When a teacher publicly humiliates and makes fun of a student, it’s ‘okay’, but then whenever a student talks back and defends themselves, they’re considered disruptive and disrespectful? The education system and the people who run it are messed up.

Some teachers. I am a teacher and I wouldn't dream of doing any of this, neither would any of my colleagues. Also, with the food drive, the teacher should know what the backgrounds of the children in the school are. For example, I have quite affluent kids but most are from more deprived areas. Therefore we wouldn't get much but know why.

Truuue, I think I was in fourth grade and my class was in the library, we had partners. My partner was my friend who was bad with English The assignment was about writing a story and picking pictures and a cover for it etc. She was shy and barely spoke through the whole thing, but I DID ask her "is this ok.. How about this?" and she would nod, I'd ask her what to type and everything when it came her time. The class came to an end and the substitute teacher we had asked my partner "did you get a chance to write?" Keep in mind she didn't know English very well and was probably confused She answered "mm.. No" I heard her say this and when the teacher walked away I FREAKED OUT, I thought I would get a bad grade or the teacher would think less of me if she thought I was selfish! I did everything in my power to get my partner to tell the teacher "actually, yeah I did write" I think she did end up telling the teacher that. But apparently the teacher heard me asking my partner that and YELLED at me in front of the entire class in the hallway for MANIPULATING A STUDENT... I walked away with my face red and almost about to cry Sorry this is so long, I wanted to get point across XD

The whole point of giving to a charity is that you're doing it if you can out of the kindness of your heart, and not because it's mandatory. Humiliating someone for not giving could possibly make them not want to donate because they could connect the trauma with charity/giving. At least, that's how it would work for me, idk about others.

Especially that usually or people are poor si why would they throw a few dollar, or they had a bad experience with charity(once when my mom was volunterring for a charity, they told her to put aside some toys, so that they keep them for their own action, not the one people have donated for), and sometimes they might be greedy. Technically humiliating someone to give to charity probably work, but only one time.

Only ever had one teacher I actively disliked. Chemistry teacher in high school, sophomore year. He gave us a sideshow and told us to do it. Then when my friends and I said we were confused, he said "bullshit" and walked away. I barely passed. The American school system is ranked #1 and #2 as the country with the best education system and competing with usually the U.K. For the top spot... Country with highest grades is between Korea and Japan who actually make their kids arrive only 30 minutes later than the U.S. students but have them get out a full hour and a half later and give less days off to their students. Before you talk bad and label the U.S. as a "catastrophe" you should really do the research behind the students themselves (who btw have shown signs to being lazier and lazier) as opposed to the teachers doing their job. There's bad teachers, but you're really wrong in your comment by saying the whole American School System is bad.

I actually wanted to share a story about an amazing teacher! It was grade 4, after winter the Holiday was over, my parents had told me and my sibling not long before that they had decided to split up, they still cared about each other just didn't think staying married was a good choice. Then, just a few days before school started we had to put my cat down because he was sick and we couldn't help him. So obviously I wasn't doing so well so in class I would zone out, doodle, not pay attention, and stuff more then usual and my teacher noticed it. One day she came and talked with me after class and I explained why I was acting that way, she ended up giving me a small bear stuffy to keep with me during class. I still have the bear to this day and it brings me so much comfort. :3

Back in 10th grade I tried to tell a teacher privately that I was gonna miss 2 consecutive classes and she lost her shit on me. The reason I was missing these classes was because my grandma had cancer and we didn't think she would make it to Thanksgiving so we were having a Thanksgiving on Halloween weekend and she lived half way across the country. When I shouted this back at the teacher she went dead silent and so did the class.

I had a bullying issue in my classroom. It was a big problem because we all had the same classes together (this was in my middle school at the time during covid) I was the main target. I was bullied in every class. I would openly cry about it. All of my teachers (except one) just ignored it. They let it happen. I loved my chemistry teacher. She would always check on me and make sure I was okay. My other teachers didn't do that. I was also VERY sensitive so that didn't help. Here's an example of something a teacher said to me, "Why are you crying? This is not the space or time to be doing that. Wipe your tears and continue class." She purposefully embarrassed me in class, and didn't do anything about the bullies. I was very depressed after that. The education system is unfair.

So when we went jogging in the forest, he would take a very complicated route and when it was time to turn back he would stop and say: „Now, you have to find the the way out and we will follow you.“ He‘d enjoy seeing me struggling to find the way back and when I finally managed to find the way out he would proceed to tell the hole class how much time we waisted because I didn‘t immediately find the way back. Such an a-hole! Luckily for me the hole class hated him, so I never got in any trouble with my classmates. Seriously, what an ass!

