You incorrectly stated that the highest volume of lithium production is in South America. Currently, the highest volume of lithium production is controlled by China and comes from the Congo.

No one else is famously taking on companies and changing the lifestyles of what has been engraved in peoples minds and life for a century. No one else would be talking about electric cars even in 2023 if it wasn’t for Elon. The idea would have died all over again in the machines that crushed all of the GM EV-1s, much less solar and battery power and technology. And what other “ car “ company has ever had a thought to invest and develop actual robots. If he doesn’t believe it can be done or is not worth doing, he won’t do it. But if he believes it can be done and will “Revolutionize ‘ something , he will do it and he will not stop until it is done. I’ve always said Elon doesn’t do anything for recognition , only results.

Indeed! This is a great thing. It's what we need, to be more energy independent, and it really goes with the Tesla model of doing everything themselves. Do you want to know something that is incredibly irritating? So there is a way to store hydrogen gas in solid lithium alloy tanks, inside the metal itself, where it becomes non-flammable, and impossible to explode, and with a tank the size of a stock fuel tank in a car, they can provide 400 miles range of hydrogen gas, without any of the dangers of a hollow tank at very high pressure. So there is a way to store hydrogen safely. But they won't allow the public to produce the lithium alloy needed to do it, due to "national security" patents. @@Nill757 As far as I can tell there are many mining operations, including the massive digging and drilling for oil, that are far worse than lithium mining. I think the public knows about lithium because the media hates Elon and wants to constantly point out how bad his plans are. Drive past a concrete yard and they have destroyed the land completely to dig up rocks to make concrete. Or digging for oil, which completely destroys the ground water if there is an accidental spill. How many accidental oil spills? Lithium is temporary I think. They will find an easier way to make batteries within 3 years.

I worked at Capital Cement Company in the late 60's early 70's as a control room operater. Capital was converted from a lithium processing plant. At the time, some of the processes and equipment were the same between the old lithium plant and the cement plant. Notibly the grinding mill and cement kiln. They shut the lithium plant down because the government had all the lithium it needed for years to come.

Infinite Battery

IMO Elon Musk is the most important person on earth right now. If not for him China would be leading the EV race, USA would have to Pay Russia for sending people into space, Twitter would still be cencoring anyone they dident agree with, and I wouldent have made a ton of money on Tesla stocks 😂

@@incognitotorpedo42 I think in this regard their leaders were visionary enough. And they were not that much cemented in ICE cars. They were not so good in them yet, so vision of winning in EVs seemed like a good bet. I always say, we call ourselves homo sapiens because sapiens means wisdom, yet majority of people ain't wise, and even an entire subgroup of wise and smart car engineers isn't smart in their sum. They can be smart each individually, but the total cancels each out and the global car industry "magicians" fell asleep on their laurels.

I hope this all becomes more common away from China and they do a good job at it. I would not get too focused on Li in and of itself, as so many combinations of materials are being investigated/tested etc and you might end up with a stranded asset with a single new battery type being released.

Not many people don’t seem to be talking about that there are batteries that won’t need lithium but mainly salt,water and a few other materials plus the solid state battery.

@@dalebruno5201 but as far as a cost saving matter for stationary batteries like the powerwall lfp is a great choice because it will not have all the stresses that an ev car battery would have like thermal issues and charging speeds I think thier will always be a use for lfp batteries

@@justinjones6810 As of now LFP batteries are a no brainer but the SOLID STATE BATTERY I think will be the better choice but sometimes we don’t always use the best choice for the people the perfect industry that proves that is the medical industry a small company could have a unbelievable product but if the big boys don’t buyout the company they will do everything in its power to crush that product one product would be the MRI machines there are way better products out there but they paid so much for the big clunky MRI machines they have they don’t want to get into something that’s so much better health wise and is soooo much cheaper to use.

I am always impressed with the decisions that Tesla takes, especially Mr. Musk.

Actually the Model 2 (next generation platform), since it will outsell all current models combined, will be produced in all the expandable and expansion locations. Want to bet how Tesla will start Model 2 and Giga-Mexico? My guess: 1) Start building G-MX 2) Start G-TX expansion for M2 production 3) Start producing M3 & MY at G-MX (get staff trained and up to Tesla speed) 4) Start M2 production at G-TX (work bugs out with top staff, Elon, suppliers, engineers) 5) Start M2 production at G-MX (close to G-TX for aid) 6) Start M2 production at expanded G-Berlin & expanded G-Shanghai.

