You can identify excuses when you’re in control for some behaviours so you downgrade their significance in your mind, but when you have passengers, they will not have that same comfort and are also unable to intervene and likely to be more disconcerted by minor quirks.

I would love to more of this, but probably with a few changes. 1) I think a split-screen view would be better; showing both perspectives at the same time 2) It would probably be better if you were in contact with each other through the whole thing so you can pause or reset if one of the cars totally messes up like with the lack of internet 3) Make sure all your settings are the same, including speed offset

This is really good and helpful. My MY behaves just like Matt says his did at the beginning of Beta. I frequently have to stop it after only 10 or 15 seconds, it can rarely handle any real interactions where other cars are around. I'm never comfortable just letting it do its thing on the neighborhood streets, because I'm sure all the other cars around me are just like "what in the world? why doesn't this guy just drive the car?" I keep hoping for better with each beta release, but so far, no joy.

I’ve had beta since last September so I’ve had experience with quite a few versions. It was getting to the point where I actually enjoyed using it since it rarely made any serious mistakes and only needed coaxing with the accelerator pedal but that was getting predictable and with coaxing FSD would follow the correct path. With this version, I would be reluctant to have anyone else in the car while it was engaged. In a previous career I drove a squad car. If I was following a car that drove the way FSD did on my last trip, I would’ve pulled it over and given that driver a field sobriety test. It was that bad. Hopefully the next version will get us back on the right path.

This video is great! I’ve had FSD beta for 7 months now and honestly it hasn’t improved much at all. I’m starting to think FSD is a joke. Some turning has improved but the idea that it is getting closer to public release is laughable. This video proves my point perfectly. FSD has literally tried to kill me at least 20 times, crossing lines getting onto a highway on-ramp (with traffic coming in that lane at high speeds), almost getting into accidents through every round-a-bout (crossing lanes back and forth for no reason), or jamming on the brakes for no reason with a flashing yellow light on a highway, then stopping in the middle of the road after passing the flashing light. Phantom braking has improved (a little) in 7 months, but the idea Tesla is going to open this soon to the general public is a joke. I have driven at least 2 million miles in my lifetime and never had an accident. FSD has almost gotten me killed (or at least into an accident) at least 20 times in under 10k miles driven on it. Paying $12k for FSD today is a mistake, and I’m a huge tesla fanboy. I paid $5k for it 3 years ago and $5k isn’t worth the auto lane change functionality. I would never buy another Tesla with FSD until it is level 5 (maybe in 10 years?).

I have had FSD since they let in the 98 scores and I think it has improved in some ways but in others, actually taken a step back. I used to watch Chris's videos before I had FSD and thought it looked "close to ready". Actually driving with it is a very different experience and I agree it feels a long way from ready. I live in Tucson, which has fairly heavy traffic that is, for reasons unknown, made up of a high percentage of very aggressive and very poor drivers. Unless I'm driving at a very low traffic time, it is almost impossible to use FSD. My wife is so fed up with it that she no longer lets me engage it when she is in the car.

@@MacGuyver85 I'm guessing you don't use fsd beta. there is a reason Elon has been saying tesla will reach level 5 for the last 4 years straight to no avail and it's not because of regulations or regulators. it's because they are no where close to it. I would love to see a switch flipped and it be close to public release but I'm not holding my breath. meanwhile they raised the price of fsd for he first time without any new functionality. $12k for auto lane change functionality and stop sign/red light functionality is a rip off. self park doesn't work unless it's perfectly flat and summon at this point is a gimmick. I paid $5k for fsd and at this point wish I had not. paying $12k+ at this point is a joke. my car is 3 years old and I have to think fsd will not work as fsd in it's lifetime. paying money for something that doesn't work is linear.

  • @catbert7

    @catbert7

    2 жыл бұрын

There were no acceleration differences, from what was depicted in this video, if you compare. That was cognitive bias. That foible at the construction zone was one of only 3 minor differences in behavior, that were not due to different circumstances. This was more a lesson in psychology than anything ;p It showed how the cars can react to the same stimuli almost identically and yet the drivers still think it's behaving differently.

Now for the numbers. The trip had 5 disengagements and 3 interventions. On disengagements 1 was accidental cause by rough road as I gave steering input. Another was how close the car was to a road barricade in construction area and I steered closer to other lane for my sanity. 2 of the interventions was to speed it up at intersection where it was being hesitant. The last intervention was on the highway to speed up a pass

I think it would also be helpful to switch who is the leading car. Your car gets to react with someone in front using the same route as opposed to him paving the way. I wonder if his would have been slightly smoother as the trail car. I'm thinking primarily intersections and spots where you are directly behind him.