I remember I had a really bad science teacher when I started in a new school. She was really biased to certain students, mainly the ones that did well in her classes. So when they forgot their HW or a stationary, she’d be like, oh, it’s fine, just borrow one. But if an average student, like me, did any of the above, she’d either yell at us, or blatantly be exasperated at us. She didn’t bother hiding it. One time she was doing a science experiment in a lab, and I, a short kid, was at the very back and couldn’t see anything, and no-one was budging. She saw, and *yelled* at me, because NO ONE, WOULD MOVE. I’m pretty sure most kids didn’t like at all.

No one said anything then, my twin sis was in the library with my class so she said I wasn't then the teacher got her to stand up IN FRONT OF EVERYONE! and said again "is she having a tantrum!?!?" And remember we where like 9 and she's terrifying! Not to mention she's the VISE PRINCIPAL! so she basically force my sister to say yes she left and I was nearly passing out beacuse of hyperventilating I think some friends or a nice teacher came over to try help idk things where really blurry by then I don't know Was this a traumatic experience? idk it's definitely stuck with me that's for sure

I had two teachers who always picked me when I didn't know the answer to properly humiliate me in front of everyone else. I didn't even have my hand raised like so many others who knew. One teacher was really weird and wanted most of the girls in class on his lap while playing guitar. He offered me but I didn't want to because it was creepy. I was being teased for that because apparently I was the only one who thought it was weird for an adult male to want young student girls on their lap. The principal was strange too, he stole every student's shoes and hid them in a sack and then hid them away so most students couldn't get home.

My third grade teacher specifically targeted me for things. She would tell me to do things over and over, and then tell me to do the opposite, and stupid stuff like that. Example: One time we were cleaning out our desks, so I was taking things out, and she said I was doing it too slow, so I sped up and messed up a bit, then she told me to go slower, and she kept doing that until I just tipped my desk so all the books fell out, and I got sent to the office. Every other day I was in the hall crying all day because she would send me there. Another things, our school had a day in summer called "Spree Day" where you got to play little games outside with your class. In that year, there was a game I didn't like, so I went to a hill about 3 feet away and just sat there. I said I didn't want to keep playing the game, and she got really mad at me. I was able to sit out the games in 4th in 5th grade, but this year, she ended up getting me SUSPENDED for not wanting to play a game. That's stupid. Remember that it was 3rd grade and I was like 7.

As a teacher from Argentina I can relate to some stories but also can´t understand why is it so common in the US to humiliate or put students against each other instead of teaching them to cooperate and work together. It´s a very stressful but satisfying job, and MUCH easier when you have the students on your side.

The teacher I hated the most was my 10th-grade history teacher. I always did great in History routinely getting above a 100. So we had an end-of-the-year essay and she gave us all different events across the second world war such as Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, the Invasion of Poland, etc. Mine was Operation: Market Garden the failed allied attempt to end the war by the end of 1944. I wrote a detailed essay on it all including the politics behind it. I ended up getting a ZERO on it which brought my grade down to a 54 from a 98, it was a very important paper. Turns out she as an elderly British woman did not like me criticizing British General Montgomery who really screwed the pooch when it came to Market Garden. My friend showed it to his AP history teacher and said he would grade it a 98 if I handed it in to him. The principal told my teacher to fix the grade and apologize to me. She changed my grade correctly. Never apologized. I was changing schools after 10th-grade so I didn't care she didn't apologize.

Hello! I have a crazy story from last year! We were reading this poem with a question packet on the other side, and our teacher started reading it to us. Keep in mind that I didn't really like him. So, me being me, I quickly read the poem to myself while he was passing it out, and moved to the questions on the next page. Suddenly, he came over and grabbed my paper, ripped it in half without a word, and went back to reading the poem to the class. I was known for sketching in class, and so everyone asked me if I was sketching when I shouldn't have been! Worst teacher ever, don't want to see him again.

I was in elementary school and I realized I could join Volleyball, so I decided to not be in the academics team so I'd have time for the after school practices. I told the teacher in charge of it, and she said "Quitting academics for sports? Not good. Not good at all" and kind of shook her head disapprovingly. This woman was a kindergarten teacher who had yelled at my little sister for forgetting her lunchbox in the classroom. Then I guess I forgot to tell the teacher who ran my team, so when she called the team down, I explained the situation and she started guilt tripping me. Saying "Well you took a spot that someone else could have got" and asked when my practice was, I answered with the first day (it was an every week day practice, I had just misunderstood the question) she said "Well our practices aren't on that day, so"

Once I had a teacher who was a middle school teacher and basketball coach. During the time I had him as a teacher, I was having a rough time with another student and I told him about. He did nothing about and when I found out he didn't,I told my mom about. She went up to the school and called that teacher out right in front of all the class(it was 32 students) and he made a BIG mistake. He stood up for the student that was giving me trouble. My mom was so close to slapping him in front of 12-13 year olds. Turns out other students also had problems with him being a creep to the girls and mean to the kids that stood up for themselves so he got fired and had to leave. After he left I got revenge on that kid that was giving trouble.

