"Tenderly" - The Hi-Lo's (Virtual Quartet)
Музыка
Thanks for watching!
What you're seeing is a collaborative singing video comprised of 4 guys from three different countries to form a virtual quartet (from left to right):
Tenor II - Simon Craipeau - France ( / simoncraip )
Tenor I - Jean-Baptiste Craipeau - France ( / jbcraipeau )
Bass - Evan Sanders - United States ( / strad43 )
Baritone - Andrew Kesler - Canada ( / andrewkesler )
The song is "Tenderly", with music by Walter Gross and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. This vocal arrangement was done by the great Clare Fischer, and made famous by the amazing group "The Hi-Lo's". The transcription of this song was done by Jean-Baptiste.
JB contacted us proposing the idea of covering this song as a KZread project about a month ago. Knowing JB's incredibly high level of musicality (and having met and recorded with him this past summer) , I said yes immediately, and was pleased to be singing with Simon (whom I also met) and being introduced to a great bass singer, Evan.
We recorded the audio part by part, finishing with me. I then edited and mixed the song in Logic Pro. After discussing some ideas for the video, we decided to go for the old and classy black and white look. We all then filmed our parts separately in front of home-made green screens, and then I edited the video in Final Cut Pro.
HUGE thank you to my older brother Joel (www.joelkesler.com/) who filmed me and also did a lot of the editing to make this project look much better than if I had done it alone.

Anyways, thanks for watching and for all your continuous support! It was a LOT of hard work, and hopefully we'll have some more collaborations in the future. NO PITCH CORRECTION USED!
Don't forget to rate, comment, subscribe and share this video! It would really mean a lot to us!
(there may be hidden links at the end of the video to some secret footage... ;)

How wonderful that we've finally found some young American people who have such a love for The Great American Songbook, they've re - created one of the hits of The spectacular Hi - Lo's ! We need much more of this, not only because they sound good and authentic, but also because The United States may be the only Nation on earth where its citizens are generally ignorant of their rich musical history. So this may remedy that .

Interestingly, I’m the only American in this video!
I grew up listening to the Hi Los, also Anita Kerr, and later Singers Unlimited. THere s a pure, clear musicality to a cappella. And it is lovely.
This vocal arrangement was written by the great jazz pianist/composer/arranger Claire Fischer, who wrote many of the Hi-Lo's early arrangements. He was their accompanist in the late 1950's. Beautiful chart, meticulously sung. Bravi!
young people doing a jazz standard. isn't this wonderful?? carry on guys.
I remember the Hi-Los singing this arrangement live some many years ago. You guys are spot on! Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
Thanks! Just to be clear--the audio you're hearing is our own voices!
These guys are super slick - right up there with the Hi-Lo's.
Yeah !! Thanks for the very fast editing Andrew !! Looks great...Thanks you all for your support
Wow - I'm so glad I found this. I loved the Hi-Lo's.........and these guys were absolutely terrific.
wonderful. simply wonderful. and pleasing to the eye too. thanx for sharing.
Hello Evan. I admit to being dumbfounded that those are NOT the Hi-Lo's. I'm confused that the title says "Tenderly - The Hi Lo's," rather than the name of your group, but that aside, it's a perfect and beautiful re-creation of a style of singing that I thought was pretty much lost. You guys are superbly talented. Thanks again.
the hi los were my fave group years ago and I lost track of them, but now I've found this I'm so grateful - thank you
@AndrewKesler Thanks! Now I can sleep tonight! LOL Pre-recording the audio makes total sense. The post-production work proves that you could give up music and be a hard core video editor or producer. I really love your passion and dedication - it's so refreshing to see in such an apathetic world.
Excellent job, guys!! GREAT to see the 'younger generation' still digs groups like the Hi-Lo's, Four Freshmen, Singers Unlimited....etc..... BRAVO!
How can I comment when I'm too stunned to think?
Thank you for this wonderful effort.
Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for this. Real artistry.
simply wonderful
just great!
Fabulous! Thank you soooo much for doing this!
Simply amazing! I loved it!
outstanding!!!!!
More, more. Superb.
Superb.
This was even better than your usual level of excellence!
Lush delicious harmonies guys! Love it!!
Nice! Sounds like early '50's
Wow,. this is gorgeous!
Whoa! This is incredible, guys! Both musically and visually, a masterpiece. Nice job, fellas!
