    Live in Northern California. My Powerwall was backordered for 18 months! After install, didn't take long to experience first outage. Transition from grid to battery and back so smooth, didn't even know I was on battery until I looked at my smart app. My utility company was the best promoter of Powerwall... By dropping the ball on grid power.

    Love this, Sam! I have Tesla Solar + Tesla Powerwalls, have been participating in California’s Tesla Virtual Power Plant, and keeping my family cool during this heat wave. Looks like we need an update on this. We used Swell Energy to install our Powerwall in Redwood City CA. The equipment was slow in coming (about 2 yrs), but the Service front Swell has been great. For example, when Tesla discontinued cellular support for the gateway, Swell came out and wired the Unit for Ethernet at no charge.

    It's because the current Tesla system doesn't support V2L / Biderectional charging. Mainly because it will significantly increase the degradation of the current NCA batteries that Tesla uses. Tesla is now switching to LFP batteries made by BYD initially, and they have trialled software to allow its use in future vehicles.

    The other trouble is you need to have multiple battery packs with the current setup to have much backup. 13 kw is not even a days worth for most people . Just enough to make things not miserable in a power out. I have Solar just don't see a need to get one days worth of power back up.

  • @dangrass

    @dangrass

    hmm...well, maybe if you run AC all the time, but otherwise it's plenty. My 3,000 sq. ft house in California uses 12kwh/day. And then there are the 19 solar panels on the roof that can generate over 40 kwh/day. Have wanted to buy one of these things for several years now. And now we can be part of a VPP. Can hardly wait.

  • @bobgriffin316

    @bobgriffin316

    You are missing the point. It is worth having the battery. It would mean that you can store the electricity that you generated during the day when you are out at work. You can then use this stored energy at night when you come home from work. It would mean that you would use much more of the power that you generate. You would not be sending this energy that you produce during the day back into the grid and getting very little money for your energy that you give back.

  • @ctuna2011

    @ctuna2011

    Жыл бұрын

    But if you have Solar and are generating more than you are using you already offset the night time use and maybe then some as in my case so the only use if for battery back up during power outages. In my case I generate an extra 3000 kw a year off a 12 panel 4.7kw system. Sized for the eventual electric car.

    The Power Wall 2 costs around AUD $17,000-$19,000 depending on who installs it and where you live in Australia. This has little chance of a payback in 10 years according to my sums. A homemade battery system consisting of 16 LFP Prismatic 1kWh cells, and a cheap off grid inverter can cost under AUD$5,000. (Assuming you have the PV panels already) This has a reasonable chance of payback in 3 to 5 years. If you don't have the background to do a DIY job, I'm sure some sparkies would enjoy the challenge ;) So called 'experts' tell me that this is BS, but I set up such a system last year and was so pleased I have also set up another one. The "virtual battery" setup (in California) could make the Tesla equivalent more attractive, but it is hard to know if it could compete with the low-cost DIY setup. I hear that PW2 systems need an internet connection - is this still true? If true that would be a deal breaker for me! Is it still true that without grid power, the Tesla cannot recharge it's own battery?

    BTW Before you buy anything... think about how much power storage (kWh) you need/can afford. Evening or Overnight capacity? Or power for several cloudy days? Will you go for a Time-of-use plan where you can get less expensive power from the grid at night and weekends? Gloomy days in winter require either grid or generator backup in my experience. What limits you will impose on the maximum power draw. E.g. Kettle + toaster + microwave + pump can be more than 5 kW; will this overload your cells or inverter?

    Thanks for your excellent reporting on anything EV, Energy Storage or Renewable Energy related (not sure when you have time to sleep)!! Regarding Tesla's Virtual Powerplant system, you might want to point out that a Powerwall that is connected to the grid can already earn $2/kWh for electrical energy fed back into the grid during times of exceptional or peak demand on the grid. In some regions, like California or Texas, this payback could go a long way toward paying back the Powerwall's initial cost, substantially lowering its effective cost as a standby/emergency electrical power source, or as a means to store excess solar from your PV rooftop panels during the day if netmetering is not made available by the local utility, or as a means to avoid high peak-time rates for electricity, like from say 5pm to 10pm, when everyone starts cranking up their electrical loads at home.

