Have you ever wondered if you're maximizing your tennis sessions with the ball machine? The ball machine is a great way to improve your tennis. It's always available, you don't need a hitting partner. HOWEVER, if you're making one of the five mistakes I see tennis players of all levels make when using the ball machine you're missing out. Or in the worst case you are hurting your progress.
Find out how to make the most out of ANY tennis ball machine in this video.

    i think one other mistake that many make is using the full hopper in one go rather than stopping occasionally or using less balls at a time. if you have 60 balls coming at you non stop you end up out of breath and using bad technic reinforcing any bad habits they may have. Bad practice makes permanent mistakes just as much as good practice makes good technic

    I'm really just a beginner - started this year - but feel quite validated by this. Our club has a ball machine that nobody uses and I asked if I could use it. It is SO fast. The balls sit in a bowl at the top and there's a spinning disc inside it. The spinny disc has three holes, spaced 90° apart. The idea being, you get three balls, and then a short break. On the lowest speed setting - the absolute lowest it can go - it fires the second ball when the first one reaches you. If you just want to stand there and hit, maybe that's fine, but if you also want to move around and practice footwork? This is terrible. Since nobody else uses it anyway, I taped the middle hole shut. Honestly, I wish I could make it slower still. I might block another hole, but at least this is somewhat sensible now. Lowest setting looks roughly like what you see in the video around 2:55 (Which is when I wrote this comment) - maybe a little faster.

    That's a weird machine! Yes, tape another hole shut if they let you. You can always increase pace again later.

    Maybe the machine has a “interval” setting , controlling the spinning of disk speed , not ball strength or spin .

  • @Yotanido

    @Yotanido

    @@Bb-yo6tr It has all three. When I was talking about the lowest speed, I did indeed mean the interval setting. It also works exactly as you described - by changing how fast the disc at the top rotates. Why you would ever want to go faster than the absolute minimum is beyond me, though. Way too fast. (Or, I guess I should say frequent)

    re: your point about the ball machine placement-for me, i'm using the machine just to get better so that i can have a productive time when i hit with a person. When i would be casually rallying with another person, the objective is typically to just consistently put the ball down the middle of the court, letting the other person decide whether to hit forehands or backhands. Right? Also, though, my machine does have oscillation, so i can get angles even when it's set up at the center. Good point, though, about using the machine to feed 'easy' so that you establish better technique, slowly. My mistake is in trying to get the machine to shoot at higher velocity and spin, to simulate rallying against a person just above my level. I need to slow it down.... This is something i always wondered about coaching i see online, though. The soft toss feeds-i understand they help you with the repetitive building of muscle memory(?) but they don't mimic real/live balls coming at you. For me, i can look like a pro with a soft toss or a self-drop, but when a shot is coming from the other side of the net, my footwork and approach are wacko. I'm going to try your tips this weekend.... Wish me luck.

    Yes, the hand tosses are great when you work on something really specific. What most videos don't show is that good coaches use them as the start of progressions and then later increase pace of the ball, frequency, change to racket feeds or live ball.

    I use a drill in which the ball get shot cross court, I have to hit a winner down the line but then move straight in for a put away volley then back to the centre baseline… it’s a killer. Maybe if you haven’t done it already… make a video on some efficient drills whilst using it. Sadly I got the tennis tutor prolite, not a bad machine but the plastic flaps for the hopper are so fragile and brake with a stray shot or even just the recommended amount of balls in
