"Tenderly" - The Hi-Lo's (Virtual Quartet)

Музыка

Thanks for watching!
What you're seeing is a collaborative singing video comprised of 4 guys from three different countries to form a virtual quartet (from left to right):
Tenor II - Simon Craipeau - France ( / simoncraip )
Tenor I - Jean-Baptiste Craipeau - France ( / jbcraipeau )
Bass - Evan Sanders - United States ( / strad43 )
Baritone - Andrew Kesler - Canada ( / andrewkesler )
The song is "Tenderly", with music by Walter Gross and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. This vocal arrangement was done by the great Clare Fischer, and made famous by the amazing group "The Hi-Lo's". The transcription of this song was done by Jean-Baptiste.
JB contacted us proposing the idea of covering this song as a KZread project about a month ago. Knowing JB's incredibly high level of musicality (and having met and recorded with him this past summer) , I said yes immediately, and was pleased to be singing with Simon (whom I also met) and being introduced to a great bass singer, Evan.
We recorded the audio part by part, finishing with me. I then edited and mixed the song in Logic Pro. After discussing some ideas for the video, we decided to go for the old and classy black and white look. We all then filmed our parts separately in front of home-made green screens, and then I edited the video in Final Cut Pro.
HUGE thank you to my older brother Joel (www.joelkesler.com/) who filmed me and also did a lot of the editing to make this project look much better than if I had done it alone.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE HIGH-QUALITY MP3 FOR FREE HERE: www.filedropper.com/tenderly
Anyways, thanks for watching and for all your continuous support! It was a LOT of hard work, and hopefully we'll have some more collaborations in the future. NO PITCH CORRECTION USED!
Don't forget to rate, comment, subscribe and share this video! It would really mean a lot to us!
(there may be hidden links at the end of the video to some secret footage... ;)

How wonderful that we've finally found some young American people who have such a love for The Great American Songbook, they've re - created one of the hits of The spectacular Hi - Lo's ! We need much more of this, not only because they sound good and authentic, but also because The United States may be the only Nation on earth where its citizens are generally ignorant of their rich musical history. So this may remedy that .

This vocal arrangement was written by the great jazz pianist/composer/arranger Claire Fischer, who wrote many of the Hi-Lo's early arrangements. He was their accompanist in the late 1950's. Beautiful chart, meticulously sung. Bravi!

Hello Evan. I admit to being dumbfounded that those are NOT the Hi-Lo's. I'm confused that the title says "Tenderly - The Hi Lo's," rather than the name of your group, but that aside, it's a perfect and beautiful re-creation of a style of singing that I thought was pretty much lost. You guys are superbly talented. Thanks again.

@AndrewKesler Thanks! Now I can sleep tonight! LOL Pre-recording the audio makes total sense. The post-production work proves that you could give up music and be a hard core video editor or producer. I really love your passion and dedication - it's so refreshing to see in such an apathetic world.

PLEASE DO this with Gene's "Through the Years" !!!!!!!!!! The technology allows the recording quality to be far better than Hi-Lo's could have ever imagined...I saw them sing this song live in the late 80's, and it was after the concert in the green room, I was standing no more than 10 feet away... ....probably THE BEST singing I've ever heard live. This is pretty much the vocal style I can't figure out the harmony parts to because they're so well blended and meandering all over the place. I can usually figure out the three part harmonies to stuff like CSN, Little River Band, Fleetwood Mac and others, but not this. This is in a league all its own. Fantastic!!!

I've been a fan of The H-Lo's, for more than 40 years and as they occurred the Four Freshman, Singers Unlimited, Swingle, etc. But especially the Hi-Lo's were to me, gods. You've done a wonderful job with this recording. I'd love to see the sheet music of the parts. Is there any way I could get a transcription. Please. I play piano and sing. My son graduated from Aaron Copland School of Music in NY. We are music and especially vocal music maniacs. Thank you. Great job. I'm subscribing now. :)

Kudos to you for a truly excellent recreation of that great old recording. Enjoyed immensely. One suggestion (ah, right, here we go): A more informative title might be something like "Tenderly" a la The Hi-Lo's or "Hi-Lo's cover". Frankly, you guys nailed it so tight that some commenters here thought they were listening to a lip-sync version ! Do keep up the great work.

Okay, guys; you JUST screwed up my playlist strategy: music such as yours SHOULD go on my "Acapella" list, suitable for listening by ANY guest. But this song DEMANDED that it be added ONLY to "Strictly Sensual," which is not precisely geared for "public" consumption, since many of the songs on it make me cry. . . Well, I'll deal with it!

@AndrewKesler Yes blend is very important. Even though I consider myself a strong enough solo singer, it is obvious that a great ensemble is not about its members; its about itself (as selfish as that sounds lol). Also, since I've been fathoming the idea in my head about starting my own acapella ensemble, but I don't know where to begin. I feel like I might be able to pull together arrangements of potential pieces for the group to sing, but I don't know where to begin besides that. How should I?

Hey Andrew. I'm currently attending a high school with an arts program where I am a part of both the choral (vocal) and instrumental music disciplines. For vocal music at the school I am currently only in Concert Choir where I sing tenor, but I'm thinking of becoming involved in smaller vocal ensembles. I see as you are generally a tenor with a falsetto (like myself) that you might have some tips for singing that voice part in an ensemble, specifically jazz, barbershop and more contemporary.

So, Andrew... I have to know... So, everyone is in front of their chroma screen in their own studio. You send them a diagram showing where their light source should be. They all shoot in high def in the same format. Use a pitch pipe to get them started. Use a metronome, so the synch will be perfect when you edit it all together.... They must send you a disc, since their file would be too big to just email to you... Am I close?
