Tekton Flex Head Ratcheting Wrenches VS Gearwrench, Craftsman, Kobalt, Pittsburgh

This video is a comparison of my tekton flex head ratcheting wrenches vs gear wrench, kobalt, craftsman, and Pittsburgh. I know there are other quality ratcheting wrenches on the market but these brands were the most accessible to me. This videos my honest opinion and is in no way intended to persuade someone to purchase one brand over another.

Great comparison. I have a lot of the old Craftsman as well. My go too for wrenches has been Gearwrench. Tekton is a new brand to me, but really intrigued. As a professional home owner and want to be DIYer, I enjoy having the best value tools. Again... Thank you for what you do.

I've got Craftsman, Husky, Milwaukee and a few off brand sets (Stanley, etc) for random places (camper, fishing boat, etc) and all sorts of wrenches...but it wasn't until recently I started debating about getting myself a decent set of ratcheting wrenches. My biggest delay in selecting a set was durability, so...long story short, I really appreciate you taking the time to torture test a few brands and I'll be looking forward to your video!

I ended up with a set of Tekton metric long flex ratcheting double box-ended wrenches. I really like that they are 6-point, and they are a good addition (along with other types) to a basic set of combination wrenches. Keep up with the videos, you're doing a great job. I really enjoy watching them and hearing your reasoning as you make your choices. Do consider getting a wireless lavalier mic though, like a Rode Go or some such. It will take the technical quality of your videos up a notch.

How do you like the long flex? I didn’t get those because I was worried I’d be limited since they are longer but I bet the added leverage is nice. After your last comment about the audio I paid more attention and you’re totally right. As I move around the camera it’s changing the audio and volume in one ear over the other. I’ll definitely try to make this better in upcoming videos.

@@projectkarr The mic suggestion was meant in a totally constructive and encouraging manner, of course. I think having some stubbies and long wrenches compliment a standard set of combos, and I also was looking for some ratcheting wrenches, and so I decided to kill two birds with one stone and get the long flex ratchets. The extra length can come in handy when I have the room and need a little more leverage, but I am also careful not to put too much torque on them, since they are ratcheting wrenches and will never be as strong as solid wrenches.

@@rogerhassell3212 ya totally, I appreciate the feedback because I want to continue to improve the quality of my videos. I did have a pin shear on my 19mm flex head but that was after more than twice the torque I could put on by hand. Thankfully a new one is already on the way.

I have dealt with support for replacement of multiple of my ratcheting wrenches and am overall very disappointed with the newer releases. I no longer have any interest in Gearwrench is they continue down this path of cheaply made tools.

Thanks for the advice. Was not tracking Tekton wrenches so will give them some consideration. Was all set to buy several sets of Gear Wrench ratcheting combos last night when I read the negative comments regarding the new Gear Wrenches. Your video supports those comments. I totally agree about Craftsman. I was brought up using Craftsman. My father's Craftsman socket wrench from the 60's is better than my Craftsman socket wrenches from the 90's. The new Craftsman is a tasteless joke. So disappointed. They are not even in my consideration anymore. Thanks again for the advice on Tekton. I would like to know your opinion on the ICON brand from Harbor Freight. I'm considering their stubby flex-heads.

As far as the Husky/HD situation, you can obviously have the set shipped to your local store for pick up. Then all you have to do is warranty the single Wrench, which I'm sure they have on the shelves. I know they have the single wrenches at two of my local stores.

Ya I was trying to draw a line somewhere since ordering online would have opened the door to tons of other brands. Depending on how this channel goes, I hope to have some comparisons in the future using more brands. And surprisingly I went to 3 Home Depot’s and I couldn’t even find a single individual flex ratcheting wrench. They had quite a few normal ratcheting wrenches, but no flex. Not sure if that’s because they aren’t as popular or because they sell out quickly.

If you don't have a full set of 6 point wrenches, one advantage would be being able to get a 6 point on both sides (assuming different sizes) where with the double box you might not have that choice. This is assuming you needed less space above the nut or bolt where a socket wouldn't fit. Maybe I don't run into this every day, but it's nice when you do. A set of 6 point combination wrenches would be nice, sometimes I need a thin 6 point to avoid stripping a fastener.

I’m a long time Tekton fan. Have slowly added more and more over the years. I saw on their website that they’ve made a decision to back away from the ratcheting wrench market for the time being. This doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in the other Tekton gear I’ve accumulated. The warranty is only as viable as the company itself. Tekton not being able to maintain a line with their supply chain has me scratching my head.