I have had a LOT of terrible teachers over the years but there is one in particular that stands out for me that I had last year. I'll call him T. Now T at first, seemed like a teacher who was strict but fun to be around. Boy was I wrong because soon after, I had basically misunderstood everything he was teaching. He never even seemed to care about making sure we understood. Actually, that's just it. He never really taught us anything. I almost ended up failing his class all together due to a lack of knowledge of what to do in his class. He never once even bothered to help when he clearly saw students struggling. A couple of kids actually said they had dyslexia or couldn't understand the work but every time, he would either lie about someone else having the same struggles the students had or he would say "having dyslexia is no excuse for failing my class", he was also the type to say his class was "super easy" to do. I still go to that school currently, but I think he's the worst teacher I've ever had because of sheer ignorance. So, TL; DR, my high school teacher was a prick because of how little he cared for his students.

I have a few good stories to lighten the mood! Or really they are just small points about my school. I have ADHD and a very small portion of Autism that used to be called Asperger’s Syndrome. My teachers are pretty nice at the school I’m at, and whenever I take a vacation during school they give me work to do on my free time during the vacation. Everyone understands my problems(most of them, anyway). I am allowed an IEP, when some people used to, and i feel really bad. Also, there was this one time where I was at my original school, an elementary, where the principal and a lot of teachers didn’t fully understand my problems, so they put me in a “class” to “fix” me. It didn’t work, and the principal did not like me and didn’t understand me. I was moved to a different one, and I had a much better time and made actual friends( I didn’t have any at the old one). Sorry if this one was really long.

Had to stop by and watch this as a teacher myself.. honestly.. sometimes we fall into pit holes that make us "terrible teachers" by accident.. I had one very bright student ask me for help on a problem so many times.. she broke into tears with frustration and asked to go to another teacher for help.. I said yes, of course.. not realizing just how many times I dismissed her attempts to get my attention.. it wasn't that I was intending to be cruel.. I had 20 other students, easily not near as bright as her, and so I focused on helping them first.. I've started explaining at the beginning of the year each year, that if I skip over you, odds are that I'm not ignoring you, I just lowered your priority because I know how smart you are, and I'm probably focusing on students that I know struggle in the subject. So try to take it as a sign of respect. I also make exceptions for when I know you work in a group together. If helping you means helping several students, you're probably going to be one of my first stops. If you are known for letting people just copy off of you =P you might be one of my last stops.

I hate talking about school stories because doing so makes me pretty mad, but I kinda waited to tell this for a while. I remember when I was in 8th grade, we had a sub one day in social studies. I didn't really talk that much and I didn't like being called on. But she called on me, and I didn't know the answer to the question. She asked 3 more times before getting in my face and yelled "If your brain's so small that you can't even answer, how about you don't come to school no more!" I tried holding back my tears, but I couldn't hold them anymore and started crying in the next period. I told my mom, who told the principal, and they made sure when that teacher was subbing, I wouldn't be in that class

The teachers have the authority to stop the bullies but sometimes they just don't want to do it and act irresponsibly and say you're just overreacting or deal with your own problems or if they bully you everytime then something's definitely wrong with you.

I was spychologically bullied. Difficult to prove anything. I had the chance principal believed me, but she could do antrhing... furthermore, if she had stepped in, the bullying could have been worse (and srill difficult to prove). I was just once physically bullied, on my way to school (not even in the school). The principal called the student, who admitted was he has done, and he wad punished. Yeah, my school was deadly serious about the "we're responsible of our students from the time they leave home to come to school, to the time they come home after school".

The teachers I had before I graduated one told me during an asthma attack that I'm in control of my breathing and that I didn't need my inhaler. The other pulled me aside after school and lectured me about how coming to school was important (I was in hospital and was homebound)

My spanish teacher in 7th grade had a rule that you could make up any homework you missed and get full credit, if you also wrote a short essay about a topic off a list. Thats not a bad rule and she was generally a good teacher, except for one time. I did my assignment and turned it in when it was due. Later, I got it back in these mailboxes we all had for returned and graded work. Then, about a week later she asked me if I had that paper. I took it out for her and she said, "okay, you have to write an essay to get credit since you turned it in late." I tried to debate it but she thought I was lying. She wasn't a bad teacher and I understand why she couldn't believe me, but I'm still pissed about it several years later.