My only regret is not having bought two because we are heavy electricity users and usually use up the overnight charge plus solar before the end of the day. So, for about 9 months out of the year, I build up a credit, which I then draw from for the other 3 months when there is less sun, and my usage is higher. I strongly disagree with this, and so does PG&E. We *are* having power issues, and warnings of rolling blackouts have happened nearly every day during this heat wave. The following cities lost power yesterday evening: Alameda, Lodi, Santa Clara (Silicon Valley Power), Palo Alto, Healdsburg, and Ukiah. Granted, power was cut there by mistake in anticipation of blackouts, but the point remains that the Governor, PG&E, and CAISO have been issuing warnings and asking everybody to reduce load demand between 4-9 this whole heat wave… including today! I have two Powerwalls and am enrolled in Tesla’s Virtual Power Plant. I charged up all day using solar, and sent over 20kWh to the grid between 6-9PM. These programs start small, but are growing exponentially. Imagine if Tesla vehicles, or any EV, could participate in feeding back to the grid during energy emergencies? Really exciting times ahead!

I’m still waiting for battery chemistry change, I’m not about to put Nimnh in anywhere. Powerwall 3 is a product I don’t need as I already have inverters. FYI, Tesla is stopping referral discount on Model Y in Aus in Oct and discount not applicable to Model 3.

    Many places, it's ILLEGAL to be off the grid, or the power company gets to charge you a large fixed cost fee whether you use the grid or not. (I don't like this, but the power lobby has a LOT of pull in many locations). That being said, I'm not convinced that being on the grid at all makes sense, as things could go wrong with your system too. Might make more sense to have 2 or 3 Powerwalls, and try to buy power cheap (or get it "free" from solar) and sell it dear (if the power lobby in your locale doesn't manage to prevent that). Also, you may as well use the power your high required fixed cost payment entitles you to (for no additional charge).

    Don't have to be 100% off grid. Use batteries as arbitrage. Don't even need solar to do that. Solar can be added to the amounts sold back during the day, not used to charge the batteries. By enlarge, the sweet spot is charging at night, discharging during the day. This approach opens the possibility for PWs at residential and small commercial spaces, small megapacks to link those at the apartment block/neighborhood level, a mini-VPP. Then those link up for a larger area VPP at the municipal/regional level. Loop in the cars too. Since peak electric rates are late afternoon-early evening, the cars can plug in to discharge through peak, recharging at night. All worked out with your AI & calendar.

    Each Powerwall 2 costs $5,550, and the average US home will need 2 or 3 to supply its power needs. A single Powerwall can provide limited backup power for critical appliances and lights, but not enough for the entire power usage of a typical house. That's a big bit expensive here in Australia. It's pretty clear this battery game is for only the few Aussies who could afford it. I don't see too many reports with Aussies who live away from the big cities being able to afford or even want all this electric wizardry.

    Adding a Powerwall to our home, along with Solar, was the best thing we have done for the house. We live in Northern CA, and our particular area has upwards of 7 power outages every year (PG&E, our local power company, is pathetic.) We now breeze through the outages which have ranged from a few minutes, to over 36 hours, and keep the house running where all our neighbors are in the dark. We have friends who come over to charge their cellphones, or do their laundry, or even put food in our fridge and chest freezer. We also have been participating in the Tesla and PG&E VPP (Virtual PowerPlant) and it has been really interesting to see that the aggregate combined output of all the Powerwalls taking part has been up to 24 Megawatts! That's a pretty significant, and instantaneous amount to help support the PG&E grid to ride out power demand spikes. Imagine hundreds of thousands, or even millions of Powerwalls at some point in the future, maybe able to support the grid with Gigawatts!

    Isn't it also an advantage in SAFETY? I don't want a massive fire risk in my house unless the odds that happens are truly negligible. Or I put the batteries outside away from the house, maybe in their own little shed, in the area my whole house NG generator sits. Having two separate backup systems seems ideal, re energy security in winter or bad storms (with sump pumps). By the time the 10 year old NG whole house generator is getting unreliable (only one minor common part issue so far), maybe just replacing it with a few highly reliable, reasonably priced large batteries of LFP or better chemistry. Even for someone who lives alone and only uses about 500 kWh a month, a week, and especially two, of emergency backup power takes some doing, even just for heat, the fridge, the sump pumps, etc. (And we get such outages now and again with ice storms, bad wind storms, etc).

