Tesla Graduates Electrify the RV Industry - Lightship's All-Electric Trailer
Ойын-сауық
Sandy talks to Lightship Co-Founder and CEO Ben Parker and reviews the L1.
The Lightship L1 is a battery-powered trailer that can be configured with its own drive motor to reduce the towing demand to “near-zero” for the vehicle that pulls it.

I like a lot the features, particularly that telescoping aspect and the aerodynamic form. I just wish it was smaller size. I dont want to haul a trailer that big. A 12' trailer that i could haul with my model y would be amazing...

If it is self propelled, the weight may not be an issue. Control is different to towing. But the EV manufacturers would have to come to the party with changing rateings and control systems that work together.
Love the chassis, not crazy about the interior layout, prefer the Porsche prototype. This market is vastly overdue for innovation. Great company, hope they continue to innovate.
Very unique product and great interview Sandy. Looks perfect behind my CT
Looks great. I just wish they would reduce all the thermal gaps (windows). I'd like to know who they're polling who say they like a spacious RV. Everyone I know would rather have the walls covered with more storage space. On top of that, every RV I've ever seen had a minimal amount of polystyrene in the walls with single pane windows. I wish someone would install 3.5" of polyurethane closed cell or some vacuum insulated panels in the walls. If you build a great thermal envelope you dont need as much electrical power to keep the cabin comfortable.
@mriguy3202
Жыл бұрын
It would be mandatory to have a pickup truck for all your stuff....but I don't see enough storage for food, let alone clothing. Also the air conditioning is extremely power-hungry and the thermal loss or gain will be tremendous, even considering that the solar panels on the roof will help. Not practical. And they have taken a high end RV and added $35,000 in additional complexity.
@mikebalentine

This is exactly what I did with my diy trailer. Two small windows in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. Rest is insulated walls. Edit: but this is a collapsible trailer which is very smart for EV towing.

there is overhead storage that they didn’t show. and some storage where the propane would normally be. and under the couch area. they should make a storage accessory to install over one of the windows for extra though. I too think good insulation is important. and most rv parks don’t provide great views. however, you can electo-dim the windows individually- so you can optimize what you see, easily. some other videos cover additional functionality not included in this video.

This is doing a lot of things right. The same fundamental concept as the Stella Vita: Raising roof to minimise frontal area, big PV roof, aero shape, lightness. I like the Stella Vita more as I prefer a camper van to a caravan, but this is great as the trailer version. Nice to see someone finally doing it right and using the traction battery as the house battery and not having two. Nearly every conversion just adds a 2nd battery which is just wasting space, weight and efficiency. I dread to think how much it's going to cost, and it's too big to be much use in Europe. But this is the right direction and I look forward to some competition. I'm much closer to Sandy's age, than Ben's but pretty-much the only reason I have for owning a vehicle other than a bike is for camping.

I get why they chose a rain shower head, but I hate it. They use huge amounts of water and any soap you put on is rinsed straight off before you get a chance to give yourself a good scrub, defeating the entire point of having a shower in the first place. Low flow taps and shower heads are so much more efficient in terms of water usage. It might have been nice if they'd been able to incorporate a water recycling shower into the design. They will filter the water until the sensors detect that the water has become too dirty before allowing fresh water into the system.

I had been advocating for Tesla to put batteries and motors on the trailers for the Semi like the Airstream electric. After watching this it occured to me that doing the same for trailers being pulled by diesel tractors would do good things. Better mpg, better hill climbing, regeneration, better refrigeration.

Sandy Munro / Munro Live & Ben Parker, this was an inspiring video! The long wished for all-electric RV is in sight & attainable! The LightShip addresses all the issues: power assist wheels, abundant solar power generation, clean indoor air (no propane or diesel) water conserving appliances, spacious & flexible interior, and abundant natural light ! And it’s quiet, without a noisy, smelly generator. All the best, I can’t wait to see this project take off 💫
Cool! Airstream also makes Electric camper. I like this one better.
I love the overall idea, so please don't take my comments as being negative. Windows: There are way to many windows for me. We once rented one of those rooftop hotel rooms in Mexico and felt like we were in a fish bowl. I can't help wondering what it would be like in Minnesota when it is 10 below zero. And don't forget the mosquito netting. I am hoping we can order with different molded inserts; some solid with a high R-value and some with windows. The we can choose how much open we want. Aerodynamics: If the truck had a topper of the same height as the main trailer and you made that box (over the tongue) the same height also; there would be a continuous roof line all the way from the truck cab to the back of the trailer. Wouldn't that have the best aerodynamics? Backroom sink: Should be bigger backroom sink. That one looks pretty but that weird one would be dated so fast. Would also get water all over the place. Give them a chance to wash their elbows and their socks! Canopy: Needs a canopy for shade and rain. Could be a canopy embedded in the roof edge (for aerodynamic reasons). Or add a couple nacelles ala Star Trek with running lights and have the Canopy in these. Then you will truly have a Star Ship!! 🙂 Kitchen setup: Love it, love it, love it! Wonder: 1 - how many sizes this will come in 2 - total weight? 3 - likely pricing? 4 - CATL batteries? Thanks for a great idea. Tom

