I have a feeling that Berganza's velvety, yet tangy, voice is much more the type of voice for which Bizet wrote the role than the usual overweighted, barking sound that we usually hear. I like the fact that she is very charming, but very demanding and insistent as well. What a voice! What an artist! I love her.

She is my very favorite Mezzosoprano for ever and after ever. And one of my Titanic Heroes (because for me those are the REAL artists and their work when its been done with the heart will last forever and its ALWAYS going to be with you to melt your heart).

It's really fun that they're both two great Spanish opera singers, singing an opera set in spain, in french.

A perfect performance with just the right blend of light flirtatiousness and tone. Carmen is a young girl who just wants fun without commitment and Berganza captures this so well. With a young Placido Domingo as Don Jose.

I could not agree more. She has without question the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. For me no one can compare, nor even come close to the haunting, lilting, quality of her voice. Amazing!!!!!

Now here, & it's a matter of taste, I believe, I cannot agree. For me, the most beautiful VOICE belonged to Berganza's compatriot, Victoria de Los Angeles (whose Carmen is also stupendous), but as for mezzo so, yes, Berganza takes the win hands down, & for coloratura mezzos, also, imo. One of the most beautiful voices EVER for sure.

The best performance for this piece I've ever listened, Berganza is more than great!

This is absolutely one of the best renditions of this Aria, because of its elegance,easiness and non scholastic clarity and precision. Moreover, Berganza's voice is very good for Carmen: I like to imagine Carmen as a pretty, glamorous, sprightly young gipsy girl, not as an imposing matron with an high tonnage voice...

I have a bit different opinion. Carmen was definitely not type of the nice and docile girl. She was brutally egoistic and even a bit vulgar. Definitely not a princess. So with all my admiration toward Berganza I'm sorry to say her Carmen does not convince me. Just too correct and too polite. ;)

I've never loved Carmen that much until I saw this.

Her acting is simply so great.

I haven't seen so many Carmen and I don't dare to say wich one is the best... but Teresa is GREAT.

oh goodness, when she starts whipping that thing against the floor, I was like : Whoa, Carmen's a freak!

...nor have I heard such a lovely & echt musical voice.... her technique/timbre seems to vanished....placido dare not comment re the best carmen he's sung with!!!!

I have prepared the coro for Carmen several times in my 32 seasons as CM of Indpls Opera. Berganza has the best vocal color and approach to the role of any I have heard. Troyanos is awfully damn good too.

Berganza and Troyanos have such rich and musical approaches. True musicians. Soon as I hear a Carmen today, I hear that woofy, horrible, unclear voice that's so FORCED and u have to sit through the entire thing completely disappointed. Uria-Monzon and J'nai Bridges come to mind. Forced really like trucks going through the Holland Tunnel.

i saw this production later in 1982 without Dominguo and Raimondi (with Dupouy and Vento). Berganza was exceptionnal , fascinating, perfect (as always). there was also a very good team of second roles (Berbié, Ringart, Sénéchal...). It's in Opéra Comique where Carmen was created and with the dialogues parlés. I saw the projection of the film yesterday in the Louvre auditorium.

Estoy de acuerdo con tu comentario. Berganza es una de mis mezzos preferidas, pero por ejemplo para Carmen, yo prefiero a María Ewing o Agnes Baltsa. Es muy arriesgado decir que una cantante es la mejor en su cuerda. Cada una tiene lo suyo, hay muchas muy buenas.

Absolutely love Berganza. She is my favourite Carmen. Domingo is my favourite Don Jose. He is sooooooo sexy (sorry for the fangirl drool). I know this is from theatre nationale L´opera de Paris, but do you know if they travelled with this production? My mother saw Domingo in Carmen at Palacio de Bellas Artes this same year and I was wondering if Berganza was his Carmen then too.

Berganza corrige al mismo libreto con la palabra "Sevilla", que el autor afrancesa "Seville" y que ella pronuncia correctamente en español y así rime con "seguidilla" y "manzanilla". Todas las demás cantantes lo pronuncian en fancés y echan a perder la rima.

berganza es la mejor carmen!!!! magnifica si señor y Domingo es un tenor extraordinario

Berganza and Julia Migenes-Johnson are the only two mezzo who have the right voice for this role. Usually mezzos have a too dark and hard voice for Carmen which diminishes a lot of the sensuality and femininity from the role. Berganza a superior singer over Migenes-Johnson tho, very good technique and agility.

Eleine Sun she's good, but she doesn't have as much of a nice sensual voice. she has more of a generic mezzo voice.

Thanks God mezzos doesn't have a voice like screaming chicken. This woman sounds to me a very good soprano, also Migenes-Johnson.

me gusta pero hay algo de berganza en este papel que no termina de convecerme, es como que es muy de salon,como si confundiera Carmen con cherubino...

she has a beautiful voice but more of a soprano like Grace Bumbry and her voice and character doesn't suit to Carmen. it's more of Lucia di Lammermoor :D

Pues es cuestion de gustos. A mi me gusta la Ewing en Carmen, que no es una voz tampoco dramática, pero para tiene una presencia y un fisico muy interesante para Carmen. La Bumbry me gusta su timbre, pero no su presencia para Carmen, y asi. Todas son grandes artistas. Un saludo desde Mexico.

Claro es una Carmen de cine lastima que no tenga voz y tuviera que gravar cada aria frase a frase Pero par interpretar el papel de una puta lo hace muy bien