I’m in a wheelchair and at school I need an aid, and the main thing they do is help lift me on the toilet, in 5th grade I had an aid and I loved her a lot, she was like a mom to me, 6 grade comes and I need a new aid, before the year started my family requested either a male aid so he can lift me better, or the aid I had before, she could lift me ok but needed help getting pants up, the handicap bathroom was in the special needs classroom so she would get help from the teacher or teacher assistant, but instead i got a new aid, she could not lift me at all so teacher and teacher assistant have to help, and what really made my mom mad was that if one of the was out they would call the custodian or someone to help, the aid was just that sorta fake nice, also sometimes I felt like she treated me like a child and just didn’t like her, also this will be important later but in the mornings I would ask her for a pencil and say something like “I need a pencil”. Any way one day I ask how she got the job, I say something like “hey if you don’t mind me asking how did you get the job because we requested a male aid or my aid from last year and you can’t lift me?” Apparently this offended her so much she told the principle but exaggerated, the next day during recess im called to the office, I’m scared but my aid is saying things like “I’m sure it’ll be fine. Maybe it’s a good thing.” Looking back now I think she new exactly what would happen, I’m called to a smaller room in the office, the principle is sitting at a desk, it’s just me and her, she yells at me for being ungrateful and rude, she yells something about how they could not hire my last aid because of the company she worked for, and my new aid was the only one who applied, and brings up how new aid said I’m too rude when asking for a pencil, she yells at me for a few minutes and I’m crying, when she’s done I tell new aid I’m sorry, I felt like crap, I tell my mom and she was furious, she ask the principle and she says she never yelled at me or said those things, basically my mom has it to where if I’m ever called back to the office that there has to be a witness. Later that year or the next I find out she was made my aid because the year prior she was with a kid she could lift, only problem was she was a five year old girl. She was also paid more than my last aid, and they fired old aid because she could not lift me. But I do feel bad for new aid and principle because new aids husband was in a motorcycle accident later in the year and she needed to be with him almost all the time, and Principle was forced to retire early because of a brain aneurysm (don’t worry she lived)

i hated my 6th grade teacher, he made my anxiety SO MUCH worse and when i pulled an all nighter on a school night i cried 2 times scared of even going to school, so i would always stay home, my mom made me to to therapy (i still go) and i cant do anything about it even if i rat him out, he wont get fired theres not enough teachers to just replace him so i just have to do nothing about it, he has made me cry over the smallest things like one time i had to read smt but i didnt do any work so i couldnt speak and i was crying while trying to hold back tears, after like 5 mins he sent me back to my seat and my "friends" started to try to comfurt me (they never care about how i feel until i cry) and i cant do anything, i was 11-12 i had to switch classes but that still didnt work so now i have to switch schools bc of him but its ok my friends from 4-5th grade will be there and im just happy that they will but im also scared, i'll alwas be scared of school. i was also abused 1-2grade by staff and principles / vice principles

I was sent to a creationist school for a year and a half in middle school because for various reasons it was difficult to find other options. Most of the teachers were alright (the bible teacher was surprisingly the best, he was really nice) but the science teacher I always thought was a pain. Every class she'd stop the lesson at some point and go on a 10-15 minute rant about how the concept of evolution and "evolutionists" were evil. Lots of stories about that teacher, she seemed shocked at the idea that other cultures even existed as at one point during her rants she went on a tangent about missionaries in remote areas of the world like Kyrgyzstan and said "There's people out there in the world who don't even KNOW that Jesus died for our sins!" The big story with her though didn't actually involve me, it involved my sister. While this teacher knew I wasn't a creationist, she couldn't really do anything about it, so she just kind of sullenly accepted my presence in her class as long as I kept quiet. However I did notice her watching me from a distance sometimes in the hallways, which I thought was weird but probably just stemming from a dislike of me she wasn't allowed to publicly voice. But it actually went way beyond anything I had every suspected, and I found it out when the school held parent-teacher conferences and my mom and sister went into all her classes to hear the reports (she also had my sister in a different time slot, since she was one grade lower than me). As it turns out, this teacher had been stalking every single student who took her classes on their social media platforms and been monitoring them in her free time to make sure they weren't saying or doing anything "sinful", with the plan to rat them out to their parents during these conferences should she find anything. However, being a bit of a luddite, I didn't actually have any social media accounts (still don't), certainly none that used my real name. So she couldn't get any data on me and that's why she was observing me from afar in the halls. She was hoping to catch something she could rat on me for. My sister, however, did have social media accounts using her real name. And some of her pen names on the internet were linked to her account. Her pen name on Tumblr was Erza Scarlet, like the character from Fairy Tail. So at this meeting, the prof handed my mom copies of hentai involving Erza Scarlet that she had looked up and PRINTED OUT, and went on a rant about how my sister was a sinful "harlot" and needed immediate religious correction in her life. My mom reported this to the principal, but nothing really happened. I think they just gave her a warning. We ended up moving house and schools a few months after.
