Out of the Closet, Off the Screen:The Life of William Haines(2001 documentary)

What price Hollywood? was the title of an early George Cukor film, but is a question every closeted movie star has probably asked himself. In 1930, the top box office star was a gay man. Billy Haines lived with his lover, Jimmie Shields, and never posed on the red carpet with a beard on his arm. By 1933, he was washed up in show business; and by 1936, he had become hugely successful in an entirely new line of work-interior decorator. Out of the Closet, Off the Screen: the Life of William Haines details the extraordinary life of Billy Haines, the only matinee idol who ever decided that Hollywood’s price was too high and walked away from film stardom.

Ignored by the press in Willaim Haine's obituary I breathed a sigh of relief to learn Jimmy Shields and Billy are interred together, to symbolically be at each other's side as they truly lived in life. Beautiful and respectful documentary, one I'm glad to have randomly come across and enjoy.

Billy Haines was my father's favorite movie star. I grew up hearing a lot about his movies, but never about his sexuality. In 1954, when I was 10 years old, my family moved to LA and my father and I went up to William Haines house and rang his door bell. He invited us in and we also met Jimmy Shields. Both men were very courteous as my father told them of his youth spent seeing every movie Haines made. I remember there was a lima bean shaped swimming pool in the back and canaries in a cahe built into the wall with bamboo bars. Mr. Haines told my dad that when you started to slip in Hollywood, it was like walking on air! He even signed my autograph book!

"The way he lived his life, not for any great movie role or any great decor that he did... Ultimately what made Billy Haines important was how he chose to live his life, according to his own values" Good for him! It is a shame that he has been relegated into relative obscurity. In this day and age, he should stand as a pioneer in human rights and a role model for anyone who is asked to be something they are not.

adrian Last , I agree with you. The original comment was applauding Billy Haynes- an openly gay man, something that may not always be commonly done in many heterosexual, male sections of society. I think the writer (Mr. Wilson) wanted us to know he wasn’t gay, had no bias because he, himself, was straight, and thought Mr. Haynes’ actions were brave and courageous. It’s a shame some people are so over-sensitive, they don’t even realize what a compliment he was trying to convey. Instead the guy gets insulted. Guess he may not do that again.... What a shame.

Back in 2012 Billy Haines' story was turned into an excellent musical (Tailor Made Man, named after one of his films) about his rise to fame and then the fall due to him refusing to give up Jimmie, and then his rise again as an interior designer. IIRC the reason few people have heard of him is because after the scandal Louis B Mayer at MGM had all his films withdrawn from circulation and placed in MGM's vaults. He was effectively removed from existence within the public arena. Again, IIRC, his story emerged when TCM gained access to MGM's archives in a deal they'd made and they started showing films that had been buried for decades. This is a beautiful story of enduring love, and no matter what anyone says, love is love.

Uhm... and this is what is called integrity, the term that is often overused nowadays. Few of current Hollywood male A-listers could have learned from Billy Haines’ life, but they decided not to. Joan Crawford has been given much earned credit in this documentary, and this speaks to the integrity of the authors of this very informative, truly well done piece.

I had never heard of William “Billy” Haines, as I was born in the 50s and he was no longer in the movies or even on TV by then. But I’m glad to have heard his joyous story and to realize the courage it took, especially in those days, for him to be true to himself and his partner, tells me that he was a strong man, a VERY strong man, and the furthest thing from a “Panze”, as he was called by the smug, self-righteous movie moguls in those days. Good for him, and Jimmy!

Mayer was a big guy in the film industry who could, along with other people like Hedda Hopper the gossip columnist, make or break a career in Hollywood due to them having all the power and influence they did over people's personal lives!!!!!This was all part of the so-called "Studio System"when they practically OWNED YOU,like an animal that could be traded or sold!!!!That makes me sick to think about it STILL being like that TODAY IN 2020!!!!!!Have you ever heard about the Hollywood guy that would get whoever you wanted(guy or girl)if you were famous in Hollywood?I saw a documentary about him,but can't remember his name now!!!!! If it helps he wrote a book about doing this for people like John Wayne and Joan Crawford, just to name a few!!!! If I'm remembering right(possibly not, though),I think he was nicknamed "Hollywood's pimp"due to being able to get all these famous people whoever they wanted to sleep with at the time!!!!!This REALLY,REALLY sounds like an INTERESTING AND JUICY READ for all of us celebrity-obsessed people who like knowing all their dirty laundry that most people don't!!!!!!Sorry for the long post!!!!!

This AMC documentary was suggested to me by KZread, and I'm so glad it was! I had never heard of William Haines before, but being a lover of old movies and the 1920's, I found it fascinating. He had a true friend in Joan Crawford. That kind of friendship is rare, especially in show business, and one that I find truly enviable. The Puritanical background of the US is still evident in our society today, but we are seeing more positive gay role models on TV these days. I sensed that many people tolerated or overlooked William Haines' relationship with Jimmie Shields, which is just not good enough for me. The day when gay relationships are considered a regular part of our society will come long after I'm gone, I'm afraid, but I sincerely hope it does come. I spent a large part of my life overseas, and I'm delighted to report that life as a gay man is very different in other countries of the world! Thank you, innocentti, for sharing this with us!

Acceptance begins with one person at a time until it becomes a normal way acting for a majority of people. ‘F**** t used to be a common everyday word ; now it’s a word that is unacceptable to many people . Using it will get you fired at work. Thirty years ago it would have gotten you a big laugh or at worst a verbal reprimand. I hope things get better and love will continue to drive out hate. I don’t hold out hope for any kind of universal acceptance of anything. People don’t seem to agree 100% on anything anymore. I’l take legal protections over fickle public opinion any time.

If I found an actor or actress interesting I would try to find information so I could understand their lives in those times as much as possible. I learned that Dolores del Rio was a frequent guest at the Hearst Castle as well as William Haines and so was in the Hollywood A List of the time but I never knew he was gay, his banishment from MGM and movies altogether, nor of Jimmy, the love of his life. Early in her career, Joan Crawford made arrangements with a doctor at a hospital (who saw all of the MGM employees and their families) to reserve two rooms, and if there was ever anyone in one of those rooms unable to pay the medical bills, that Joan would cover all their expenses. The doctor liked the idea so much that he too paid for medical treatments out of his own pocket for MGM & family treatments at the hospital. This story didn't get out until well after Joan had passed away and the doctor could then reveal the truth about Joan Crawford. It speaks to Joan's sincerity that she did not want anyone to know about her paying hospital bills for those in need, and she never did tell. The doctor felt he could tell the story once Joan was gone.

Joan Crawford was an extremely loyal Person, she also nursed her Ex-husband Franchot Tone and always had much respect for his talent. As far as I know only Christina told about being mistreated. Most probably Miss Crawford was a difficult character, but much of "Mommie dearest" was fiction for better sales.

People are quite complex. I’ve never gotten that either how a person can be one way to one person and totally different to others.

This story demonstrates that true love is blind to all our foolish boundaries...

It's sad that he had to make that choice, but I admire him for choosing his love and his true identity above Hollywood.

Fascinating piece. I was unfamiliar with this trailblazer until about an hour ago. What an inspiration. :)

Likewise. It’s like I have no idea of the time, day or place I’ve been so captivated by this revelatory documentary so superbly made.
