Ten faults that need fixing on my E51 Nissan Elgrand

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I recently purchased a 2005 3.5 2WD E51 Nissan Elgrand as a replacement for my Jaguar XJ6 Limo. I paid a very reasonable price but that was in part because it had known issues. Today I give you the quick run down on those Faults and repairs required.
In future videos I will be resolving them.

Hi John. Nice interior. Looks as modern as today's cars 👍

That was one of the key draws for me Stephen. I spend more time staring at the interior of my cars than most, and a) its beautiful in my eyes. b) I struggle to get my head around what people must have thought when they saw this dashboard back in 2005 or earlier.

Hi John, an interesting vehicle, good luck on all the upgrades. Haven’t seen one of those in Canada. Looks like you’re going to have to change your intro and close to reflect the new addition. Cheers!

You're wrong about the wheel bearings, they ARE, in fact, cassette type bearing assemblies which should be quite easy to change. I had to replace my fronts and, unfortunately, the bearing cassettes were seized in the carriers and I had to get a garage to get them out! I have been told by my supplier that they do seem to wear, especially front, bearings out.One of my replacement front bearings failed after just 12 months! It's not a 'bandwidth' problem with the radios, it's because the channel spacings are different, in the UK, FM channel spacings are 25MHz, in Japan they are different. The E51's have a problem with the top Cat falling apart, getting sucked in to the engine and trashing it.It's recommended you either replace them with a plain pipe or remove the innards. I was told of this but never got 'round to it and KABOOM, engine gone! It has no effect on the engine, it's there for the more stringent emissions laws in Japan. One problem I have is that one of the magnetic ABS rings, which are built in to the bearings, is not being picked up properly which caused the ABS to activate all the time and burn out the ABS motor. I recommend you buy the workshop manual AND the after market OBD software as Nissan OBD is proprietary.

It will be interesting to see how the dent pulling goes John. I’ve tried the paintless dent removal technique with glue guns before with mixed results at best. As for the bearings, I’m shortly to crack on with the rear ones on my daily. I took it to the main ‘stealers’ just before lockdown whilst it was still in warranty with the beginnings of a drone. They kept it for 2 days only to insist that it was the OE spec Goodyear tyres droning. I told them at the time that was rubbish and that any mechanic worth their salt knows a grumbling wheel bearing when they hear it. Haven’t used the car much in the last 2 years (only 10k) but the noise now couldn’t be mistaken by even the most cloth-eared, spanner wielding numpty. I’m booked in for a recall job week after next, so going to have a go at getting them to do it out of warranty, but suspect I’ll end up lying under the car myself. Wish me luck.

Hu John . you got yourself a spaceship there... just imagine her pulling the time from the japanese official time. most remarkable! when setting up my XK8, I was so proud of her when a few seconds after engine start she accessed a satellite and displayed the correct time based on the GPS signal. I would have been kind of surprised if she would have insisted on Greenwich time! that Elgrand sure looks like a lot of fun, nice big comfortable cyl car that hardly anybody recognizes!

Im very pleased so far Wolf. Changing the front wheel bearings was the hardest id physically worked for 2 years🤣 but beyond that im very happy. Loving the odd feeling of a quick sharp handling van. It feels somehow very wrong🤔

@@ToTheGarage Hi John- a sharp handling van, and a japanese - that's really kind of unexpected ;) I've currently got a T6 Multivan as company car which is adequate in this respect, and an Amarok V6TDI in the private "fleet"- years ago, I've seen the Amarok on the test track during handling development, which was quite impressive... so the big rig is surefooted, but not by any stretch of the imagination sharp handling ;)

I want to get a Japanese import mpv I am torn between Toyota estima, alphard or elgrand I think elgrand looks most comfortable and luxurious Interior.but not sure reliability will match Toyota I would like to hear opinions Thank you

Hi S g not owned either of the `Toyota's (but driven an `estima). My Knowledge of car plants and car brands would see me agree with you. `the `Toyota will typically be the most reliable snd better screwed together car. However we are talking about 10 to 15 year old motors here and the `Nissan Elgrand has a great reliability rep with just a few known `faults including wayward fuel gauges, and steering joint knock. Most people say the Alphard is the more comfortable ride. But the counter argument is it rolls heavily and you cant feel the road. The Elgrand Handles remarkably for the type of vehicle and sounds amazing if de catted. I found the Alphard interior a bit uninspiring after the Elgrand unique dashboard. Estimas are good cars but a little smaller narrower and less covered by Grey import fans. I think the estima would feel a bit of a let down in terms of space luxury and command seating position after the Elgrand. I think most make their decision between Elgrand and Alphard based on looks. Neither is likely to disappoint (except in Mpg if you are unprepared for 27mpg real world average)

@@ToTheGarage hi.thank you for reply..regarding elgrand seats look super comfortable.as you say I think Toyota build quality and reliability Will be better.I may be biased .been a Toyota man nearly 20 years.but I think Japanese Nissan will be a different beast.from European Nissan. Basically Renault.the estima doesn’t seem to have same following as alphard. I want older shape 2002-2008

Never trust the mileage on a elgrand Mine was reversed 15 k in Japan and another 10 k when it arrived in the UK It’s easy done with a lap top . Check original Japanese documents if you have them which shows true mileage . Otherwise great but thirsty cars

Hi Richard. Jags are and will always be my favourites so no worries there. But its not a Jag channel, its a what im doing in my garage channel. (which is mostly playing with my jag😁). And im not doing any of this to build a business, so Im quite happy to make films about what I fancy, rather than worrying too much about doing the ones with the biggest audience. Stay safe my friend👍

Hello John....you certainly have a diverse interest in quasi bizarre cars....in North America we do not have the motorcoach, the tow behind mini-whatever nor that Nissan Elgrand. I could not be less interested....sadly....Please keep your primary focus on Jaguars.....its really why we are here.....