Cool video guys! I think it'd be cool if FSD wouldn't disengage when you override with the wheel. So you could nudge the car in some scenarios and the car could use that information and share it with the others somehow. Volkswagen Lane Assist let's you steer while it's engaged and let's you set an offset to the road center that way. This is particularly useful in Germany where you have to drive on the sides in an traffic jam to let ambulances pass by.

I’m writing this before watching the video: it’s an excellent idea to check one against another to see if the behaviour differs. (After watching) Very interesting at several levels. We shouldn’t be too critical when beta has limited views of signs etc - at least the ones that a driver new to the area might miss. The most interesting bit was the way the first car didn’t want to move back after the construction cones and the second did it. Needs a bit more pre-drive planning perhaps as to how to proceed when second car has to stop at the lights or takes a different route. Is it possible to have phones connected and audible on video? Good job!

Thanks Matt! This was fun and very informative. A few spots where the cars took the turns almost exactly the same. First time I've seen a no turn on red light like that.. I would say in an ideal world, merge lanes as late as possible is best to keep more lanes drive able, and I think the squirrel would have made it, but good to be extra sure, (however if it came to an unsafe disengagement, would rather just hit the squirrel bc God will make more squirrels, not more of you). But seriously, thanks to you both, great editing and thoughtful review, thanks for showing the world you guys. Can't wait for a FSD in more cars and eventually no steering wheels/pedals (and eventually safety to the point no more seat belts and then no more air bags to follow). ❤️ 🧡

Sounds like you car has similar issue I have, where it appears to never have Cell connection. Putting an address almost always takes minimum of 3 attempts anywhere in Nashville TN. Areas around Metro Area typically works 1st attempt.

This one too kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIuMybWpla7gj84.html it's actually $12,000 so if you do have $10k locked in worth considering keeping it. But probably still not worth it.

The car’s navigation freezing and losing its network connection looks a lot like the problems my own car was having every time it preconditioned the batteries for supercharging. It’s now in the service shop waiting for a replacement computer.

We need a feature to share destination and track another tesla, which would be great for family trips using two tesla.

13:45 and 13:54 good to a vehicle happened to cross both your paths and see actually the same bad thing, the vehicle made the turn regardless the on coming traffic. Hope this is a fix in 10.12.

When I had FSD beta I had connectivity problems and my 3g/4g chip was broken you might want to schedule a service appointment and see if it fixes it

Even if the situation seems to be the same it hardly ever is due to the other traffic participants, to which FSD Beta seems to pay a different attention than human drivers do. This also might be due to depth perception on which FSD still has to improve under certain conditions. For instance, see the cone placement at 24:10 on the FSD screen compared to what actually is on the road. Interestingly, the same spot with less oncoming cars didn't result in the same confusion.

Nice test. Having a lead car ahead of you makes a difference as far I can tell. IMHO FSD uses info from a lead car to help it evaluate the drivable space. So in some of those cases where Chris was near Matt, Chris's car appeared to drive more smoothly. I suggest that in the next test you do pick a loop route . Then take two trips around the loop, one with Chris's car in the lead and the other with Matt's. Also pick a portion of the loop where the trailing car pauses so the lead car can advance by itself followed by the trailing car. Hopefully another car doesn't show up to become the lead car to mess up the test. If the cars end up behaving differently then you can probably conclude some A/B testing is going on with the FSD releases.

I really want to do something like this with a beta tester near me. I wish we could run this type of thing together Chris, Model 3 Model Y two seasoned testers. If you find yourself in SoCal that would be an awesome opportunity. Maybe put your Y through the Friars Challenge haha.

It is interesting to see your different expectations coming into the same situations in some cases. These expectations would be more aligned if the locations were naive for both of you, I think. Also I think I can spot differences in your own driving style affecting your expectations. What I’m looking forward to is when you no longer have to make mental excuses for the AI.

Very interesting. Approaching the cones at 24.10, Chris's Tesla sees a phantom cone that causes it to struggle. Could that be dirt on the camera? And if so could dirt on either cars' cameras be causing some of the other variations?

As for 4 way stops, i see the back of the other guy’s stop sign. I assume the Beta sees the limit lines. Maybe the octagonal shape of the other stop sign.
