I have a small suggestion. I think it'd be good if you have a summary where you focus just on the main factors, like accuracy, price, and connectivity... basically to make a few recommendations quickly and to the point. From my POV, I just want to know what will work with my existing setup and is a good balance between quality/accuracy and price. It's cool that you have all this data, there obviously are people that are very interested in all the details, but there's also casuals (like me) that will benefit from a "the gist of it" part in your video so we don't get overloaded with a ton of details that we don't really care about.

It is HA centric so most of them work with standard interfaces of HA such as Zigbee and BLE. It was probably too many sensors but the selection of ones we have to pick out of all seem to have issues in some form. No real best..

@@digiblurDIY Fair enough, but my point of view was more in terms of how the information is presented. There is loads of good info, but it is a bit hard to track with the jumping between graphs / device types, and it's a bit cumbersome to filter out what one is not interested in. IMO, the information will be easier to digest if the video had grouped the devices, for example by interface: BT, Zigbee, DIY sensors... And then you can have a summary of your findings at the end of each group/category. I personally came for the tests of the individual sensors as I want to make a few humidity and temp sensors myself as a hobby, so that's the parts of the video that really interested me and I could have skipped all the BT/Zigbee stuff. But still, great content and very helpful in narrowing down my search. PS Thanks for also including the stores from which you sourced the sensors, really helpful in terms of being reasonably confident what I'll get is what you tested and not just something with the same branding but performing worse.

Thanks!! It is definitely a lot of data to pour over. I appreciate your suggestion to check out the AHT21, pretty solid sensor for the price! Especially with how expensive the BME280's are now. I'll be updating the article on the website with more pictures and such later today too.

Very helpful information and great test! There are also 'humidity calibration/reference kits' available with certain salts that if you make a saturated solution of, and put that solution in a closed container, the humidity level of the air in that container is always known. For instance the the relative humidity in the air above a saturated solution of sodium chloride, kitchen salt, is 75% at room temperature. Using these kits might be helpful to get some reference values to check out performance of humidity sensors.

Love the same Aqara ones. Have 4 of them outside. Sometimes they get wet inside because of freaky rain weather. I simply remove 🔋 then dry them. Stick new 🔋 in and runs again. Does fine with high 30 C and low -5.

Good stuff as always! I have many of the Govee H5102 for indoors. Do you know if the TP ones broadcast their battery level as well? I want a AAA for the freezer but need to keep watch on battery in HA.

Not seeing that in HA itself at this time on those. I only see a full battery icon on the app. It could possibly be something that would be later added as a feature to that device in HA. I know it is there on the Inkbird freezer one as I've had one in my freezer for probably close to a year now or more.

I had been really excited about the Xaoimi sensor until seeing this comprehensive review. Not so much any more. I have serious issue with dropping >$30 for sensors. That's insanity! I'm not made of money. Another issue is the sensors that have no display and are 3x the price of one with a display. You did the hard work, but I took your data and dropped anything >$20 to appeal to the value crowd. The list shrinks down to: Inkbird IBS-TH2 , $20 Aqara Temperature Sensor, $20 Govee H5075 BT , 2-pack, $25.00 ($12.50 ea.) SwitchBot BT Display, 4-pack, $39.00 ($9.75 ea.) I have 3 flashed Xiaomi sensors connected directly to a RPi running HA, works great so far (normal indoor rooms).

Thanks so much. Exactly what I was looking for. Just basing on specs, I think Switchbot is one of the most accurate, but some people complain about the screen not working after some time.

Love my BME projects. Had one outside for several years now & it hits 100%RH. The temp needs a -2F correction for some reason. It's in open air so shouldn't have heating issues. Poked a hole (silicone it) in the freezer seal for a DS18B20 and but a Reed switch on the door. No more thawed food if the door gets hung up on a tray or food box.

I am currently facing a predicament concerning the humidity levels in my cigar boxes, which prompts me to seek guidance. Currently, I utilize the Govee H5075 for humidity monitoring, and despite recalibrating it using a 69% humidity calibration bag provided by Boveda, it consistently displays a reading of 74% within the calibration bag. This discrepancy of 1% in humidity accuracy necessitates frequent changes in humidity bags. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in identifying the appropriate sensors for accurately monitoring the temperature and humidity in my humidors. the total is 6 humidors boxes

Would have been great to hear your thoughts on the aqara TVOC sensor. I don't really need the TVOC part, but the display with the temperature and humidity is pretty nice

Did you use ESPhome or Tasmota for the DIY sensors? Ive been reading that Tasmota + BME280 can be innacurate.

I use Esphome for DIY sensors since I can change the polling and sampling.

Can you make similar video on comparison test between various pm2.5/pm10 air quality sensors available in the market ?

I can see the humidity reading being off due to the plastic enclosure and how the air makes its way to the sensor. It would be nice to know what sensor each device is using under the hood. I have a feeling a lot of the sensors will be similar to your DIY setup. I think the DIY setup just had a much better sensor-to-air interface. Also, keep in mind that these are all relative humidity measurements so temperature differences will affect the readings.

