It is strange - there was a long stretch of several decades in which it seemed that no pianists had any new ideas at all about how to play this concerto. You totally knew what to expect, which was a lot of blunt force and maximum speed with just an occasional touch of grace and nuance, and certainly nothing very original. Now, in the last few years, with fantastically detailed and thoughtful performances like this, is almost as if it is a brand new piece instead of an old warhorse. I love it! It makes me wonder - was I just not listening very closely for all those years, or was it really like that? Congratulations to Avdeeva, Currentzis, and the wonderful orchestra on a remarkable performance!

Your comment reads as if you had preferably heard Yuja Wang. Listen to the work with D. Trifonov, he is also convincing.

For me this revolution came when I bought my relatively expensive head phones. Yes, it is as simple as that. Suddely I was sitting in the audience, noticing all on stage, and also all in the audience. Like if I were there, really.

Je ne connaissais pas pour ma part cette merveilleuse pianiste qui domine magnifiquement ce concerto n° 3 de Prokofiev, c'est brillant. Quand au chef Theodor Currentzis, il est comme a son habitude parfait et doué d'une écoute et d'une direction remarquable.

The nocturn almost made me cry. Well It's Yulianna playing Chopin. It is so hard to cope with this combination.

This performance is both electric and reflective. It breathes, it has a clarity, especially by the pianist (new to me, and astonishingly good), in which the piano doesn't overpower the orchestra, nor vice-versa. I've been listening to this, recorded, for 55 or 60 years, starting with an LP in a "Recording of the Century" series (Angel? London? Decca? DG?) in which Prokoviev was the soloist. After a bit, I came to feel that his performance was not the best; or maybe the sound quality was noticeably deficient--I was less discerning then. But in all the other recordings I've heard since, no matter how well played, it came to seem (as "alkanist" says below) a warhorse. Now it lives again to my ears. Brava! to Ms. Avdeeva.

Pure Prokofievan magic! Ms Avdeeva's playing is immaculate. Her tempi in the 2nd movement are a bit faster than I have usually heard, but her version is good. Maestro Currentzis conducted a very pleasant and refined 5th symphony, and I think that this performance will be my first choice for a long time.Before this I listened to Gergiev with the Mariinsky on Euroarts (part of the complete symphonies as the orchestra's "Easter gifts to Russian people"). Thank you!

Исполнение концерта Прокофьева, считаю, вполне можно назвать хрестоматийным. Пианистка очень грамотно играет, пианистические движения все очень точные (мне очень понравилось работа с весом), в общем, приятно и слушать, и смотреть. Оркестр отработал великолепно. Спасибо за удовольствие!

That's how it supposed to be: selection of the masters of all kinds should be made by their talent and skills no matter which social group they represent. Not the opposite way, when THOSE try to be "fair" artificially creating the quotas ...

This was far far the best interpretation of Prokofiev no. 3 I´ve ever heard. Pure music.

Their musical phrasing are more clear than normal performance of the pieces.

Currentzis allège le final de la 5e en lui donnant un ton plus haletant que triomphal. Il compense avec la Danse des Chevaliers en bis. Choix intelligent. Tout le concert est bien.

Es sin duda una de las mejores pianistas actuales luego de Yuja Wang. Técnica perfecta y mucho sentimiento Excelente!!!!

It is always a privilege to hear Yulianna Avdeeva in concert. The closing of this Prokofiev concerto suggests that the soloist must have fingers, knuckles, wrists, forearms, elbows, shoulders of steel. Really amazing.
