The Terminator is a 1984 American science fiction action thriller film directed by James Cameron. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose unborn son will one day save mankind from extinction by a hostile artificial intelligence in a post-apocalyptic future. Michael Biehn plays Kyle Reese, a soldier sent back in time to protect Sarah. The screenplay is credited to Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd, while co-writer William Wisher Jr. received a credit for additional dialogue.
Cameron devised the premise of the film from a fever dream he experienced during the release of his first film, Piranha II: The Spawning (1982), in Rome, and developed the concept in collaboration with Wisher. He sold the rights to the project to fellow New World Pictures alumna Hurd on the condition that she would produce the film only if he were to direct it; Hurd eventually secured a distribution deal with Orion Pictures, while executive producers John Daly and Derek Gibson of Hemdale Film Corporation were instrumental in setting up the film's financing and production. Originally approached by Orion for the role of Reese, Schwarzenegger agreed to play the title character after befriending Cameron. Filming, which took place mostly at night on location in Los Angeles, was delayed because of Schwarzenegger's commitments to Conan the Destroyer (1984), during which Cameron found time to work on the scripts for Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Aliens (1986). The film's special effects, which included miniatures and stop-motion animation, were created by a team of artists led by Stan Winston and Gene Warren Jr.
Defying low pre-release expectations, The Terminator topped the United States box office for two weeks, eventually grossing $78.3 million against a modest $6.4 million budget. It is credited with launching Cameron's film career and solidifying Schwarzenegger's status as a leading man. The film's success led to a franchise consisting of several sequels, a television series, comic books, novels and video games. In 2008, The Terminator was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Arnold does not need to be the terminator. One just needs to remember Kyle Reese recollections of a terminator infiltrating his hideout in T1. Hollywood needs to carefully consider a series of dark, gritty movies as seen in T1 and T2.

I always wanted a TERMINATOR MOVIE that took place in the JUDGMENT DAY aftermath like how it is shown in TERMINATOR AND T2….. the laser weapons and fields of skulls and all that, humanity on the brink of extinction. Not how it was depicted in terminator: SALVATION at no point in that movie did it ever feel HOPELESS AND TJAT THE HUMANS COULD BE WIPED OUT COMPLETELY. We need to see THE TERMINATOR AND HUMAN WAR !

It really pisses me off that they didn’t have the original cast for certain movies. They kept the cycle of despair rolling. I’m waiting for the next one and maybe I’ll ignore the last couple ones that were made. Continuity is a imperative.

@@hankb7725 The John Connor that was killed actually ended up being a highly advanced android prototype that was swapped with the real John Connor in order to protect the leader of the resistance from being assassinated. It was so advanced it fooled his own mother. The future must happen to complete the loop. John Connor must exist in the future in order for himself to be born by sending back Kyle. In movies like this that deal with time travel, sci-fi tech, and alternate dimensions, anything is technically possible. Could be that Edward would play John Connor in the future. I'd imagine they are different dimensions or else the future John would poof if you killed the baby John. I think that would make a better story. Future John goes back in time to protect the past because he knows the future timeline is already lost.

Terminator 2 was so good it dragged me along to watch all the others. There are definitely cool moments in each of them but I love the idea and lore of Terminator more than any of the films that were made afterwards. I love the terminator franchise more than the films. If this film actually happens, I will inevitably half to watch it too.

Honestly, I'd love to see Schwarzenegger's son Joseph play the new Terminator. He's trying to break into acting, he's built like his dad, and he'll be a menacing presence on screen without needing to speak too many lines for anyone fearing that he can't act. Also, how badass would it be to have a father vs. son Terminator fight.
There are no Terminator films after T2.

It should've ended at T2 ,, and if 3 was to be made Cameron shouldve done it and it would've had to have been a smart script
