@@tkermi It isn't stupid, it's a statement many experts have had the idea of. Stevenson was a graceful technician, and an excellent Cuban counterpuncher with a style perfect for the aggressiveness of the Golden Age. He knocked men out cold with amateur gloves, a testament to his power. He would've been a great pro. Would've been interesting to see him against the great pressure fighters of the day.

Tyrell Biggs was lucky the Soviet Bloc boycotted the '84 games. He was also lucky to win a bogus decision over Tyson in the Olympic trials. Of course, the Soviet wrestlers were lucky to have avoided a particularly strong group of American freestyle wrestlers that year too. Maybe that's why they didn't show up since wrestling was supposed to be their sport (JK). I don't understand all the political comments. Who cares about Cuba's politics? This was a sporting event. I understand that Stevenson was very proud to be Cuban, but that doesn't make him Fidel Castro. You have to admire the ability of a small and impoverished island nation to turn consistently turn out such great Olympic boxers and other athletes.

Stevenson was certainly great, but its a little ironic that a guy called Petr Sommer from Czech(oslovakia) beat him twice and absolutely nobody cares, hes a poor pensioner living in total obscurity who never gave any international interview. The same can be said about Igor Vysotsky who beat him twice and KOd him. Life, just like boxing, simply isnt always fair.

Silly debate. Stevenson fought kids. That would have been comparable to sending prime Tyson or Foreman to the Olympics every four years to fight the world's youth. Too bad for Stevenson and the world of boxing that he wasn't developed into a professional. Stevenson certainly wouldn't been the best during that era of heavyweights - but he may have become an interesting contender.

It's hard to say. While Stevenson looked great in international competition, he lost to other Cuban heavyweights at home in national competitions. His final record was 301 wins and 20 losses. So while he was a world class performer when there was a medal at stake, he wasn't exactly unbeatable. I doubt that he'd have been able to endure the demands of professional world class heavyweight competition. He would have had a few wins, but over time his tendency to lose against less than stellar opponents would have caught up with him.

Jorge You are absolutely correct. Lets also use logical thinking: Ok...so the amateur style is so different, and Cuban fighters all are steeped in this style. So How do Cuban fighters do when they turn professional? pretty damn well! Cuban fighters have no problems making the transition. Second: In an amateur bout a fighter must go from 0 to 60 in a round, more punches are thrown, better form is expected...both styles are a way of training. There is no reason to think Stevenson could not have trained different for a different setting. The fact is this guy, like Ali, had the speed of a middleweight, and power that would have been devistating. All the pros at the time said he would have been a handful and they were not just being nice. It is illogical to assume that Stevenson would not have been one of the best, watch the film it does not lie.

@@lifesgood7235 Yeah and you know that right? Your the type of bloke Jorge above was talking about. Heres a general principle that applies to all combat training: You fight the way you train. Stevenson a great champion. Shame that Biggs, who otherwise put up a game performance, tried to win on a faked low blow.

unfortunately , you are correct, it is not socialism, it is a state dictatorship, but one day , we will see a true socialist system, for and by the people.

He was loyal to the system that born him. Everything he archieved was because of the support of the state. If he turned pro it would have been like kicking a ladder away once he got to the summet not allowing others to climb and scale the highs he did.

You know, I always thought that right upper cut was a phantom punch Biggs never saw. But now looking at this again, Stevenson hit him low. Taking that low blow out, I still think Stevenson won the fight, although Biggs was THE most agressive opponent Stevenson ever faced!

@Belburg Yes, Page was probably better than Tubbs. A win over Stevenson would have given him a real chutzpah as he enterd the pro ranks.Instead he entered with the label of having ducked Stevenson. I really think Stevenson could have taken him though. Unless the fight turns into a Leonard vs Hagler track meet. But Stevenson was pretty fast too. And with those long arms, he would'nt have needed to give chase. Like many fans, I was dissapointed the fight never took place.

well to be honest( I am cuban 100%) not only ali, because ali was the best of all heavywights but 3 or 4 more boxers from the same time ,would beat stevenson up so hard I am sure his carreer would be shoter..for sure

Gig George himself said Teofilo would beat them all. I think he knows from what he speaks. At his first Olympics Teofilo was just "a kid "at 20 and beat the others.

Look how Biggs was exhausted and he faked nonchalance after the fight. But you can see he's a little too much dazed :-) and also, notice how Stevenson gave Biggs the illusion of being dominant in the first round. Biggs went down once and he struggled not to show his poor balance and confusion. Stevenson just played along without brawling, and won this fight easily to the points. :-)

Well, a boxing genius by the name of Roberto Duran who was a frequent guess of Fidel Castros, was visiting Castro in Cuba one time and Castro had asked him how would Teofilo do against Ali and Duran looked at him and said, "Are you serious, Ali would kill him." Dont get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Teofilo Stevenson but Ali was exactly the same thing but bigger, and with better movement, feet wise and head wise.

East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia , Hungary and many other. Do you know who initiated the political fall? Gorbachev. Any time any SU leader could tell the tanks: let's go. They'd go. Countries who had it unfortunate, had dictators. Even the SU became less harsh with the death of Stalin and that was in the 50s. Cuba will be a democratic country in our life, the dictators went out of fashion.

Western democracy is no different slaves are ripe throughout human existence regardless of what kind of ideal the country claims to hold dear. If you go to work you have a good chance of avoiding hunger. If you own a business or inherit one; you have the power to decide who will work or not.

You can see why the Cuban never turned pro. He'd get his ass kicked. Pretending to be an amateur when he was just a third rate professional. At least Biggs went on to be competitive in the professional ranks.

No he was not. Damiani has been the toughest fighter for Stevenson. Here it was Stevenson who was older, more patient and less poweful than in his prime. Stevenson played along with Biggs for the entire match :-) and Biggs was prettty stunned at the end altho he tried to act casual, eheheh. Stevenson actually won this fight pretty easily.