Very cool trailer. I have seen that guy present it before on another channel a few months ago. Big bucks but it is a great package for sure.
Been saying it for year's that it makes more sense to have a trailer with a decent battery (2nd life) pack built in as a range extender. When not in use you plug it into your home. Charge from solar pv. Forget V2L etc. Imagine all the compact cars towing one of these trailer's when on holidays. A common standard needs to be developed.
Love the Spider-Man reference! Hahaha
Sandy likes it which is great but.... More importantly, what was Sue's reaction? Inquiring minds need to know! The timing was interesting to me as earlier today I was thinking about how DOT would react to camping trailers with electric kicker motors in them to extend range of the tow vehicles along with what could be done to add such to existing pop-up/hi-low or teardrop trailers. I think this changes the travel trailer game entirely... being able to drop the trailer stand, disconnect the tow hitch, pop the top and take a shower, plug in the EV tow vehicle to charge it you like. no generator setup, no propane, no loud AF 12V water pump.
Sandy should've brought his R1T and tow it for a while to see how it really works 😊
Looks amazing can’t wait to get one!
Using this for an electric food truck is a slam dunk. No more noisy polluting generators. Compatible with new electric trucks. Maybe even charge your truck while boondocking! No need for propane, either. Make it convertible from food truck to RV and I can tow it with my Cybertruck for business or vacation. I may well just be able to stock the regular trailer with equipment and make it a mobile kitchen. Catering, festivals, events. This thing would be a total boss at Lakes Of Fire or Burning Man.
I’m not convinced anyone at this company has ever gone RVing. Not every campground has great views so windows are great, but curtains are a must to increase privacy and keep things cool. More storage is also a must for any real camping.

Larger than what I'm considering for retirement in a few years, but that gives Lightship and others time to come out with newer, smaller, and even better models. I'm definitely intrigued.
Thanks for sharing. Like #662. Cool product!
I love the 'tech' in this project. The design is leaving me a bit cold. In a house, we like big windows to bring the outside, in. When you're in a camper, you are literally within the environment so I see less of a need for stonking great panes of glass everywhere. I'd be more interested is some sort of frosted transparent material (giving the impression of rice paper maybe?) that let in the light, but diffused it and gave a bit more privacy. lot's of options to open these panels out to let the air in. Like other comments, I see problems with stone chips, and be careful how you park it cause windows seem to attract tree branches ha ha.
Ok we spend over a 100 days a year in our airstream and I’ll give a few things I noticed. The bed is an afterthought and would be good for minimal number of days and people especially when you have to make it each day and no storage was shown for any blankets or sheets. There seemed to be minimal stowage throughout. Our classic 30 has tons of storage. People that like EV’s like tech and this didn’t even show a TV. Not even cheap small one or stereo system. They didn’t even mention heat or air and you can’t see any ducts so not sure about that. Appliance type was great but most would rather have a bigger fridge than a dishwasher. This seems for people just spending a day or two out and they won’t need to do dishes. And the fridge style won’t be easy to use. The aesthetics of the bathroom were great but that sink is a joke and needs to go. It’s built for a 3 yr old. You need a air fan for exhaust and temp control. Our airstream has radiant heat that is incredible and silent. The large shower is great. Didn’t mention size of any tanks. Outside you need a receptacle. A satellite or Starlink connection. More storage. An outside shower, awning, and you need to be able to carry bikes. Preferably e bikes which are heavy so something on the back or at least a hitch to attach to. And all people that pull trailers have some type of anti sway hitch or like us we have an incredible propride hitch that is zero sway. The front has so many cowlings near the hitch that it doesn’t look like anything could be added. Maybe you have a fancy system that controls the wheels for braking along with the motor. Another plus would be a DC to DC cable to run from the tow vehicle to charge the trailer. I’m sure not all people will tow with an EV. You don’t want a limited market like that. Aerodynamics are great and overall looks and styling and materials just need some changes and you’ll get a bigger market. This seems like it’s meant to be used just on a weekend.

I like the double axle. You don’t necessarily save energy with this pusher but you do have more available energy to start your trip and going forward and reduce by 66% your charging stops. You also reduce the strain on your puller, save brakes, wheels, suspension (double axle), etc. Windows are great for connecting with nature but unfortunately have low R and U ratings. Double pane is getting closer to a 3-pane solution 😊. How much more energy you consume with 2 fridge + 1 freezer? Love the dishwasher. The I guess they will rethink the door like two-part horse stall doors. 200KCA$ is not a cheap proposition. How will this function in the northern climates?

