Telluride Via Ferrata - Ashley FREAKS out!

Ойын-сауық

We headed to Telluride Colorado to check out the Via Ferrata. The Via Ferrata precariously traverses rock faces up to 600 feet above the ground below, exhilaratingly exposed in sections that would be impassable without the steel cables and scattered steel holds along the way. I had done the climb once before but this was Ashley's first time. Having a bit of climbing experience and a healthy fear of heights I thought this would be an awesome challenge and experience for her. I definitely did not expect her to freak out as much as she did. All in all it made for an incredible day and she was very happy she accomplished it.
Please note: This edit is not a guide or a recommendation that you should attempt this climb. Only experienced climbers should attempt and I highly recommend hiring a guide.

There weren't any sections on this via ferrata we felt warranted more. If we had any vertical sections like those in Europe we would have definitely used the special gear.

@@AndrewMuse Special gear aside, it's definitely better to have a dynamic PAS vs a static one when there's any risk of falling on it unloaded. Those static PAS's are more for anchoring into multi-pitch / single pitch anchors, that shock load (While it might still hold you) would be super uncomfortable. A fall can happen at any point, for any reason - a dynamic PAS is a great alternative to make things a bit safer and more comfortable. You almost rolled your ankle in the video, so you definitely know random stuff like that happens, and making things a bit safer (For the same price, since dynamic PAS's aren't really more expensive) is well worth the effort.

WTF using a dyneema daisychain for vF?!?!? I'm sure she'd be even more scared if she realised daisychains are only like 2kN rated for static loads only. A certified via Ferrata set can be had for less than £50, WHY RISK IT??? It probably cost you more in fuel to drive to CO and your camera equipment is definitely worth more than this. Classic example of the video being worth more than a life... SERIOUSLY people, if you want to do this route, get a proper vF set. Don't make one up from any old climbing tat you may have lying around. You can easily overload slings etc in a fall, please don't risk it, just buy the correct gear, you will then have the incentive to look up other routes and go do them too safely. Stay safe all, have fun. Lots of love from The UK.

Thank you for the concerns Matt and for pointing that out for everyone watching, I truly appreciate it! The Telluride Via Ferrata doesn't have any vertical sections like in Europe, it's just a traverse. I had done it before on multiple occasions and felt confident we wouldn't need anything other than what we took. That being said, if anyone is looking to do it they do sell the kits in climbing stores in town and they recommend hiring a guide to go across.

@@AndrewMuse good to hear it's just a traverse, but even the in a fall you are introducing a static shock to the gear possibly factor 1 towards factor 2. Please check out the Edelrid video on Via Ferrata kit, the gap between the pigtails can make a fall factor 5!!! 😳 Something you'd never encounter sport climbing because of the rope stretch. Criticism aside, it does look a great route and it's a nice video. 👍 Edelrid video kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2mrm62klJDMYto.html

Well… I guess most people told you aleady in the comment section here. But you should NEVER use slings as your main fall arest. They will snap like a lace if you fall in them. They are realy strong, but not made for dynamic loads. Even standing with your harness at the same hight as the cable will be fatal. Please always use a VF set, they arent that expensive. And use the sling as “resting line”. Clip them when your getting tired, just slowly sit in them and hang in your harnes to rest. Also keep the VF set cliped in.

what kinda via ferrata sets are those? it looks like just a rope with thos carabiners attached. There's a video on youtube of a german alp club section that depicts what exactly happens if you fall into those kinds of ropes.... I hope I'm mistaking here, if not, this is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. Taking a beginner on a C or D rated via ferrata without a proper set.....

@@AndrewMuse Ok I just scrolled down a bit and found your answer. Just my two cents though: I've seen 3 falls in via ferratas so far and two of them were on non-vertical traversy sections, as on the vertical stuff people tend to be much more "careful". The tests of the german alpine club showed that normal climbing ropes tend to shear right off and thear in falls where you are above the anchor point (which in via ferratas you always are), as in climbing you have tons of length in the rope (40-50 m minimum) which helps to distribute the weight of the fall by allowing the rope to stretch on impact. Onvia ferratas, the rope's much shorter and thus tends to strip/shear off during falls usually right where the carabiner connects. In static ropes it's even much worse. But as you already said, I was just concerned for your and other viewers safety. So props to you for taking my quite harsh comment so nicely! :)
