Terry Kath and Chicago at the Arie Crown Theater 11-72

Музыка

The November, 1972 concert from the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago. A stellar version of "Dialogue Parts 1 and 2" and a rare video of the band performing the instrumental gem, "Devil's Sweet".

How could anyone watch this and not understand - the 70's was the greatest musical decade in history? Band after band, artist after artist, song after song. These guys were the top!

Yes if you’re talking strictly about rock ‘n’ roll. But if you look at jazz, America’s true art form, The 70s were barren compared to the 50s and 60s.

Don’t underestimate the talents of Robert Lamm, Terry’s best friend and Co-author on many of their songs. He suffered deep depression and left band for 2 years after Terry passed away. Without both Terry & Robert, the band lost direction with Peter taking band into disco inspired bubblegum pop band 🤮

They wernt the same before Terry left, they had serious drug problems and they were seriously burnt out. They had made six fantastic albums and double albums but nobody could last that long at that much of a creative level. Blaming Peter for where they went is just ignoring they were already heading that way.

This is simply a fact. Kath was the soul of Chicago and their music was sublime until he died. Once Foster entered the picture they had some very good ballads, and Chi 17 was excellent, but they could never replace the genius of Kath.

@dearing79 I agree man. You know, all I've heard in the last 30/35 years or so was how conceited and hard to work with Peter Cetera was. I've never had the pleasure of meeting him or any of Chicago for that matter, but like the old saying goes, there are 2 sides to every story, so who knows? What I do know is that the whole band has given me a lot of happy times for many years, the whole band, not just Peter, and I'm thankful that we have had this band so long. As far as the stories about Peter, maybe they are true, but who knows? If I could sing AND play like him, I'm fairly sure I would be a little full of myself, haha. Anyway, it is all just my opinion and I just felt like expressing it. Peace to all and especially to my fellow Chicago fans!

The talent on this stage is rarely seen outside of a classic orchestra or pure jazz ensemble. 3 absolutely brilliant lead singers, who were all genius with their respective instruments. Add a drummer who has to be one of the all time greats, and add an off the chain horn section. Add to that their songwriting and arranging and you get Chicago. One of the 20th century’s greatest bands. Kath remains a freak of nature…that voice, guitar playing and songwriting …to this day these guys are required listening on a regular basis for me. But I could care less for everything they recorded after the loss of Kath

Danny is such a good drummer. A Jazz guy all the way. He adapted so nicely to the popular idiom. Pound for pound, the best rock band America ever produced. Dialogue is such a tour de force. Long live Terry Kath.

I was at this concert! Sort of. My friends and I sneaked in. At this time the Aerie Crown Theater was brand new and the adjacent rooms were still under construction. We got wind of a way to get in from this one room that had a big ladder going all the way up to the ceiling, and through a hole in the tiles. Up in the ceiling there were catwalks going this way and that, so we just followed our ears to get closer to the stage. As I recall, we saw the band from the same vantage point as the lighting booth. Great band, great show. Great adventure!

I recently went to a higher end hair salon on a recommendation and showed the girl a bunch of pictures of rock stars from the 70s such as Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Randy Meisner and Terry Kath and I told the girl I want a 70s shag cut that resembles these guys. She said she could do it and I said go ahead and she did it. I love the music and the styles of this decade. There will never be anything else like this. Thank you so much.

Was in 3rd grade when this came out. Away at weeks of summer camp, the counselors who were in their mid-teens enjoyed teaching littler kids to "dance" and they were always looking out for budding crushes among the kids. One of the counselors knew I had the hots for Hali, another 8 year old who looked like Shirley Temple. That counselor became matchmaker and put the '75 Greatest Hits album on the turntable in the mess hall where we were having a dance. She turned the lights down and grabbed me and Hali and showed us how to hold one another. Beginnings, Color My World and Searching make me shiver every single time, even 49 years later. We ended up sitting on a boulder under the moonlight, holding hands. Does it get any better than that?

Computers made things sterile if they are over used and you see that alot music was always a product but record companies saw the assembly line ability of computers and how they could just crank out music with ease and the influence of hip hop and samples It lost alot of it's emotion. It tends to be more focused on the artists rather than musical abilities. There are some good bands around but innovation like alot of the bands of the 60s 70s 80's and even 90's just is not there. Live instruments without all the computer assistance just gives that feeling and randomness digital music lacks. But hopefully there is a kid watching this video or other talented bands and it inspires them to not only learn the songs but create a new sound. You never knowm my nine year old likes they overproduced stuff but just is in awe of this video he says you can feel the music or when he watches jimi hendrix or even Elton John he is amazed that they can sing without aurotune. Who knows maybe it will inspire hm one day. At least he can appreciate good music. He also loves classical and jazz. So if my kiddo can appreciate the music of the past other kids will too.

When I was in college, we had Chicago performing at least once a year. We listened to their albums incessantly. Terry Kath was one of the greatest guitarists of the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s. He remains one of the best guitarists ever thanks to these videos. The horn section was always esoteric. How can I explain what it’s like to hear real music by real musicians and free of crutches such as auto tune.
