    I remember hearing this song on the school bus radio in the 60's, my friends and I would sing along with it and it always seemed to play at the same time every morning. I always loved the song and it's still a favorite.

    the idea that you even KNOW who Dick Clark was shows how intelligent you are compared to other reactors when they see him. That warms my heart. Yes, everyone though it was Elvis singing when the record came out. Elvis did a versions on an album 2 years before but it didn't have full backup vocals and instrumentation, was never released as a single. it was done ins a hurry. In 1964, rural Oklahoma born William Nathan “Bill” Stafford billed himself as Terry Stafford and took “Suspicion” to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was no small accomplishment, as his was the first single to break a lock on the Top five spots at the time, all held by the Beatles. Elvis never did THAT! I was 8 years old at the time.

    Hi! Terry Stafford was one of many Elvis impersonators - not in looks but vocally he sounds very much like Elvis. A lot of records were sold based on this, I believe. Tysheen, I just heard you say how much he sounds like Elvis. Yes!

  • @ronaldreddish2264

    @ronaldreddish2264

    He was not an impersonator; he just happened to sound similar. He wrote many of his own songs for himself and others. He had a totally different style and personality. He was not flashy or flamboyant by nature. Laid back in manner and dress. An imitator takes on the dress, manner and persona of the person imitated. Elvis also was not a writer of music. Terry Stafford was Terry Stafford; he imitated no one.

    Hi! yes, you are correct. I used the wrong word. I apologize to Mr. Stafford. But can I say that there were a number of singers at that time who sounded remarkably like Elvis...many people thought they WERE Elvis, in fact. Could this not have been even a tiny influence at the subconscious level by the record producers? Just a thought.

The river turned round the corner at a sharp 90 degree angle and I got tossed overboard by the Jesus freaks and the Hell's Angels made the Doobie Brothers "Jesus is just alright by me (Please don't play misty for me Robert Conrad)" their favourite music. The production on this song is so goddamned weird, it doesn't sound like any other song that came out at the time, I don't think. It's midway between torch song and rockabilly. There's no discernible normal rhythm guitar or lead guitar on it. You can't even tell what's horns and what's guitar going on in the background, and everything sounds like it's almost reverbed in another room or a cavern or I dunno what. The drummer sounds like he's using brushes but I'm not even sure. It's just a song from Mars! Of course Elvis did it too and his version is also fantastic, of course. But Stafford's voice just slays it. Also see Robert Gordon's various versions of this, he kills it too. I'd also love to know what type of mic they used to record Stafford's vocals.

    With respect, you have watched the performance above in this old video when Terry was just a kid-I see and hear no "deliberate" anything but just his natural great voice with nothing forced-it is merely a coincidence that he sounded quite like Elvis but it is certainly not identical and I like the overall sound of his version bettter than the Elvis version. If there was any copyright violation/no permission from Elvis or his writers or no licence granted to Terry and his people then we surely would have heard of some complaint and claim from Elvis if he wanted to pursue same. Either there was no copyright with Elvis or he chose not to pusue a claim as he knew Terry had the more popular version and did not want to hurt the kid on his first go round. In other words, Elvis by 1964 was rich and had had lots and lots of hit records and likely just decided to give Terry a break and not make a stink about Terry's cover version.

    @@resipsaloquitur1857 I disagree totally, I find it unlikely that he would sound so very similar to Elvis at a time when Elvis was in his prime without intending to. Also, Elvis would hardly be a likely candidate to sue someone for similarity of performance since he routinely sang other peoples' work without getting permission, such as Carl Perkins' song "Blue Suede Shoes" and the Stoller/Lieber song "Hound Dog." Furthermore, since Elvis recorded it first (1962), imitation is not at all unlikely.

    @@brandonflorida1092 Brandon, we will have to agree to disagree-"totally" and you do not seem to get my point. Where in his performance do you hear this young guy straining his voice or sounding in any way unnatural or coached in order to imitate anybody? All I hear and see is his natural voice so what are you suggesting-that he took lessons to change his voice somehow to sound as you hear it in the video above-just so it might sound like Elvis to some listeners? What would you suggest he should have done...sit home and not record any songs and not even try to pursue a singing career at all simply because he has a natural voice like Elvis without even needing to alter a thing to sound like him although he is not 100% identical? Your comments about Elvis singing other's songs without their permisssion is interesting-I knew about the Carl Perkins song but have no idea whether he talked to Carl first and got his OK but if he did not, why are you so upset then that Stafford may not have done so re. this Elvis song and Terry or his people may well have talked to Elvis to get his clearance-you and I just do not know. As you say, if he had done so, Elvis could hardly object or are you suggesting that Elvis say to Terry that his voice was too close to his and then try to stop him on that basis??...and when that simply happened to be Terry's natural voice!? Surely not so I see no crime here at all and nothing to be excited about. Even IF Terry changed his voice somehow to make it sound more like Elvis, you also miss the point that imitation is the height of flattery!

    @@resipsaloquitur1857 Boy, that doesn't sound like agreeing to disagree to me. Your argument is filled with logical errors. You say, "...o you hear this young guy straining his voice or sounding in any way unnatural or coached in order to imitate...." If it required any significant effort to "do" Elvis, surely he would have worked out the kinks before he recorded. You say, "I knew about the Carl Perkins song but have no idea whether he talked to Carl first and got his OK but if he did not, why are you so upset then that Stafford may not have done so....Surely not so I see no crime here at all...." I never said that I was upset or considered it a crime. I just thought it was sort of a tribute. You say, "...you also miss the point that imitation is the height of flattery!" Where do you get that I missed that. That's what I've thought for decades that Stafford was doing. Since Elvis had recently recorded the same song, it's not unusual that Stafford would have done a bit of an imitation.

    Oh please! While some back then went out of their way to imitate Elvis, this young man was simply singing with his great natural low voice which just sounded a little bit like Elvis and btw, although Elvis recorded this song first, some say it was not released until after this song hit big and the Elvis version did not even get into the top 100. Terry Stafford should have had more hits but fame can be a lonely and unpredictable pursuit.

    Wrong...While I normally love the songs of Elvis, Terry just happened in this case to record a much superior and catchier version than the original Elvis version as indicated by the record sales for Terry. We can presume copyright permission was obtained from Elvis or we would have heard of a dispute/copyright claim/lawsuit by Elvis. His version did not even crack the top 100.

    @@elvistcb3521 Can you not form a full sentence? Your crude rude one word non-reply to my reply to you above speaks volumes about your ignorance. I guess you are an Elvis worshipper and hate it when anyone else has success with a song he recorded first but as to which version sounds better, everyone is entitled to their opinion. There are several cover versions of the original 1962 song Suspicion recorded by Elvis in 1962 but Stafford's 1964 cover version was the most successful one selling over one million records and reaching #3 on the U.S. charts and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. As I indicated above, I am a big Elvis fan like you must be but the U.S. record sales speak for themselves. I can find no evidence of Elvis or his people or the two original songwriters Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman complaining to Stafford or pursuing any copyright claim vs. Stafford or any of the later cover version singers. See Wikipedia link below re. the song and it includes a list of several cover versions in addition to Stafford's. Robert Gordon also recorded the song in 1988. No need to reply but if you do, try to be civil as per KZread standards and if you are not, I will be happy to mute you and/or report you to KZread.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspicion_(Terry_Stafford_song)
