seems to be a trend with the best cult movies out there.. they all seem to have initially flopped for some reason, just for it to suddenly hit some stride and become a cult classic. iirc same thing happened with Dogma, Donnie Darko, fight club, scott pilgrim (movie), idiocracy (not my personal cult fave but many love it), and even the big lebowski (that one blows my mind bc its incredible).

Me and a friend of mine would quite literally watch this movie religiously and die laughing everytime. I'm not even lying, me and her would watch it everytime we hung out and just marvel at even the small funny moments. One of our favorites is JB singing to himself about joining the Kyle Glass Project...Maybe. And before that he tosses a dishrag trying to catch it behind him and completely fails in doing so. I still have no idea why that moment tickled our funny bones so much but we would rewind that scene endlessly and collapse in laughter. Another shout out goes to the lyric, "2 air ducts on the roof, that's what the guy was talkin' aaaashit!" Once again dead laughing.

This film is an absolute classic for me and my friends. We've had multiple sing alongs for the film and album soundtrack.

That red shower curtain with the green diamonds on it when he's singing in the football helmet... I literally have that same shower curtain right now. Weird thing for me to notice but there it is.

The gang that attacks JB on the bench is a blatant reference to A CLOCKWORK ORANGE - which is a MUST SEE.

In the last act, the rock-off with Satan, sounds like it may be an homage to Charlie Daniel's 1979 song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" where Johnny played his fiddle well enough to win a "golden fiddle" or lose his soul. I haven't heard if that might be the case but it is a classic 70s story telling song.

I think the name Tenacious D came from someone announcing a football game, talking about a team’s defense. Took me FOREVER to find out about the very short HBO series “Tenacious D” that came out before the movie. I thought the movie was a stand alone thing up until a couple years ago.
