TerraFirmaCraft 1.18.2 Tutorials - Support Beams and Cave-Ins

Ойындар

Welcome to an in-depth tutorial about how support beams and cave-ins (or collapses) work in TerraFirmaCraft 1.18.2!
This video was using version 2.1.10 of TFC, so it is possible that future versions will work differently, in which i will leave a note in the comments and/or description.
Important Note: Recent versions of TFC made some small changes to support beams and cave-ins:
1) Support beams now support 1 additional block up and down, so the new range is 9x5x9 (was 9x3x9 previously)
2) There is now a 30% chance that if a collapse would occur, it instead only gives a warning, by playing a crumbling sound, and emitting particles on the block that would have collapsed.
0:00 - 3:34 Support Beams
3:34 - 11:27 Cave Ins

One thing to note is that if there is an intrusion of another rock type that runs through a cave, that section of cave roof will be raw whatever rock type the intrusion is made of, not the hardened version so collapses are easier to trigger in those spots, so i always put supports in when i find them.

Another really cool thing I noticed when I did a mistake and my entire mine feel on my head is that some rocks will change into some kind of sedimentary rocks when they fall

This is really great source of theory. Can you also make a tutorial for some best practices for mining underground? At the moment I would look for the center from the ground level, start a 2x1 hole while adding ladders, when I finally find the ore I build support beams around the ladder but placing the first pillars are always at risk of cave-in. Once I place the support beams I can mine around the same level pretty safely. But then if I want to mine the ore on my feet and below I risk collapsing everything around me. Should I start from the lowest level? Rely on some natural caves? Or am I missing something more fundamental?

mining straight down doesn't cause collapse as long as the roof above is supported, you can mine ores bellow. I suggest placing plank blocks first, then support beams on them this way you can mine even bellow the supports without collapse :) gl

@@MotivatedFrog I’ve figured out that the easiest way is to just chisel the unsupported stone before mining them. I do this until I can dig out a big enough area underneath to place support beams. I’ve also found out that it’s not safe to mine the ore on my feet unless I make sure I that I remove everything layer by layer. If I remove only the ores below me, some stone overhangs and when it gets some block update it would cause it to collapse taking my support columns along with it. Also, chiseling the stone underneath my support columns prevent them from getting knocked out in the event that I do make a mistake.

Bit late, but I usually dig a 1x1 hole straight down (i guess i like living dangerously) then i carefully widen the bottom to be 3x3x1, then i put a support in, then i expand a little more to about a 3x3x3 area and put another support in at the far wall of my little space and remove the first support so i can put my ladder back. From here it depends if i've hit the ore deposit dead on or if i have to search for it. If i hit it dead on then i just start hollowing out the area while using square-set timbering to keep it all supported. Square set is great because it conforms well to the contours of the void space. To tunnel safely you want to put in supports every 4 blocks so there's a 3 block gap between them. You can once your more comfortable with mining stretch that to every 6 blocks, so with a 5 block space between them, that's the max distance a horizontal support can reach, but you are risking collapse just a little bit by doing that so only do that when you know what your doing. As for blasting, you can use TNT to mine if you want. It's not too different from TNT mining in vanilla, but occasionally a cobble block will get knocked loose from the ceiling, but in my experience it doesn't trigger a major collapse as long as you've got a support nearby. Oh and because TNT will destroy supports you'll want to put a cobble wall between them and the explosion. Lastly there's the powder keg. I don't use the powder keg much for mining because it can be a bit.... unpredictable. I once brought down an entire section of cave with a stack and a half of gunpowder. All i wanted was to blow up a boulder for the rocks and cobble but the cave underneath it had other ideas.

I know it's a few months later but if you could make that followup video about the best way to go prospecting and build a mine it'd be great! There's a new FTB pack with TFC in it and I'm trying to build a mine and look for Tetrahedrite in an area where there are fragments on the ground but I'm getting random cave ins and haven't found any ores :(

Hey BigAl! Yeah i'd like to make some more starter tutorials too. In the meantime, if you are playing on 1.18.2, there is a built-in guide book for TFC that i believe talks a bit about the starting tools and such.

It's TFC. You have two options: 1: You can refuse to learn how it works, and constantly be surprised by it. 2: Or, you can study it, and try to strategize how to mine safely. There's nothing wrong with either approach. If you love the jump scares, you can definitely be in camp #1, and since the system is complex, you'll probably be constantly surprised by it. Personally, I'm definitely in camp #2. This is my favorite part of TFC. It is really complex, and the strategy keeps me engaged while mining.

The mechanics itself is complicated but I’m pretty sure you can condense the mechanics into simple intuitive rules of thumb. Like making sure you never leave blocks overhanging if they’re not supported. Don’t mine below or above the support beams. Place a support beam every 4 blocks (3 gap between support beams). Also, it looks like a chisel is mandatory for any serious caving as chiseled blocks are a nice way of adding stable points in your mine without having to mine out the block and replace it with something like planks (which isn’t exactly cheap in TFC).