I bet there would be a market just for the battery and motor trailer without the camper part of it. I didn't know the range loss was that bad so having a powered trailer could be very useful to anyone with an EV that wants to tow something. Maybe even Uhaul might want something like this, though I'm the down side would be the crazy expense of it. Considering a 80kw battery I bet the base price would be at least $30,000 just for an empty trailer. Which for most people wouldn't be worth it since you could just get a whole truck for that price.
"Bringing the out side in" seems like they took the marketing pitch and styling of the ssiling catamarans that can't sail.

Modern Class B vans equipped with lithium battery packs like the Volta battery system on Winnebago's Travato model are well known for run time. I hope this company is taking any advantage of using 12v appliances if possible to extend boondocking range. My Embassy RV has all systems in 12v, except for the microwave and TV and it works perfectly. If I were to own a trailer like this, I would likely use gas powered truck with a second alternator to charge the trailer, if that is possible on the trailer. My 2021 Embassy RV on the Ford Transit 350 HD chassis has the second alternator to charge the lithium pack when driving and when it gets low at the campground. I'd want the same for this kind of trailer. Love seeing Sandy get into the nuts and bolts of the underside. Great and interesting video...

It is nice having a steady 13.5 power supply. Eventually it will be electric propulsion then you just need a small engine for battery charging. Plan on not using propane. Electric hot water, heating and cooking along with refrigeration. It will always be cheaper to use home appliances because they are mass produced.

Two separate motors allow for more dynamic sway control plus remote control for parking on a campsite without having to back it in with a tow vehicle, easier hitching by having the trailer drive up to the hitch and the ability to back the trailer into an EV charging station by its remote control. It's a more traditional AirStream shell design with better aerodynamics and a completely new chassis. Leverages bluetooth and voice commands to control onboard systems and perform diagnostics by simply asking questions. Full solar roof plus for those that were concerned about storage it has upper cabinets and fewer windows than the Lightship. Designed for EV towing but also reduces fuel consumption when towed by ICE vehicles. AirStream with Thor Industries backing them might be in a better position to bring this to market since they already have the fully vetted out production facilities and capacity to do so. Its based on Thor's ToBel platform so it will be interesting to see what else is in the works in Thor's other product lines. I blinked and missed this revelation last year. Oops! Best!

Sway control is already solved on modern trucks of all types. The parking assist isn’t really worth the extra complexity

@@mattbrew11 try driving a tow vehicle with sway control … it works in the brochure, not on the road and trailer brakes are not differential, so the trailer can only pull the vehicle, it can't arrest the fishtail. I have a '21 F-150 and it does well, but its weakness is downhill curves … requires the trailer brakes to do the work … regen on the trailer would be "free" energy and differential braking would solve the physics equations of trailer sway going downhill through curves.. As for parking, again, in practice, close quarters parking is practically impossible with a bumper pull. Being able to unhitch and maneuver the trailer into a tight spot is valuable … it can also be an option … but I think dual motors would prove _less expensive_ because the belly of chassis can remain open to carry the battery, independent suspension favors independent drive modules, etc. Lightship is also early in this alpha development and will be looking at shorter trailers, off-road suspension … modular drives make for a more versatile shared platform. Maybe even hub motors. Last I heard they don't have a battery vendor contract (despite the comments made in passing in this video) and don't have a motor chosen. They're rumored to be looking at a partnership with VW for a "id" drive unit (maybe that's more than a rumor.)

@@neilfromclearwaterfl81 Right. That's the demo I'm referencing. I can only hope that Airstream is treating Lightship seriously and will do a lot more with their estream product to compete with the innovative advances we see in the L1. There's another EV RV vendor with fold-out PV awnings and 70kWh+ … that's a heavy trailer, but seems like a more realistic semi-ff-road traveler.

@@mattbrew11 Yes to a degree the stability control helps however with additional stress on the tow vehicles braking system which equals heat and wear plus brake fade so no substitute for a well engineered system on the trailer. We still see too many of these "Modern" trucks laying on their sides after being overwhelmed by trailer sway. Parking assist is a side bar benefit to having a solar powered trailer which also has a traction motor to increase tow vehicle fuel economy making every ICE powered tow vehicle somewhat of a HYBRID when towing the E-Trailer. They had to have a control module for the traction motors and such which came from automotive so why not leverage the stability control and braking control that those automotive systems are capable of? This is vastly superior to mechanical hitch mounted sway dampers that wear and need adjustment since they can't automatically adjust themselves to changing conditions. The mechanical systems also require a level of user expertise for them to understand when they need adjustment and be capable of doing so. Just the possibility to have regenerative braking on the trailers drive motors is a great thing when descending long grades and a great safety feature. Parking assist is just a foot note compared to all the other benefits. Best!
