You said it yourself, it does nothing different than homelink, except it has a smartphone app and requires a service fee. You can get the homelink parts and install them yourself for much less than $350, so I don’t really see how this is an improvement. Frankly, I’m annoyed that they want a subscription to automatically open your garage door.

Agreed. I have the myQ unit already installed in my garage and the fact that they want a monthly or annual subscription cost is insane to me just to open a garage door. I would think no other car brand has a subscription cost for homelink

I bought the HomeLink module for my 2023 Model Y from my local Tesla service center for $200. They included the $30 bracket and 3¢ bolt as well, but said there was no charge for these items since they now came as a kit (I think they were mistaken, but I wasn't going argue against something that was in my favor). Installing the hardware was relatively easy, but I encountered an "unauthorized configuration change" error when I ran the HomeLink retrofit routine in service mode. I researched and found that others have been experiencing this issue as well (seems related to a change in the 2024 software releases whether intentional or a bug). I requested service. Tesla sent a mobile technician to update my vehicle's configuration at no cost to me. I now have working HomeLink for $200+tax. I was willing to pay $230.03+tax for HomeLink, but not $350+tax. I considered myQ, but did not want an internet-based solution. HomeLink works great and I love the auto open/close feature when I arrive/leave.

Thanks for mentioning the subscription cost. I hadn't seen that before. Seems rather pricey for a one-trick pony application. Although the Tesla HomeLink solution seems rather pricey too for what should be nothing more than a modified $30 remote.

I’ve had the MyQ for several years. I got my MYP in 2021 & got the Homelink as the MyQ integration with Tesla wasn’t available yet. My experience with the MyQ is that it can be finicky although it’s been much better over the last 6 months or so. Based on other comments, linking the Tesla could cause some challenges. The Homelink is very stable but can’t identify whether the garage door is open or closed. This has been challenging at times as I don’t always park in my garage at home. Given the video & comments, folks should be able to choose the one they think will best work for them.

I love your video. It's been the most straightforward and easy to understand. I just installed mine in my model Y yesterday, it seems to work as advertised. FYI to anybody else who wants to buy one, If you need a second garage door control, buy the whole unit and not just the second door sensor, the whole unit is cheaper than just the second door sensor alone. Now you have spare parts if anything else fails. -Jack ♑︎

Just had the Homelink controller installed. It works as expected so far. I do have one issue that I wish that they could address. Our community has an incoming and an outgoing gate. The automated trigger is based on a radius from a known location. The problem is that it triggers in incoming gate when I’m leaving. I wish they could include direction in the setup like inside of this radius and heading south. It’s still worth it to me since I don’t need to dig a remote out of the console.

Hopefully they updated it later on which would be great, but I went ahead and installed the homelink on my wife's vehicle.

About five and a half years ago we added the MyQ to our garage door opener. This because we had an older vehicle that didn’t work with the newer opener interface. I needed an additional piece of kit. $50 back then to hang off the opener with the dongle on the Wi-Fi hub to make it all work. That was great for phone access. As long as the Wi-Fi was working. Smart stuff stops being smart when the power cycles or a kitten knocks the router off the back of a cabinet. 😅 Anyway when the old car died and the Model Y replaced it, we were back to the old school opener and my phone. For some reason the rest of the family could never keep the app on their phones working. I did find the MyQ app would work off my Apple Watch, series 4, if I had the app open on my phone. Then came the latest software update. I linked the car to the account and set the distance for auto open. I didn’t choose to auto close. Yet. So far we’ve not experienced any issues. It’s nice to have the car open the door on our return home. Makes fumbling for remotes or phones a piece of history. One other nice thing is I can open the door from anywhere I have cell service. Our kit did not have a separate door sensor. And the dongle part of the kit was free from the manufacturer back when we got it. Now if someday our Model Y will recognise our driveway as parking and auto self park by backing in, I’ll be a happy guy. 😊

MyQ is working half the time to close my garage as my car pulls away from the house. It works every time to open the garage as I return home. I don’t know if this is something for Tesla to improve with future software updates, or if it is an issue with the handoff from Wi-Fi to cellular. Regardless, love this feature and hope it can be improved.