Yep. I thought about that as well depending on how they buried the sensors in the case so I did run the high humidity test for 30 min or so to really give it time to soak up some air/moisture but sadly many did not yet some of the ones in the case did. I would call that a design flaw at that point for the ones that didn't. I did try to include that on the sheet on the sensors used under the hood and found it on only a couple of them. Most if not all didn't disclose this info on their product pages.

Did you have to use multiple Bluetooth proxies to connect all the Bluetooth sensors?

Depends on what package type you need.

The BME280 is a great sensor. The DHT22 is fine, but it is much harder to use. I suspect the driver code you are using could be improved. It took me a long time to get my driver reliable and do all the recovery when the sensor hangs up. But I've had them running since long before the BME280 was available, and I've felt no need to swap them out.

It is esphome used on the latest release. It is known to not be very accurate. Many people have issues with it including one member that cost him a 10k remodel.

@@digiblurDIY Curious. I have two of these in service and they are rock-solid. Both are esphome. I have other sensors, including a store-bought weather station and the accuracy of the DHT22 sensors is a match for all of them. Makes me wonder if there may be environmental reasons for the dodgy behaviour that some have experienced? I dunno, may EMR or EMF from other sources? I did have to use the following line in my ESPHome yaml to get it to work properly... "model: DHT22_TYPE2"

Thanks very much. Nice testing. I have 2 of the Aqara WSDCGQ11LM (zigbee) and they suck. I have other Aqara zigbee devices and they are fine. The temp/hum sensors are not so good at all. They will just drop off. I had them both just 4 feet from a zigbee light bulb that is also a repeater. Fine for a couple of days and one or the other will drop off. I stated my findings in my review on amazon. They reached out to me and and asked some question. They went on about no official support when not using their hub. I explained that again, the other sensors are working and that zigbee 3.0 is a standard. Then no more communications. A couple of months ago, I installed tasmota on a D1 mini to monitor my freezer until I find something that will work properly with a battery.

Yes, that's been a problem with their old non 3.0 spec sensors for a quite a while. They are sticky and don't want to reroute and will just fall off the network. Seen it quite a bit. Sadly it has had me shy away from any of their sensors now as my mind kind of groups them together. Especially if another vendor has the same sensor. Like a door sensor or some other common device.

@@digiblurDIY @andymok7945 I have a ton of Aqara sensors, and use the temp/hum in my bathrooms with great success to control the fan on/off. Not really tested their accuracy, but have worked fine for me. As for dropping off... with Z2M they are fine (issues I though was they don't follow the zigbee standards, so any Aquara that were routers were really the issue). I also solve some stability issues be making sure my WiFi wasn't anywhere near the zigbee channel they use, been great ever since. Maybe once a year one (out of dozens) drops off and I have to just put controller in pair mode, press the button on the device (once to just wake it) and it reconnects fine.

accurate enough for my purposes. using high quality batteries I find fixes their "flaky" connection. I also do not have any other off brand routers (only routers are flashed with z2m)@@NiNjaTurtLe697

Most didn't disclose the exact sensor model they used, some of them mentioned the brand or country origin and that was about it.

That was the longest 10 minute video I've seen in a long time. After I edit it down in my brain, there's a lot of value but you really need to self-edit and land the plane.

That's why I provided the article/graphs stuff before hand.

my sensor box (temp, hum, light + PIR) costs me around 15$ with the box, sensors, ESP32 and battery, they stay on battery for almost a year (LiPo 500mAh) and for those that are close to window or outside small solar panel makes them unbeatable. I put around 20 around the house - I would probably got bankrupt for 70 per piece ;-) the most important part for DIY is: let them SLEEP. Otherwise their measurements are highly impacted by the MCU getting hot as well as the sensor itself gets warmer if powered on always. So I ended up with 0.2s work and 180s sleep - temperature cannot get higher within 0.2s

Absolutely! This is why picked ESPHome for the DIY test so I could control the polling time so they were not constantly getting hit. The BME280 is known to self heat in this case if you poll it too often.

My Bluetooth proxy based devices go unavailable regularly. Tried everything to get them to be reliable. Just never able to get it there.... Right now I'm using the inkbird th... But they go unavailable at least once an hour.

@@digiblurDIY yep. Tried the m5 atom lite, olimex poe, a few others. Arduino and esp-idf... Doesn't seem to matter. They work immediately and I get the sensors going unavailable regularly throughout the day.

Best is purely subjective and based on the project.

The problem I have is that all the xiaomi mijia sensors I have don't agree with each other while being in the same spot, they all give different values.

Even though the temperature display update is close to realtime, how many of these actually give a useful historic chart of real time temperature ? Most Tuya based devices only update the chart data every hour, which is really useless as many events can occur in an hour but never be noticed.

I didn't test wifi Tuya cloud ones luckily. Most of these were local and updated instantly as they changed.

@@digiblurDIY the Tuya ones update rapidly on the local display and are also logged on the Tuya cloud server. However there seems to be no implementation by manufacturers using Tuya to offer a historic chart with more real time data. Only every hour logging. A waste of charting.

I am sorry but there is a logical flaw here. without reference how would you know how they perform? you just put random numbers next to each other. you should compare them to a standard, to a device that is 100% accurate. I appreciate the lots of devices and the work you put into the video, but I think this is kind of pointless