Ford built a refinery for steel in its Dearborn Michigan plant. Steel was a limiting factor when they did it.

I hope tesla will research into sodium ion. It doesn't have as much gains but have good potential. Lithium is not very abundant so sodium is something that could be a good alternative.

Lithium is fine, it's one of the most abundant minerals on earth. We just have to actually mine it ourselves. Really though, the main reason we haven't been is a lack of use for it. China was the one doing the refining because they're the ones making the smartphones. Now that there's a much bigger use for lithium, expect production to ramp up everywhere.

That being said, he started to buy stocks in mining industry, now he is investing in that industry and make the process “in house”. So, this guy, with all the statesment his making, tends to put the words where his mouth is. Interresting times to live. :)

2 words: Training Tile. The MOST important "chip". For all the others, Tesla's advantage is "Agile". When there were shortages Tesla "simply" changed to available items from other suppliers. There's no critical need for Tesla to make everything.

Do you know if they're still using manual labor in the Congo to mine for Cobalt? I heard that a very large lithium deposit was found in S/E Oregon. The irony there is Oregon is very green but they don't want any mining in their own backyard.

The Congo is an extremely poor country and yes 20% of the cobalt from the Congo is mined by child labor by desperate people. If you’re really concerned about those children, contribute to a charity doing work there or better still go as a missionary.

If you're talking about those sodium batteries they're far from mass production. Even just taking a very similar lithium chemistry to what is already used and putting it into a bigger container (4680) takes several years to figure out and produce.

If you're talking about the cells CATL is developing, they are/were in the validation stages of those cells, and if that's true they won't be mass producing them for at bare minimum another year or two. Even still, they are expected to be around 160Wh/kg, which is 30% less energy dense than most lithium chemistries, so it's not going to replace them anytime soon as they are much heavier. Also, they were mainly developed because lithium prices were shooting way up but as of very recently, the price per ton in china at least has halved (to about 280k yuan from 600k). Remember that urban, population dense cities have an upper hand when it comes to adopting EVs because they don't need as much range. That gives them the luxury of making less efficient, but cheaper packs for small vehicles.

6:01 "The Earth is made up mostly of iron" I'm not sure where you got these numbers, but they don't seem to be anywhere close to matching any numbers I see. The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics lists the following: Oxygen: 46.1% Silicon: 28.2% Aluminum: 8.23% Iron: 5.63% Magnesium is farther down in 7th place: 2.33% Overall, it does make little difference as 5.63% is still a massive amount, but I'm just curious what your sources are.

Very likely even if sodium wins a majority of the battery business lithium needs will increase.

I’m from corpus. They’ll be right at home here. We already have infrastructure in place to prevent chemical accidents (our water system doesn’t allow back flow) and DOW chemical and a number of other refineries already exist here

Hi Mr "Tesla Space". Is there any way, do you think, I could get a message to Elon about an idea I have for a massive lithium and almost limitless cheap power combination. It needs someone with vision and rather deep pockets. No cut in it for me, I just want to see this opportunity realised, and the transition to an electrified planet sped up. I'm a physics teacher and opine that our planet has a dire future if we don't electrify quick-fast.

The car built at the new Mexico plant will be the modern equivalent of the VW Beetle. Building it in Mexico is perfect for that reason alone. This will be a great benefit to Mexico. This will also be a great benefit to the USA. We need our neightbors to be successful, so we can both have more peaceful lives.

No other auto company will be able to catch up to Tesla when it comes to EVs. They're got an INSANE head start that will be near impossible to exceed. Rivians are charging at superchargers now, and now they're about to be refining their own lithium? Yeah, good luck to any other automaker, because they need it.

the real question is how many tesla cars or batteries can be served by the rafinery.

Tesla and American battery technology company both have unique propriety processes that are extremely clean Not to mention their clay stone extraction processes are very clean and extract lithium from a rock no one ever had a use for

The US environmental laws have been highly restrictive of new metal mines for decades, for good reason. Now that Tesla says it needs new lithium that all doesn’t matter? The US once had exactly one lithium mine in Nevada. It’s been there since 1968. There have been dozens of proposals over the years to get more US mines and today … there is still only one. Among other reasons, mines for lithium deposits use vast amounts of water, in an arid climate. So before being so sure about saving the planet, please don’t wreck it.

Obvious idea , but I prefer internet logistic and energy internet over colonization , I love aereospace and works on that but to me awareness is essential for put a limit to compassion .
