Tesla DIY Motor Control Board Install

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video shows the install of the Damien McGuire Open Inverter DIY Tesla Motor control board. I run this board in my 2007 Mustang GT Sport Motor build and it works great. This new board that I'm installing is going in my AWD single motor setup. The board is under $500 and will control all the large Tesla drive units. There is also a board for the small Tesla units. No Model 3 boards at this time.

    Great stuff Sir! What’s your thoughts on using Tesla drive unit with 80kW battery pack fit in to the 50ft cutter (sailboat) Where shall I expect biggest difficulties except batteries? I am an sailor and electrician ;)

    I think your biggest difficulty will be attaching the motor to your drive unit.

    I trust this is a different motor. Is this for your all wheel drive?

    Yes this is a standard Model S motor, about 450 horse depending on battery pack used. I have it split totally in halve to work on it easier. I'll be running a coupler right off the motors output shaft to attach a 3.07 ratio Dodge charger differential which will then run for and aft to to a forward 3.07 diff for FWD and a rear 3.07 diff for the rear wheel drive. At this point it looks like I'll be running a 4.5" racing clutch to disengage the rear drive so I can slide around hairpin turns using the rear brakes and having the front wheels pull me around the corners then let the lever loose to scream AWD out of the corner until the next turn. Lots of engineering. Should take 3 or 4 months to finish.

    We have great options now for EV builds! Is that motor control board ready from the "factory". Did you have to fiddle a lot with its options in software to make it work?

    Actually not much. If you download already set parameters that people have successfully used then you end up with a very basic tune that works well.

  • @Roadstercycle

    @Roadstercycle

    I changed the board to be able to control the motor and inverter. With this board I can run the motor without spending $3500 for the controller that EV West and others are selling to control the stock board. This board is under $500 so the $3000 savings goes into other areas like batteries.

    @@schade12 You do not need a controller per say to control the motor now. You just have to set your parameters on the new controller board with a laptop and your done. Then you use a forward, reverse and cruise control push button and that's it.
