Tennessee Williams documentary

Thomas Lanier Williams III (March 26, 1911 - February 25, 1983), known by his pen name Tennessee Williams, was an American playwright and screenwriter. Along with contemporaries Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller, he is considered among the three foremost playwrights of 20th-century American drama.
At age 33, after years of obscurity, Williams suddenly became famous with the success of The Glass Menagerie (1944) in New York City. This play closely reflected his own unhappy family background. It was the first of a string of successes, including A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), Sweet Bird of Youth (1959), and The Night of the Iguana (1961). With his later work, Williams attempted a new style that did not appeal as widely to audiences. His drama A Streetcar Named Desire is often numbered on short lists of the finest American plays of the 20th century alongside Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night and Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.

I love his style. Intense. Complex. Insightful. Sad that so many incredible talents, suffer with personal life and it’s difficulties. I’m grateful for his gifts of lasting and timeless human connection stories.

I’ve seen several of his plays put on in London…what a man. He understood the human condition in a way few did. He certainly understood me.

In my opinion, the finest playwright ever in the American theater. My personal favorite: “Summer and Smoke.”

A brilliant writer. My favourite work of his "The Glass Menagerie". To say his life was troubled is a huge understatement. Thank you for posting this.

Love how we speak of addiction as if it's "not normal"....a lot of people are drug or alcohol addicted, especially sensitive people, life can be brutal.

"Yes, I have tricks in my pocket. I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion". And with those five sentences, Tom's opening monologue in The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams roared into theater history.

He felt deeply. Maybe that was why he could write. Dickens said, "Genius always pays for the gift."

He was a genius. I know what clinical depression is and my heart is with anyone who suffers that disease.

I guess Dakin needed to believe that because he was cut out of the will. I don't fault him for intervening to save his brother's life, but he should have honored his wishes for after death.

Dakin may have saved Tennessee's life but no one who suffers the torment of clinical depression could ever be grateful for their life being extended when it means extending the torment as well. The only reprieve is usually some kind of drug or drink whether it is legal or not.
