Terminator 2: Judgement Day Longplay (Arcade) [4K]

Game Info

Developer: Midway
Publisher: Midway
Year of Release: 1991
Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Loud, brash and exciting, T2: The Arcade Game is quite the spectacle to behold. Based on the blockbuster sci-fi sequel by director James Cameron, Midway produced a game that was the perfect accompaniment to the film itself. With a pair of plasma rifles bolted to the cabinet, two players fight for the survival of humankind against the rogue AI, Skynet.
The game is an on-rails shooter, set across two distinct missions. The first of these is set 2029, during the "Future War", with the resistance breaching Skynet's defences and launching an assault on the AI core. The second mission, following destructions of the core, sees the player sent back in time to the 1995 to defend the young John Connor. Here, you must destroy the Cyberdyne lab, grab the CPU and remains of the first T-800 and escape from a legion of SWAT guys, before engaging in a final showdown with the T-1000 in the steel mill.
When it comes to mechanics, the game takes the same approach as Operation Thunderbolt, dividing the screen vertically down the the centre of the screen. Player one will only take damage from projectiles or enemies shooting on the left half of the screen, while player two takes damage on the right side only. However, instead of conventional bullets, your gun has a 'Power' meter which decreases the longer the trigger is held, recharging when released, or when collecting power cells from supply crates. You also have access to a limited number of rockets, which are best suited to taking out groups of enemies, or dealing extra damage to heavily armoured opponents.
Unfortunately, while this mechanic might make things manageable for two players, the game makes little concession for a solo player. Not only do you have to take care of enemies on your own side of the screen, many foes will simply wander into your half because there's no second player to deal with them. The sheer number of terminators, HK units and droids you have to deal with is simply ludicrous, and it becomes clear very quickly the game is determined to shake you down for every last cent, quarter or penny in you wallet. It doesn't matter how good you are, you're going to have to dig deep if you want to beat this game.
If I'm honest, T2 isn't a great game; it's simply too difficult. As an attraction or 'interactive experience', however, it's remarkably impressive. You've got voice clips from Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, Robert Patrick reprising his role as the T-1000, plus some excellent artwork and awesome audio effects and music - this would almost certainly have caught your attention in a crowded room full of blaring arcade cabinets!
Trivia & Notes
---------------------------------------------------
- Co-programmed by Warren Davis, creator of Q*Bert
- Artist Jack Haeger, who worked on the game had also been art director at Amiga Corporation, assisted Andy Warhol in on stage during unveiling of the A1000 on stage at Lincoln Centre in 1985.
- Arcade1Up has produced a three-quarter replica of T2: The Arcade Game for sale: arcade1up.com/products/termin...
Video Notes
---------------------------------------------------
Given the difficulty of the game, there was no way I was able to destroy enough of the Cyberdyne lab AND deal with the SWAT team at the same time, at least not unless I wanted to keep on pumping in credits and simply ignore them. I guess it's probably feasible with 2 players in co-op, but that wasn't an option.

Couldn't do Level 3 with a SNES controller. We just couldn't move the cursor fast enough to kill the T-800s and the Hunter Killers before either us or the truck took too much damage. My family had the arcade guns, but they stopped working after I had wrapped the wires around too tightly and put them on my toy box. Otherwise, it might have been possible then. I managed to beat it and the entire game on an emulator decades later due to the speed of the PC mouse cursor.

No shit! I was just gonna say holy crap, this game is so repetitive and even boring compared to anything from the last 20 years, but I loved it so much and was always so excited when an arcade had this game and no one was using it. I honestly remember the graphics looking like the movie, and, at the time, they kind of did with what we had to compare it to!

I think the fact the game itself refers to itself as an "attraction" is telling - it's less of a game and more of an interactive experience, one that's going to force you to pump in money every so often if you want to see the end, regardless of how good the player actually is. As a spectacle, this really would have been quite the thing to see in an arcade, complete with all the licensed artwork, sounds and material recorded for the game by the actual actors (which itself wouldn't have been cheap to do).

Having said that, so much of the movie was missing in this game. the arrival of the terminators, the opening chase with John on his Motorcycle, Pescadero, Enrique's hideout, Dysons home, John's home..... they basically skipped the entire first half of the film.

The goal was to use the Player 2 right/red gun. As enemies would approach from the right of the screen, by the time they turn to shoot, they’re already hitting the left/blue Player 1 screen; thus NOT damaging the Player 2. This in addition to enemies walking on screen from the left are moving slower as they attempt to keep up with the moving screen. Finally, any enemies on the left side of the screen you’d literally leave alone, even if they were shooting. They wouldn’t be damaging you.

Remember that this game inspired many Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix shooters where health bars doesn’t give you temporary invincibility time, sheer amount of enemies, and insane bosses to the point of making health bars a time limit, meaning that if you damage after short seconds, you take less damage but if you play longer, you instantly die. Terminator Salvation is one of the examples of this as both T2 and Salvation were produced by George Petro.

Hey AL82, Cool that you managed to find the information on who programmed this game. I agree with you that this is not a good game because of the damn difficulty, especially for a single player in order to squeeze out as much money out of their pockets. But at the time this was probably the best Terminator 2 tie in game. Quite frankly the home computer games by Ocean were quit simply terrible, the awful Amiga/PC game comes to mind with its collection of mini games. In comparison the NES, gameboy, and SNES games were somewhat better, I say somewhat, with the Gameboy game probably being the best, followed by the NES game, and finishing last the SNES game. The Game Gear got a port of the NES game, while the Sega 16-bit got a copy of the crappy SNES game. Such a damn waste of the license. It would take years until there was a somewhat decent Terminator game; Terminator Future Shock and Terminator Skynet, though I think they aged badly. It would then take another long time until we finally got some better games based on the Terminator IP. I myself rather liked Terminator Dawn of Fate. Then followed Terminator 3 tie in. The much better Terminator 3 The Redemption. that Terminator Salvation game for PC/Xbox/PS3, with the mobiles getting their own versions. A shitload of mobile games. And finally the pretty decent to good Terminator Resistance which is probably the best use of the IP in a long time. Before that of course we did have games based on the first Terminator movie. The ones I know best are The Terminator DOS, Terminator for the Sega machines by Virgin while the NES and SNES received its own Terminator games by Mindscape (Sunsoft's Journey To Silius was suppose to be a Terminator game but Sunsoft for some reason could not use the IP name. It would have been a much better Terminator game than the actually NES Terminator game). The best game based on The Terminator movie was the SEGA CD game. There are of course also Terminator 2029/Operation Scourge, and Terminator Rampage, but other than perhaps interesting from a PC gaming history point of view they are not worth playing.

How were you able to penetrate the security level one and obtained the super truck bonus? You merely took down any HK during the ride. Is there any tip?