    We will go to a multi-chemistry battery storage world, with each major application served by chemistry best suited to it. The requirements are not the same across different applications. Take the common 3 examples- 1. Land transport - Cars and trucks need high energy density - KWH per Kg weight, which is where NMC found their first blockbuster success. LFP is inching up and already good enough for most practical range car applications. Trucks may need higher energy density to be commercially viable for longer distances. Trains also have the option of overhead electrification - this is how long distance electric trains run even today. In areas where full route electrification is too expensive (compared to even more expensive hydrogen?), we can easily do a hybrid approach - Smaller battery packs that can be recharged by overhead electrification of only small sections of the route. 2. Home batteries/local storage: The weight does not matter as much, because these are fixed batteries. There is no weight penalty on moving them in use. LFP with thrice more cycles, but also more weight makes good sense here. The far lower fire risk from LFP batteries is also important in convincing people. Nobody wants NMC's far higher fire and explosion risk inside their homes. 3. Grid scale batteries especially for long term power storage will likely go to flow batteries with completely different chemistry using cheap and abundant materials (like the ones proposed by the likes of Ambri, Form, or ESS). Low cost per KWH stored, large capacity, high useful life and high reliability with low maintenance are important in grid batteries. Li-ion, especially NMC, has been used for all three scenarios simply because mass scale production of Li-ion made them practically the only real option commercially available. We will see alternatives even for transport and home batteries. Chemistries like Sodium Ion or the Lithium-less solid state batteries will come up. There are too many vehicle makers and utilities without the scale in sourcing Lithium batteries. It it is early days of the battery revolution, with much less that 1% of energy storage needed at the global scale deployed so far. The scale of the future opportunity is massive. So, investors are keen on funding alternative battery options that can capture a large share of the market or rule a specific application.

    This panel can put out close to 100 watts kzread.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

    I keep hearing that supply will catch up to demand and whilst technically true an annual run rate of 70+ million vehicles is some way off. In fact in 2021 the total was 6.6 million so we can call that year one of the supply/production challenge. Now other than the mere fact just because you produce 70+ million doesn't mean people will buy them makes us look at most popular Brands. Obviously Tesla is by far the brand leader in the China, US, Europe and in many other countries but supply to other regions is limited so this lead is not an active metric. Now BYD is ramping significantly and part of their China first strategy has seen them make considerable gains there. But another key strategy is that BYD seems to be targeting supplemental markets as a priority rather than focusing on the US and Europe. This may see BYD gain first mover advantage in South East Asia, Australia, South America and the Middle East. Now Tesla's loss of market share has been highly touted for a long time. However the theory that as Tesla losses market share they will lose revenue and or profitability is not the case. Afterall if you go from 1.5 million cars to 5 million cars by 2025 do you really care what market share you hold? Or do you care about how efficiently you make those cars and how much profit you generate? VW and Toyota are the largest car companies in the world and they only produce 10+ million a year. But unlike Tesla they do not make anywhere the level of profit Tesla does. 50 billion dollars that's how much profit Tesla will make when they start producing 5 million cars a year. Elon Musk has proclaimed 20 million cars a year is the goal by 2030. But whether it's 10 million or 20 million do you really think Tesla will care if people say "Hah your a liar, you failed you only made 15 million cars". Yes I'm sure Tesla will be saying Oh wow is me we only made 150+ billion dollars in profit.....

  • @robsengahay5614

    @robsengahay5614

    Tesla profit margin will be tightened considerably as they ramp up to produce, say, 10 million cars per year. The market for Tesla cars (and BEVs in general) is going to be ultimately limited by price. New ICE cars are literally half the price to buy. There will come a tipping point - and I suspect that will not be far away with a global recession looming - where, for the first time, supply of BEVs including Tesla will exceed demand. At that point expect Tesla to start active marketing and for prices to come down. Obviously Tesla is in a better place to do this because of the higher margins they are achieving on the cars but you are wrong to extrapolate the profit margins of annual production of 1 million cars to annual production of 15 million cars. It just doesn’t work that way.

    Sam, I’m in California, and while threats of blackouts are real, in practice I haven’t had a blackout in many years. I do get warnings that my power might be cut for an hour at a time, but it hasn’t happened yet. I have several small lithium power packs (1kw and 2kw) which can keep the refrigerator and TV going for half a day, maybe a day. I wanted a Tesla power pack for my solar panels, but could not get one when Tesla stopped providing them by themselves. Now, I really don’t need one since I’ve moved on with a temporary solution. Even if I decided to upgrade to a whole home battery, I doubt I would choose Tesla at this point since my solar panels use microinverters, converting immediately to A/C at the solar panel. Maybe if Tesla allowed their cars to provide bidirectional charging I would consider a Tesla Powerwall, but for now I’m going to wait until production ramps up a bit and/or I can include my Tesla as a home battery supply.
