Dennis Edison - Hey John and Rob. I know you talked last week about James Cameron and Tim Miller had a rocky time making the new Terminator movie, but I wanted to know if you saw that Miller has now publically said he’ll never work with James Cameron again. This is the second significant bridge he has burned after departing the Deadpool franchise because Ryan Reynolds wouldn’t give him total control. What do you make of all this?

I believe it's a combination of Both Miller's inability to be more creative and the fact of the two films he directed. Deadpool will always be considered Ryan's passion project, and Terminator is...well, obvious! He just needs to create a pitch/story that a studio will green light and enjoy that freedom. He's got talent, he just needs to avoid passion projects or established franchises with the creator of it.

Two movies that were created and meant a lot to James Cameron: Terminator Dark Fate and Alita Battle Angel. Both were directed by someone else. - One guy (Tim Miller) thought he could take an existing franchise and have complete control over it without owning the franchise. He still gets invited to a beer at the end of the day in a respectful way of two artist finishing a difficult job. Gets angry over it. - Another guy (Robert Rodriguez) realized this was a passion project of someone else, and was there to do his thing, but always keeping in mind this is not his baby, he's there to direct, but he faithful to both the manga author and Jim's script and filmaking style, he finds room in the manga original to add a little bit of his own style during the fight and the bar scenes. Guess who's the more professional guy you would want to hire again.

This is very unfortunate to me. I know the movie wasn't a huge success, but it did open #1 and had positive reviews from fans and critics. These two should be together celebrating because they created a masterpiece. It's my favorite movie of the year. I went to see it four times and can't wait to watch it in 4K. The story is epic, and the movie has endless replay value. I wouldn't change anything about Dark Fate except its box office success. It should have been bigger.

Under normal circumstances I'd say "a director also has to follow through certain demands of a studio or producer to make a film viable for audiences. It may not be morally clean, but it happens. Business as usual". However, to have that repeat constantly over and over to a director that, like everyone else, tries to push his creative vision as much as possible, and then have that snatched from him an X number of times, it kinda shows a man who's defeated, someone who's not been given enough of a chance or trust to flex his directorial muscles, only enough to be a "safe option" for others to use and make a decent film, like leeches sucking too much blood. To be used the way he's been used, like a tool for others, is truly heartbreaking. I hope Miller gets a chance on the future to really let loose.

I have chosen what I think was the best path - i am chosen as a leader for a good reason but. . . . one of my crew who happens to be a camper at best objected. he said "YOU'RE PATH IS WRONG!" two times and my crew agreed because. . .well, he is experienced with this stuff so . . . . they were all eaten by a bear. In all honesty a producer’s job is to help guide the movie along not make too many big decisions. James Cameron has a nasty habit of being quite OCD about the films he has his name attached to and he should have backed off more. Tim Miller seems to get upset a bit too easy when it comes to having his ideas heard. I don’t blame Ryan Reynolds for disagreeing with his ideas for Deadpool 2, Miller probably had ideas that were probably too risky for the character. At least Tim Miller didn’t seem to upset over leaving that one. He does seem more hurt by Terminator as he was a fan and here comes James Cameron a man he probably respects a lot that wanted to shoot down a lot of the ideas he thought would impress him. It’s sad both parties here couldn’t work well with one another.

How about writing a script with characters we would care about? If anything that movie had zero character development. It had a main character that basically does nothing and recycled plots from other terminator movies that were less than thrilling, not to mention a car falling from a plane into water and everyone survives. Also, also, wasting a few really good actresses that do their best with roles that aren't great. That movie was like a test case for anything and everything text books about writing scripts tell you not to do, from interesting plot points we only get to hear about to flashback expositions to not really having a protagonist.

Tim Miller is not going to last as a director if he has this attitude. He has made some successful films, but if he is not willing to play ball and negotiate, people are going to find out about this and not hiring for stuff. And that in my opinion is a pretty “Dark fate!” We will never see him directing a Star Wars property, or another comic book film for that matter, all because he wants total control. I feel sorry for his wife and kids because if it’s bad in the studio with other directors and producers I can’t imagine what it’s like at home.