The singers Unlimited! Oh yes, INDEED!
This is awesome stuff.
The 6 part Harmony stuff is very good and I love it.But whats even more amazing is what can be done with just 4 voices. this is epic
Beautiful 3
Great collaboration!!! A full CD would be great!!!
Wow, this is so great. I've been a Hi-Lo's nut for years now, and I would give anything to be able to sing it as sweetly as you guys do. I hope you guys can make more of these in the future.
It is very moving that young people of today would appreciate this vocal masterwork so well as to lipsync it and give it a new, modern twist. Pure pleasure. Loved it. Thank you for posting!
WOW! This is just too freakin' good!
Extraordinario, no dejo de escucharlo!!
All of you sound so amazing. I hope that you will continue making these international virtual quartets to put on youtube. :]
Wow! That was incredible.
Class.
Very nice
Very nice, guys!
That was very enjoyable, really good, wow!
great!! This is much more than just an a cappella
just perfect.
1:37 = this is the kind of thing I dream about at night
Awesome men, awesomee
Exceptional!!!!!
Thanks! Yeah, the title is just to identify the original performers of this arrangement, though I can see why that would be confusing. The four of us collaborate online, but we don't have our own group name. Three of us do sing in an online group called Accent -- you can check us out at youtube dot com slash accentvocal !
I seriously thought that was drawn on, but upon realizing it's real, it pretty much put the icing on the cake for ending 2010 for me. Just sayin'.
Woah! I'm glad I found this!! This is awesome guys!!! Take care! -G
Gene would have been proud. I knew Gene Puerling of the Hi Los .. Beautiful blend gents!
Thanks for any suggestions you might have; I really appreciate it. Btw I'm a fan of your work. Your multi-track acapella videos are wonderful and inspiring.
Beautiful job, fellas! Thanks ~ Fri
Wow very good harmony
Very nice, guys. Keep it up!
Greeeeeat job guys! Nice christmas present too ;-) Merci et Joyeux Noël
I have always loved the Hi-Lo's and you have done them a great honor. The multiple green screen idea worked well. In the future, you might want to add a background of a sound studio or stage. Thanks for ALL the hard work and the free MP3!
4 fresh men. 😉👍
PLEASE DO this with Gene's "Through the Years" !!!!!!!!!! The technology allows the recording quality to be far better than Hi-Lo's could have ever imagined...I saw them sing this song live in the late 80's, and it was after the concert in the green room, I was standing no more than 10 feet away... ....probably THE BEST singing I've ever heard live. THANKS for doing this! PLEASE POST MORE!
Thank you , Andrew, I went back and when I looked it said, "file size-0 bytes" so it looks like somebody took it down? Thank you, Andrew. :)
I totally agree Danny!! :)
Oh là là :-) C'est déjà difficile à faire quand tout le monde est réuni, mais à distance et virtuellement ce doit être encore pire LOL Les jeunes musicalisés, vous êtes des bonbons pour mes oreilles. Merci !
Wonderful ! And I laughed reading the tags... :D
This is pretty much the vocal style I can't figure out the harmony parts to because they're so well blended and meandering all over the place. I can usually figure out the three part harmonies to stuff like CSN, Little River Band, Fleetwood Mac and others, but not this. This is in a league all its own. Fantastic!!!
very nice, I will share it. I have a vocal group myself. Very well done. Thanx to Jean-Baptiste who transcribed the arrangement. Are any other arrangements by Clare Fischer?
Gorgeous, fellas. One of the greatest, simplest songs. Love it for a different version than my favorite (Johnny Mathis and Joe Pass). Please keep it up.
I've been a fan of The H-Lo's, for more than 40 years and as they occurred the Four Freshman, Singers Unlimited, Swingle, etc. But especially the Hi-Lo's were to me, gods. You've done a wonderful job with this recording. I'd love to see the sheet music of the parts. Is there any way I could get a transcription. Please. I play piano and sing. My son graduated from Aaron Copland School of Music in NY. We are music and especially vocal music maniacs. Thank you. Great job. I'm subscribing now. :)
Kudos to you for a truly excellent recreation of that great old recording. Enjoyed immensely. One suggestion (ah, right, here we go): A more informative title might be something like "Tenderly" a la The Hi-Lo's or "Hi-Lo's cover". Frankly, you guys nailed it so tight that some commenters here thought they were listening to a lip-sync version ! Do keep up the great work.
