See the list of Bird Jones telescopes here. Thanks to Jon for this. A link to his blog on the subject is here along with his buying guide.

What we have done here is tried to put together some good beginner scopes that are functional and easy to use under $100 and under $300. We have also provided a list of the most common bird jones telescopes which is a form of newtonian you should avoid buying. We have been hesitant to make a list like this because a lot of it is subjective and we don't want to pretend to be the "know it all" people on the suject. This is a list of vfiable scopes from several manufacturers that are good to start with. There are more on the market, but this will provide a good starting point.

The happy 100 dollar medium is the Celestron Powerseeker 114eq. Genuine newtonian, long focal length, and craps on the 127mm bird jones counterpart

You can see stuff with them, but they basically create their own light pollution, so when you start taking pictures of nebulae to registax, you will have issues chasing colors. Even if your intention is to drag it out of the garage a couple times a year, then your money is still not well spent on the focal length bird-jones offers, because you will never get it aligned properly! Unfortunately, theyre popularity outweighs their flaws, and people end up with something they cant use very quickly
