Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun | Reaction/Review!

Coming into this, I had an inkling that this may sound familiar, and that inkling was correct. This was a mega hit for Terry, and it's pretty much the only track he's known for. Now I'm curious to listen to his other stuff. Anyway, he took an old song and absolutely made it his own. From the words to the slow tempo to his soft voice, it's just hauntingly beautiful. Also, it's funny that this video is blocked in Canada since I live in Canada. Apologies to the 3% of my audience that is Canadian and can't see this.
Thanks for watching!

It’s has to be hard to die when everything around you is so full of life and joy, birds singing, it’s sunny and you heard kids playing.. I guess everyone expect to die on a gloomy, rainy day

This song, more than any other, takes me right back to being a child, village life, friends and playing outside, I was just moving up to big school. Still love the song to this day.

This song inspired a version that was sung in my UK primary school playground in the 70s: "We had joy, we had fun, flicking bogeys at the sun But the sun was too hot, so it covered it in snot"

One of Kurt Cobain's favorite songs growing up! I grew up with a Kingston Trio album where they covered this tune and I always loved it.

Inspired many a football song such as "We had joy, we had fun, We had West Ham on the run, But the fun did not last, 'cause the west Ham ran too fast"

If you want to hear Jacques Brel, I suggest Ne Me Quitte Pas or Amsterdam (the live version). Brel is huge in French speaking countries.

According to a subscriber on Quora the Jacques Brel version of the song is about the protagonist killing himself to spite a cheating lover, an even darker meaning than Terry Jacks version.

The lyrics of Le Moribond, the original by Brel, say nothing about the protagonist 'killing himself'. He knows he is bound to die, so he says goodbye to his cheating wife, and to her lover, who he kind of forgives and insults at the same time. And then he says goodbye to the local priest, with who he had disagreements, but in the end 'on cherchait le meme port' (we searched for the same harbour).

I read up on this after the video. The original is even more tragic than Terry's.