Thanks to you I bought the tekton master 1/2" and 3/8" sets (still saving up for that 1/4") and the wrench set. It's interesting for me because I'm building up my tool set for when I move to Japan, so if I have to avoid getting too much excess, but missing anything it'll be prettu hard (and very expensive) to get more. I appreciated this video and how the audio was more level throughout it. As a constructive note, this video didn't seem to be quite as information rich (just containing new information) though, as an establishing video for your future torture test one I think it's great. Additionally, have you seen those Wera screwdrivers? I don't know if you use screwdrivers as much, but I end up using them all the time and that weird looking handle is actually my favorite screwdriver handle design by far. I could go on about it, but if you haven't tried them, they're worth checking out. (And if you want more info on screwdrivers, I could go on and on. :P)

See I was struggling with the balance of information on the Tekton wrenches and comparing them to others without making a 30 minute video haha. I’ll try to make sure it stays information rich in future videos. I have actually seen those screwdrivers before and I like the design of the grip. It might look a little strange but you can tell it will allow you to put a ton of torque.

Those kobalts in your video are 90 tooth vs the tekton 72 tooth, both made in Tawain now so build quality is the same from what I have heard.

That may be the case with their ratcheting wrenches, but most Kobalt tools are way lower quality than Tekton. Also, with Kobalt you will not get a complete set. And it’s a fact that the warranty with Kobalt is absolutely terrible. I quit buying their stuff and now mostly buy Tekton, Gearwrench, and other entry level professional brands.

Nice comparison. Just a thought on the truck brands. I have been in the business for about 40 years and the truck brands are overpriced. Add to that the difficulty at times with warranty if you don't own a shop and these secondary brands are relevant. I would compare these to the truck brands, especially Tekton. That is really the whole point right? Can you find quality tools at a fair price that will stand up to heavy use? I think Tekton, Sunexx, Grey Products, and some GearWrench brands do hold up.

I know this is a old video but a few comments on the tools. Gear Wrench seems to have more and more issues with quality. I'm not sure if it is a different manufacturer or possibly production speed increase, have no clue. Tekton is doing very well, I continue to be impressed and own some. They continue to add more in house tools, meaning American made. Plus the best and easiest warranty on the market. Kobalt is not expanding their tool line at all it seems. Craftsman is just floundering along. Milwaukee is killing it lately. I just watched a video testing strength on flex head ratcheting wrenches. His torque meter only went to 150 ft lbs but it never even strained. Their wrenches, both styles, feel great in hand, excellent quality although a little more expensive is literally pushing tool truck level. Capri tools isn't bad but their warranty sucks, well, how you have to use it anyway. Koken has their new Z series ratchets. I have ordered a couple. Flex 1/4 long handle and a 3/8 on a 1/4 frame flex short. Pretty pricey but dang they are sweet. The quality and smoothness is incredible. Anyway, great video. Keep up the great work.

Plenty of tool truck shoppers are comparing these brands to tool truck brands. Same warranties, similar quality, but half or quarter of the price. Just look at what off the shelf cordless tools from home depot or lowes which are fractions of the price, did to the tool truck pneumatic tools industry. You'd be a fool not to consider these for professional use. Best tech I ever knew when I was in the industry made a great living off a Husky brand tool box filled with Harbor freight, Husky, tekton and craftsman tools.. and this was nearly 10 years ago!!

I assume the Tekton and the Kobalt wrenches are from the same factory. They just stamp different names. There was a Tekton facebook group Q&A a couple of months ago and their comment was that even though sometimes their tools look identical to others, it doesn't mean they are the same. Their manufacturing standards and specifications differ from others. I don't know whether that is true or not but I do know that I'm on the market for some ratcheting wrenches and I got some decent information from this video. I'll be keeping my eye on those Kobalt ones too. If there's a deal on them, I think they are worth buying.

Only problem with Tekton is you can’t get any ratcheting wrenches right now, and they don’t have the option for being reversible without flipping the wrench . I have some of their sockets and ratchets and they’ve been serving me well.

I believe your older Gearwrench wrenches are Taiwan made. The newer ones are made in China. There is a clear quality difference.

False the 120xps are made in Taiwan as well.

@@marcowens7234 so the 120's are the outlier. The rest are made in China. Since none of the wrenches compared were 120xps, the statement above holds true.

Forums are showing that people measure gear wrench with calipers and they have looser spec. Doesn't mean every wrench is out of spec. But some sockets are.

I really like my set of Mac six point precision torque flex head combo wrenches. Probably just a little nicer than the tekton.

I'm disappointed with Craftsman as well. I heard from a few people the Lowes won't warranty the older Craftsman only the tools they sell. I hope it's not true since I have a lot of old made in the USA Craftsman

I’m pretty sure they will still warrantee it out but you’re going to get a made in China replacement unfortunately.
