Tens of thousands rally in Moldova for EU membership
Thousands of people have rallied in Moldova's capital Chisinau to back the government’s drive to join the European Union.
Demonstrators called on political leaders to amend the constitution to specifically mention the country’s European orientation.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has pushed its leaders to seek a quick path to EU membership.
Al Jazeera's Um-e-Kulsoom Shariff reports.

I wish them well but 7 years seems awfully soon. A large long strange strip of their country is occupied by a Russia. EU membership more than NATO is what Russia objected to for Ukraine. (NATO is just easier to blame without seeming completely controlling).

Bulgaria and Romania are on a Greece-Austria migrant route. If Bulgaria and Romania were accepted in the Schengen area, illegal migrants would travel easily from Greece to Austria without requirement to cross any non-Schengen border. That is why Austria vetoed their application.

Finland is in the process of integrating into NATO and Sweden is basically guaranteed. I expect Turkey will allow their ascension following their election, even if Erdogan win. Erdogan is being difficult to appeal to his voter base, but he really has no unaddressable reason to continue holding up the process after the election. Following that, Ukraine will certainly join NATO and the EU sometime after the war, regardless of the outcome. At this point a total defeat of Ukraine is a pipe dream, so Ukraine will firmly stay aligned to the West. This will also enclose Moldova in the EU and NATO and will make a firm alignment with the West inevitable, though I expect many years of reforms and ascension negotiations, and Transnistria, if left unsolved, will remain a barrier to integration. Georgia is in political turmoil right now, with oligarchs appealing to the Kremlin despite a broadly pro-EU population. The Russian backed breakaway regions will similarly present a substantial barrier to integration, but if Russia ends this war too weak, the power of Kremlin backed oligarchs will weaken enough, and political settlements in the breakaway regions (if Russia is unable to support them further) may be possible. Moldova and Georgia’s frozen conflicts present substantial barriers, but if Russia is too weak, whether it succeeds in some of its war goals or loses the war, these conflicts may inevitably end. Depending on the outcome of the Turkish election on May 28th, a CHP government would likely attempt to revive EU negotiations. This makes a prospective Turkish membership to the EU highly likely by the 2030s at least, but that is dependent on ousting Erdogan which, at this point, seems unlikely, though not impossible. If Turkey was to join the EU, it also enhances Georgia’s membership as it would create a bridge between the nation and the rest of the EU. Bosnia seems dubious still due to the internal divisions, with the country effectively being two states under one name. Unless issues with the Republic of Srpska can be solved, I think Bosnia’s membership to both NATO and the EU is unlikely. Because of the Serbian disdain for NATOs intervention in the Yugoslav Wars, Srpska and Serbia are both unwilling to cooperate with the EU or NATO at this time, but as Russia becomes an ever less reliable partner, they may have to rely more and more on them regardless of if they want to. Still I expect integration to be decades away. Like Serbia, Armenia relies heavily on Russia for support, but the wars against Azerbaijan have revealed the limits of partnership with Russia. It seems Armenia is growing increasingly impatient with Russia and might need a new player to balance against Turkish interests in the region which Russia seems unwilling to confront. Though NATO membership is unlikely under Erdogan, pursuing an eventual EU ascension may give Armenia the capacity to resolve its disputes with Azerbaijan and end the conflict between them. Belarus is a big if. As effectively a vassal of Russia, it is likely to grow increasingly reliant on and integrated with Russia and an insurgency at this time still seems unlikely to succeed. Still a weakened Russia in the coming years may be unable to contain such a conflict. Should Lukashenko be toppled and democracy be established, integration with the EU and NATO seems inevitable, but there’s no sign that will happen soon. Should Russia collapse or face a substantial internal conflict, almost all these countries suddenly become likely candidates for EU membership, and to a lesser extent NATO membership over the next 20 years or so, but I would caution against wishful thinking.

@@lif6737 Read it all, i must say i don't agree with it all but a great analysis never the less. My thinking is the Russian Federation will go through a breakup similar to the USSR. When USSR colasped during the cold war. It was for many reasons but the biggest one was they were broke (economy). If the worlds sanctions bite for a decade or so. The Russia Federation will go broke. You throw in a weakened military and discontented population due to the human losses in the war, no jobs and little future prospects. All those Russian Federation satellite nations under it's sphere will jump to the EU just like previously similar to the USSR disintegration. That's my prediction?
