    Im not a mechanical engineer but...If im not mistaken, at 14 seconds into the video, it looks like the little red arm is cutting the tabs that fold over the top of the jellyroll as it is being formed on the fly. Then possibly cauterize 18 seconds in to the video. Amazingly fast. Would like to know what you think. Is this their secret sauce?

  • @flienky

    @flienky

    No it isn't a continuous running machine. For each cell, the winding process stops and begins with a new cell. It is not a non stop process.

  • @edrayton

    @edrayton

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@flienky I agree. The winding process stops and begins with each cell. This is obvious. For tabbed batteries the winding of each jellyroll must stop so the tabs can be welded on, for each cell. 4680s are tabless. As we can see in this video, the winding process for each individual cell's jellyroll is continuous ands does not stop to be welded like a tabbed battery. This is a huge time saver in the manufacturing process. The secret sauce, not be obvious in this video and not in the patent, is how they cut/fold the cathode/anodes in production.

    If the standard Model Y is using 4680s then I'm super confused. According to the EPA it only gets 123 MPGe. That's only one MPGe better than the 2170 Model Y 🤔

    @@damilareowosangba7864 You don't understand my question. I'm not asking why does it have less range, I am asking why is it only one MPGe more efficient? I'm talking about how many miles per kilowatt hour it gets. The 2170 Model Y gets 122 mpge and the new 4680 model Y only gets 123 mpge.

    They are using less energy dense LFP chemistry so the weight savings are lost to the heavier batteries. However LFP batteries have so many other advantages.

    Curious what capacity the first run of Model Y will get and what the relative weight savings will end up being. Tesla often flatters to disappoint. Their $35k sedan is $48k now with maybe $500 worth of added range from cells. Noone asked for a sedan. Many plead for hatchback and of course wagon. Tesla makes what they want you to get in debt for, don't care about consumers who discern. Flashes of greatness but with such budgets, underwhelming. Still only 4 cars on sale. Semi and Roadster were shown long ago. 2170 hyped but already outdated and largely replaced by better cheaper third party cells. Never even put in Model S and X.