Yeah I'd say you have the Hi-Lo's harmony style down pat. More than exceptional I would say.
Might be even better than the originals. Would love to know how they came to do the Hi Lo songs. I was fan back in the REAL day.
R.I.P. CLARE FISCHER...
You need to do more four part harmony like this. All of your stuff is good, but this stuff is your best.
Okay, guys; you JUST screwed up my playlist strategy: music such as yours SHOULD go on my "Acapella" list, suitable for listening by ANY guest. But this song DEMANDED that it be added ONLY to "Strictly Sensual," which is not precisely geared for "public" consumption, since many of the songs on it make me cry. . . Well, I'll deal with it!
This is amazing! One of my favourite songs. Please JB you gotta do an arrangement of Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust. That would be so sick! Xxx
Awesome goatee... :D
Very nice singing!! the harmonics are great! and the video looks damn good... besides: like the beard... :-P looks serious and fits into the vid... :-P
you guys can sing to me any day, I love what you are doing, anyway you do it ,smile
Perfect! Where can I get Hi-Lo`s-arrangements such Tenderly? Even on their homepage: No arranements! Thumbs up, Andrew!

I know I'm 8 years late, but you can email Brent Fischer for the score and he might have it!
You guys sound amazing. Where can I buy that sheet music?
the guy on the right... drew his facial hair on with a sharpie.
@AndrewKesler Yes blend is very important. Even though I consider myself a strong enough solo singer, it is obvious that a great ensemble is not about its members; its about itself (as selfish as that sounds lol). Also, since I've been fathoming the idea in my head about starting my own acapella ensemble, but I don't know where to begin. I feel like I might be able to pull together arrangements of potential pieces for the group to sing, but I don't know where to begin besides that. How should I?
Hey Andrew. I'm currently attending a high school with an arts program where I am a part of both the choral (vocal) and instrumental music disciplines. For vocal music at the school I am currently only in Concert Choir where I sing tenor, but I'm thinking of becoming involved in smaller vocal ensembles. I see as you are generally a tenor with a falsetto (like myself) that you might have some tips for singing that voice part in an ensemble, specifically jazz, barbershop and more contemporary.
Do you have the written transcription for this? Thanks
i didn't recognized you at first with this beard! i liked the song, even though it was kinda slow, but it's not one of your best videos. oh, and remember the Rock Cover to Harry Potter theme song i asked you to help me with? well, the guitar sounds horrible, but the rest is AWESOME! i'll upload it in few days, if you wanna see it(i'm pretty sure you'll like it!)
lol
Come to Argentina.
Nice job guys, looked and sounded superb! The video layout and the outfits are a fine addition to the performance, totally works for me. Look forward to more from you guys. Cheers and Happy Holidays, Julien
wow pretty amazing
Where can I find the sheet music for this? It's so beautiful!
hey Andrew, would you recommend any books or accapella collection sheet music for jazz and soul style harmony? is there any book that you use for practice or something like that?
Did you lift the arrangement from the recording or did you score a score? Just curious. Either way, very impressive!
I got a lot more out of your version than out of my Hi-Lo's track. Have you thought about trying a Four Freshmen tune? Will
Andrew, So now I'm listening to it every night. Btw. The link to the mp3 seems to be broken. I went to "Download This File" and clicked on it. No Download, just an empty file. :( Wha hoppened?
Do you have all of your voices isolated, doing each part individually, by chance? I'm really curious how these are constructed. Thank you.
¡¡ GENIAL!!,ME PARECE QUE EL ARREGLO ES DE CLARE FISCHER, ¿ESTARÉ EN LO CIERTO?, SI ALGUIEN TIENE SEGURO EL DATO,SE AGRADECERÁ COMPARTIRLO.
So, Andrew... I have to know... So, everyone is in front of their chroma screen in their own studio. You send them a diagram showing where their light source should be. They all shoot in high def in the same format. Use a pitch pipe to get them started. Use a metronome, so the synch will be perfect when you edit it all together.... They must send you a disc, since their file would be too big to just email to you... Am I close?
momma always said if you ain't got nuttin' nice to say, don't say nuttin' at all. not my favorite video of yours but looking forward to your next attempt. you...rarely.. miss. except for the goattee the video did look very good so kudos on that.
