Tennis Lesson: How To Put Away Short Balls

Tennis Lesson: How To Put Away Short Balls
Key Takeaways:
For short balls that land below the level of the net, move through them without stopping. When the ball is above the level of the net, pause before hitting your ball.
Go cross-court ONLY when you think you can hit a winner, otherwise, you will be leaving a large part of the court open. For that reason, go down the line for most of these short balls.

    One of the reasons for covering the high ball is that we tend to open the racquet face as our contact point gets higher. What feels like a square racquet face is really quite open and an open racquet face on a high ball is a recipe for disaster. I ask people to keep their racquet face square with their eyes closed while going from a low to high contact point. At low points the racquet is somewhat closed and at high it is way open. This is especially important for those of us with eastern grips on high balls and for those with stronger grips on low balls.

    Another thing to mention on short balls is not too get close to the net after hitting them- just in case your opponent gets to the ball to either lob or pass you. Best to stay just inside service line so that you can adjust for any smash or volley that might be needed to finish the point.

    Hi my friend what is your thoughts on the Wilson tour force, I have been hitting with this racquet recently, and I just started playing again after a 25 year hiatus, it is funny I am still hitting the extremely clean and have been using your lessons to improve, I use a semi western grip on my forehand and a continental grip on my serve. I appreciate your hard work on your videos, thank you my friend.

    HI Shaun, Thanks for your question and feedback. The Tour Force certainly isn't one of Wilson's flagship racquets, but if you like it, go for it! Glad my lessons are helping you! All the best, John

    @@PerformancePlusTennis I have a tendency to bend racquets after playing with them for a little while, I used to play with the Wilson Profile 95s when I use to hit the ball extremely flat, but since I have been watching your tennis videos, I changed my swing up and use a little more top spin. I have 3 of the Wilson tour forces and I am playing with nylon strings, which I never really played with before, I used Boa natural gut in the profiles which I still have, I have to admit that the Profiles are one of the best racquets I have ever played doubles with and I am only 5’7 and I used rip the ball on return of serves and I was really good at the net, and my ground game was very good also, in the 90s I was ranked a 5.0 player and won a few of the club tournaments in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. I think it would be awesome playing doubles with you as my partner, because I laugh and have fun, and I never get stressed out or tense while I am playing. I really enjoy the game so much that I would play with a broom if I had too. I also play tennis against all levels, and I have never been a player who doesn’t want to play players that aren’t as good as myself. I trained everyday and I worked so hard when I was younger, that I am able to play today with a little skill. My problem is that I have had two hip replacements and a plate in my left shoulder, so I got pissed that I wasn’t able to move for a while, as I was in a wheelchair and I had to learn how to walk again, but I am back now, and I want to show other disabled people that they can do things in life, no matter what other people say they can’t do. I loathe the word can’t! I did take your advice on my training and I stopped hitting ten bucks of serves a day, I just hit one or two buckets and watch your videos on how to improve my toss. I am also 51 years old now, and I want to get ranked again and play in tournaments again. I appreciate everything you are doing for people, your a good man my friend. If I ever get a chance I would like to play at your club and maybe I could hit with you, but no running me around to much big fella. Hahe GOD bless you my friend.

    @@ShaunSweeney71 Hi Shaun, Thanks for the detailed update on your game. I am inspired by your determination to play again at a high level and inside other people to go for it! I do suggest you spend at least 25% of your training time on mobility - the combination of flexibility and strength. This will improve your performance and also reduce the chance of future injuries. Best of lick to you, and keep me updated on your progress! Best, John

    Great stuff. If you arrive at the ball that is shoulder high, do you hit down on it, or let it drop a bit and swing through it?

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

    @PerformancePlusTennis

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jawad Ali Hi Jawad, Thanks for your question. I would let the ball drop slightly and swing through as you see me do in the video. You should not feel the sensation (or have the intention) of hitting down...only the feeling of a slightly closed racquet face on the shoulder high contact inside the service line...I hope this helps. Kindly, John

    A mistake I often make on a short ball is that my swing of the racket is too long meaning that I hit the ball long. I've read that the general rule of thumb is: a full swing at the baseline; a half swing at the service line; and no swing at the net (for volleys).
