost would be so high that I could not afford to pay for it. My only recourse to charge the car would be 12 miles away at the Library; very few service stations have chargers.

  • @nrich5127
    @nrich51275 ай бұрын

    Scotty I agree with your analysis of the Tesla insurance problem but I would like you consider that all these issues are based on todays technology which is at least 3 years old. From concept to production is a minimum of 3 years. The electric car battery technology is still evolving with breakthroughs every 6 months. Another technology to consider is solid state battery which is starting to come to fruition. The advantages are huge - ultra fast charging - no fire safety issues - longevity of the battery after many charging cycles - relative cost effective production costs - competitive weight to energy capacity - looks like Toyota might have the winning formula. Less than 5 minute recharge is a game changer.

    Scotty, You got the units wrong on RI's power consumption. Rhode Island had a total summer capacity of 2,131 MW through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 7,194 GWh in 2022. So that 1200 MW of wind will be over half of RI's power. I don't like wind either, it still needs oil and high maintenance. I think solar and iron air grid batteries are the way to go. On nuclear, the question is where are you going to put the waste from that 30% efficient glorified steam engine cycle?

    The efficiency of windmills depends on how much the wind blows. Here, in Denmark, it is quite windy. We have a lot of windmills. Many days, the windmills deliver all the power we use. This is for 5 million people. Solar, on the other hand, does not work so well here. Just to say, that it absolutely can work, if you live somewhere windy. It is cheaper than nuclear. But it is not baseload. So you need alternatives for when the wind is not blowing. In our case, it is Scandinavian energy. Norwegian water power and Finnish nuclear, mainly.

    Your age, car age, driving history and location all play into cost of insurance. Your specific insurance cost is fairly meaningless. Get a quote for a Tesla and compare it to a same age Camry. You’ll see your paying more. Then there’s the cost of battery replacement, tires, and your time spent watching the thing charge. More cost for less. I think that’s Scotty’s point.

    Sold my 2017 Rogue (22k) and bought a 2020 Outlander PHEV (14k). Don't know if I made a mistake but wanted to get rid of it for a while. The total damage was $8900 but expecting a tax rebate of $4000.00.

    Chrsyler, GM & Ford were just interested in reducing manufacturing costs which is why they make them in Mexico and use cheaper quality parts. They don't follow the Japanese quality philosophy

    Chrysler isn't as big then GM and Ford anymore. They aren't an independent company either. Stelanttis has discontinued all the car models that Chrysler and Dodge made including the Caravan, so they very few models in the Chrysler and Dodge lineup

    My current insurance cost on my ICE car is $1300.00 per year in NJ. I got a quote of $1600.00 for a Tesla Model Y Long Range. Not too bad for NJ if you ask me.

    I’m in my 50’s, good driving record, my Tesla model Y costs $1006/year to insure (USAA, so legit) - that’s with $300 deductibles for collision and comprehensive. Who doesn’t like Scotty?! But when he just throws out numbers with no context it undermines his credibility and just makes the whole thing look like petrol-head FUD. Relax people.. you will love your EV when the time comes.

    Get a quote for same age Camry w same coverage. There’s your comparison. Vehicle age, miles driven per year, your age and location all play into cost. Trust me, you are paying more and as companies learn the true cost to repair/replace EV’s, it will get worse. Oh, and talk to me about repair cost when you have 200k miles. I have nearly 100k on my Camry and have only paid for tires (cheaper and last longer than yours) and 5k mile oil changes. Plan to drive it 200k more, at least. Your Tesla is a throwaway.

    @@timgray3311 yep, I love how the EV crowd cries about how they will save on oil. Changes! My Honda is daily driven over 20 years, tons of miles never any issue just by the book maintenance. And when those EV batteries cause issues or other things break they will love their throw away car

    Scotty is correct though, EVs cost more to insure. Forbes shows that the Tesla Model 3 costs more to insure than a Mercedes C class on average. Since you are a good 50yr old driver I bet if you drove a Corolla instead your insurance would be cheaper. That's the point.