It is a known problem with LED lights.. the frequency can interfere. That is why when you open it from the car, the lights are typically not on (upon return) and when you open to leave, you use the button in the garage. When you close it the lights are still on. I was told this by MyQ support. I changed mine but while better it is still wildly inconsistent even with a WAP for the wifi network in the actual garage. I bought the Homelink and it works flawlessly. I would rather pay the $300 installed one time than the $5 a month for frustration , in perpetuity

Three questions: 1: What are the voice commands for garage door operation? 2. How are valets prevented from operating the garage door? 3. How does 5 year TCO of MyQ service compare to traditional garage remote use?

  • @iowatesla

    @iowatesla

    Жыл бұрын

    1. I wish I knew from inside the car. You can setup Siri integration if you play with the settings I think. 2. I need to test it, but I'm betting that the garage door functions are not accessible when valet mode is enabled. 3. This is personal preference. Clearly the old fashioned garage door opener is going to win out cost-wise. I'm a bit OCD and would actually drive back home to check to see if my door was closed. This saves me the trip. That's worth something to me.

I had a MyQ before this rolled out. I loved it. I didn't use it with my phone, but it was a good way to make sure it was closed without having to go to the garage, and for Amazon Key garage delivery (a must for the cold winter here in MN) and to let people in remotely. I was so happy to have Tesla integrate this since our clicker isn't working that well despite changing batteries- we seemingly lost signal range with it too. That being said, MyQ charging a fee is a rather bummer, but for less than a Caribou Coffee a month, it is worth it. There have been a few instances where I have had to use the manual button on the screen to make it work - both to open and to close it when leaving. And even once I had to use my manual remote (keep it in your glove box, you never know when your internet will be out and it won't work!). Overall, it's worth it, at least for me. I recently had to change the battery in the sensor on the door. It lasted about a year, and it died in the coldest of temps here in Minnesota. Quick trip to Target in the electronics section for the battery, and 1 minute to swap it out, and it worked effortlessly again.

Thanks for the showing up this. However, I still think this solution isn’t perfect to all the scenarios yet. For example, I like to program my offices’ parking gates which aren’t MyQ compatible or their relatives. Second, sometimes, when my Tesla exits the garage, MyQ and Tesla do not connect well to each other because Tesla is in the process to switch from my home WiFi to its 4G signal. It seems that the conventional HomeLink solution is more reliable in both of situations.

This is all well and good for anyone buying a new Tesla who has not already purchased the HomeLink system. I currently own the HomeLink, and it works just as it should. It closes the door when I leave "automatically" and it opens it when I return, "automatically." MyQ has not "killed" it for me at least, but it has placed a MyQ app capability on my Tesla screen that is a constant "bother", since I already own and use HomeLink. The MyQ keeps popping up as I back out of my garage asking me to "link" my garage door with it, which, as you pointed out, will cost me an annual fee. What I could really use right now is a way to "remove" the MyQ app completely from my screen since, for me, to purchase it would be "redundant" and unnecessary. Can you make a video on how to get rid of MyQ?

For $350 Homelink or $299 for 10 years of MyQ + $30 for MyQ hardware.... just use the remote. Most routers these days come with Geo Fencing. My TPlink can open and close my garage door when my phone is in or out of wifi range with a generic $29 wifi garage door opener. This way, I can open/close my garage even if internet is down--assuming your garage opener has a backup battery. If you have an UPS for your router, the geo fencing will still work. MyQ doesn't work when internet is down. When internet is up, its a security vulnerability.... MyQ is purely a gimmick for non tech savy individuals.

I think its dumb that you have to purchase homelink or a third party device to open the garage with a tesla… I took delivery today and assumed that i could just pair with my garage door like any other car but that was not the case. So dumb

Not everyone has a garage. Not everyone who has a garage uses it to park in. I like the idea of not making everyone pay for hardware that not everyone will use.

Ya not dead…. While MyQ is great… but homelink is also great and isn’t going anywhere….. MyQ only operates MyQ garages…. But will not control non-MyQ garages and if live in a gated community MyQ wont operate the gate but HomeLink will….

Sorry I bought the subscription. Totally unreliable. Always work when I arrive home, but only works about 60% of the time when I leave. Has cause me to leave my door up.. Gives you a close chime, but does not close.

I hate MyQ. Their business is a scam. Forcing people to relay on the a remote service to open their garage door is bullsh!t

It’s dumb to pay for a subscription to do this; as you can buy the MyQ for your garage door and access it from your phone app. So your telling my just so Tesla will send the same command to the MyQ when I am near; I have to pay them monthly? Dumb

I agree with you. However, given the choice between this and Homelink, I pick this.
