TENET Explained (Ending & Plot Breakdown)

Ойын-сауық

The TENET ending and plot may be confusing to understand for many people who've seen the film. In this breakdown of Christopher Nolan's TENET, I've explained it all. There are heavy spoilers in this video.
John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.” Armed with only one word-Tenet-and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

    The movie should be called inversion But if there was going to be a part 2 of this movie then call it inversion, Christopher Nolan you can use my idea if you give me a small talking part in part 2 of the movie I be happy saying two or three lines I do not mind working for small cheap fee or even free I give you ideas of part 2 and being stuck in a time loop is one of the ideas

    It's not until this video that I finally grasped as to why everyone in the Opera House were sleeping. Because I had totally missed the point about the gas being entered into the auditorium, I thought all the people were actually dead due to gunfire from the terrorists. But if that were the case, there should be so much blooood. But that isn't possible with a PG-13 film so I thought it was a mistake on the films part. But nope, just me still being a dumb ass. The sound mixing is terrible though and the dialogue really should have been cleaned up.

    I love how Memento is kinda like a brainchild version of Tenet, where Nolan had limited budget and resources to make a film like Tenet back then so he played with his storytelling/narrative methods. They are equally elegant in my opinion in that these two films both manifest Nolan's obsession with time. Well I mean every single Nolan film had some aspects of his obsession with time but these two really showed how poetic and beautiful it is when two different timelines meet in the middle.

    I want to give a silly theory that EVERYTHING about the shooting and editing of this was intentional. It was purposely hard to understand so that our first viewing would give us a lack of details and facts as one would have if they’ve experienced a moment for the first time. But like tenet, our past selves would see the movie and mentally playback what we watched, to go see it again, giving our future future selves more details than before to process it clearer. I picked up on so much more the 2nd time and of course that happens with any movie that you see twice but it seems like this was (according to my theory) intentional. Of course Nolan can’t invert an audience, but maybe he could mentally.

    Obviously when the protagonist fights himself the 'annihilation' is avoided because the gas mask and uniform one of 'them' is wearing means they avoid skin contact. But why does it have to be just skin contact that would result in that? What about the kinetic energy that transfers between them when punching each other and having some psychedelic MMA? That energy comes from the same person in two different places at once and transfers between them.

  • @CortexVideos

    @CortexVideos

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think it’s about a positive and negative molecule interacting that would cause the annihilation. Someone did a great video on this but I’m not sure who it was. That suit he wears essentially denies that contact between the molecules, and it was made in the future. It is a great question though. Apparently, Kip Thorne did a lot of the science in the film and it takes a lot to process it

    Impossible. To time travel, you can't pick a point in time to time travel. For max to be neil, the protagonist has to wait 20 years until neil comes of age, teach him about tenet, then they both go in the chamber to reverse time, live in backwards world for anlther 20 years to go back to the point before movie begins. That's 40+ years of waiting. Protagonist is like mid 30s at best at the beginning, he will be 70+ in the end. At keast 20 years of living in backwards world, do they have enkugh oxygen supply for that? How do they eat and drink?

    The greatnesses trick Nolan played on us is that he edit the movie in away as if we are following the protagonist from a liner editing as if we are moving in a straight line , but you can’t arrive to any answer that way unless you see and perceive each scene as events & things are happening to the characters in different versions of them and forget that you are watching a movie as we are use to, you just think that you are following one direction, One protagonist, but if you see The characters as different versions of them self you will get the big picture, Time inversion & parallel universe are ideas so alien to us and we are not used to witness it in our life ,and so it supposed to be hard for our brains to understand even if we saw it visually, i feel like you can arrange the movie in anyway and still as confusing , but the best way was to cut the movie in away as if we and the protagonist start the movie not knowing anything, and so it’s our job to rearrange the events and look at the movie from above and see all the characters and different versions of them are moving at the same time

    It was almost like Robert Pattinson was the main character (of this story in time) but you did not get to see it from his perspective you see it from Washington's perspective up until the end where it is revealed that Washington is the main character even if he did not know at at the movies current time. :D Robert P's character basically was saving the future by helping in the past and Washington could not know Pattinson's full mission because he (Washington) has not recruited him (Pattingson) yet.

    Opera scene was more confusing thqn the ending. Please explain this to me if you have watched the movie🥺 if opera scene was a test, then why Niel protected protagonist? What was inverted in the opera scene? Niel or bullet? Because Niel turned backward not walked backward after shooting which shouldn't be the case when he was inverted. The person who was shot dead by the Niel, why he said "you don't need to kill these people". When in fact the protagonist was saving them and those are the ones who are planting the bombs. That scene was also confusing when they exit opera after the explosion in the van and the person pointing the gun to the protagonist What was the point of the whole opera scene??

  • @hyola

    @hyola

    3 жыл бұрын

    The Opera scene wasn't the test. It was the abduction and torture to give out the location of his team. That was the test. The siege at the opera house was real because Sator's team were trying to get the piece of the algorithm but failed. The Neil that saves the protagonist is inverted along with the bullet he catches. Neil can turn backwards after catching the bullet(he did not shoot it) just like the protagonist could move freely the first time he inverted. The person Neil shoots(technically he caught the bullet) dead to save the protagonist did not say that. It was the protagonist that said "you don't need to kill these people". I can understand why that was hard to figure out because of the mask everyone was wearing. So before they escaped the opera house, the protagonist had told his team to split up. He wanted the dude they extracted to take the tunnel exit he had originally planned to take before the siege happened, along with two members of his four man team. Because he no longer trusted the Ukrainians that brought them there. The protagonist along with his other team member who had switched clothes with the dude they extracted, went back to the van to meet the Ukrainian guys who expected them to have the extracted guy with them. He just didn't know that the Ukrainians who were not part of the CIA like they were, worked for TENET and wanted to recruit him. I hope that helps a little bit.

    8:55 The algorythym is very very difficult to understand. I think what Sator does is assemble the algorhythym, then bury it and send it to the future. The dead man's switch doesn't activate the algorithim, it simply 'sends and email' to the future telling them where to find it and activate it. But not entirely sure. The giveaway imo is that Sator dies too quickly. He dies before the algorithim is secure.

    I think it has been mentioned in here earlier but wanted to elaborate and see what you guys think. Do you think that the final scenes of the movie are telling us it is possible to travel back and change what's happened? The Protagonist gives Kat the phone and tells her to call - giving her location - if she feels she's in trouble. Sure enough, at the end, the Protagonist arrives within a few moments of the call to kill Priya and save kat. Does this mean that the protagonist had to shadow Kat continually, staying a few minutes away from her at all times (till she's safe once and for all) possibly for years? Unlikely. Does Priya actually kill kat in some timeline, but before kat 'dies', she leaves that voice mail for the Protagonist. He receives the call and inverts himself and kills Priya before she kills Kat. This is why knowing the location is important. He would know where to go to save her thus changing the future. It also ties in with the voice over happening at the same time about no one's worrying about the bomb that never goes off. Perhaps this is no different from Neil saving the Protagonist at the Opera though....... Also just wondering, if you are inverted... do you age in reverse too? Ie get younger? That would rule out Max being Neil. I don't think max is Neil anyway...I think it's misdirection. Amazing film though... I'm still thinking about it a lot and reading almost a week on from first viewing. Great video and explanation sir!

    One thing I don’t understand is that if Neil has travelled inverted to the start of JDW’s mission (and then end of his missions with JDW) then why isn’t he in reverse? Same with Kat when she travels back to Sator on the boat in the past?

  • @CortexVideos

    @CortexVideos

    3 жыл бұрын

    They can travel back but also go in forward motion. During the scenes that you list, both characters are not inverted. Neil uses inverted mechanics to catch the bullet but he himself isn't inverted. The reason JDW is inverted in the car chase, is because the time stile machine he went through is controlled by Sator, meaning the only way to go back and have control of forward time was to get to the freeport where he fought himself to make that happen. Hope it helped!

  • @jv.xavier7434

    What do you think of the theory that Kat and Sator's son is actually Neil? This comes from an interview that Nolan said "Neil" is just one of Robert Pattinson’s identities. That woud've explain how he knew that JDW was going back to Kat, as it´s said "Even from a far" . (Also, i think the movie gets way more simpler when you just accept the inversion mechanics, cause i didn't find the plot so complex as they say. Instead it, the action scenes were way more hard to follow)

It would take years for it to happen but also it happens simultaneously because "time travel".

    I'm a huge fan of time-travel stories, especially the ones involving time paradox concepts. One that come to mind is a smart time-travel novella I've read around March titled Project Dechentreiter (2015) by Elder Prince. I couldn't understand the story from one-time reading, my mind was in torment even though there were so many clues and puzzle pieces hidden in plain sight. Everything made so much sense after a second read (luckily the story only counts 80 pages), and what a fantastic e-book that I highly recommend. There was also a movie called Time Lapse (2014), that one included brilliant ideas but wasn't executed with elegance, but is a good watch anyway. I can't wait for Christopher Nolan's next movie!

Particularly the painting robbery sequence and the motorway heist in Estonia. Its that everything timed to perfection and professionalism of the operators.

    That’s a good point. For me it’s like taking bond but infusing It with a Mann was esque style. I agree hat the action is more Mann inspired though

    @@CortexVideos Yes, thats exactly it. Taking the Bond ideas and infusing realistic Michael Mann style action. Well said.

    Any Idea where can I find Original Soundtrack of this movie? I really want to listen to that slow mysterious background score which plays often in the movie specially when the scenes are emotional and when John David Washington stays back in the windmill

    Okay, so explain this: The two protagonists enter the hallway in the airport and see bullet holes in the windows. One asks "what happened here?" The other responds "It hasn't happened yet." So, from the perspective of someone moving forward in time, when did those bullet holes appear? How long had they been there? They weren't there in the previous scene in the same location. So from the perspective of an inverted person, do the bullet holes fade away? The whole movie has this problem, I could give a dozen examples. Just admit it makes no sense at all.

    Even I had the exact same question but I think I might have an answer for this. So when the protagonist inverted himself and put himself into Hyperthermia, he was saved by the tenet organization back on to the boat which was also reversed. There he finds out a wound on his right arm all of a sudden which is healing backwards to the point where he gets stabbed by his past self in the hallway. So here is my theory to the problem ur talking bout, "how long had the bullet holes been there ". I think the bullet holes appeared on the glass once the protagonist from future inverted himself. By doing so, he makes it possible for those bullet holes to exist. So, the bullet holes weren't really there on the glass until the future protagonist inverted himself. U might ask "how does it make sense for the bullet holes appearing on the glass and the future protagonist inverting himself when both the timelines are different". The answer is that time is linear and all timelines are connected to one another. This concept is shown with the whole sator dying in one timeline would trigger the algorithm stored in another timeline.

    This movie was fire, my only issue was the ending where I had no idea who they were fighting. It was like they were shooting bullets at ghost.

    It was sator's army from the future from what I understand. But yeah this is only clearer on rewatch, something that could have been clearer first time around.
