I recently got into it. I tried some characters here and there and was getting destroyed in Casual and Ranked. Until I was reintroduced to King (I used to play Tekken 2 with my dad). @@oshiko35P lol people who pass the beginner barrier are fewer than people think, tekken difficulty is not for everyone. And when you sit on intermediate you just want to polish your game on everything you can, starting with not falling again on mecanics abusable by beginners like throws, at least the basics. Specially against King because knowing how to break throws is half the match. Not saying that a yellow ranker is gonna break 10/10 throws (not counting the large amount of legacy players smurfs of course) but is gonna be increasingly difficult as he climbs, so he shouldn't rely on that too much.

I truly believe to get good at Tekken you need to have been playing - AT LEAST - the version before. I started at the exact tail end of T6, moved on to TT2......and just sucked for like the whole time TT2 was out 🤣, because I had to learn all the movesets and matchups in a game where you need to be pretty good with two characters. When T7 came out, and they changed the mechanics to make it a little easier for newer players, I was finally competent and understood the way the game had to be played. It was a steep AF learning curve, but I can't go back to Street Fighter or 2D after getting into Tekken.

Just rewatched his tekken stream from yesterday and it was fun to seeing the learning process. I played tekken casually with friends growing up but I tried to pick up Tekken 7 a month ago and every online match something new is learned. It is pretty fun when the netcode is good.
I think one of the most fun things about Tekken when you become more comfortable is judging wall distance and utilizing unorthodox wall carry options/setups at the wall. Like guides will show you what your wall carry options are and your wall combos, but sometimes using an uncommon option or tech traps is super fun when you can make it work. Getting off the ground and knowing what to do at the wall in Tekken are their own worlds to learn.
Thanks or being awesome Max, best of wishes to you and yours! ♥

But after playing tekken 7 story mode and messing with training a bit I was already ready to play online and wasn't just getting destroyed. It's learning curve is perfect for how hard the game is.
Just think of 8 way run in soul caliber but use that for every button press and then when things feel good make combos up that work for you and then you'll just regularly use them in matches . I jumped back on in t5 Dr in the arcade and ever since its been buttery

Been playing Tekken literally my entire 27 year life, it’s still fun learning new characters.
I remember enjoying Tekken 7, learning the basic mechanics of the system, picking up a few flashy combos, going back and forth with some friends. all in all a great time. Then another friend started playing King, and no matter how long I tried I just could not wrap my head around spotting which grabs required which buttons to tech. I got broken by RDC. I hope tekken 8 is as fun as tekken 7 but with simpler grab tech so smooth brains like myself can enjoy it.

definitely gonna be watching max learn Tekken! edit: took me a good 3 years to be decent at the game. still struggle with match up knowledge as I hate delving into the practice mode vortex.
Great video Max! I've got some small tips for you regarding Tekken. The most important things in tekken are: Punishment, Movement, Wiff punishment and Mathcup knowledge. (duh) Knowing how to punish things correctly will automatically give you high Ranking online, but this needs frame knowledge and MU knowledge. The "easy" way to practice punishment in Tekken , is to go to the punishment traning in practice mode. Sidestepping Choosing to sidestep/Swalk in neutral can sometimes be more rewarding than keep out moves . Regarding when to sidestep, you can side-step block (tap up/down then quickly hold back) from -+0 to -4 frames, example if you do a df1 on a blocking opponent, which is usually -3 on block, You can side-step block from this situation, people will sometimes try to retaliate with a fast move, ex jab in this situation, but the jab will wiff because you are side stepping, and fast moves are usually super linear, so this gives you the opportunity to wiff punish fast retaliation with your own i10 to i15 frame punish, depending on the retaliation move. You can also sidewalk (double tap up/down then hold) in this situation to create a bigger wiff , but is a bit more risky because you are not blocking. When you are in range of -+0 to -4 frames you can do Side step block, sidewalk or backdash, to create space to make your opponent wiff. In some certain matchups, you will want to do Side step duck (tap up/down then hold db), or backdash duck (b,b, db). This shit goes deep bro. Also be careful in ranked, some might try to mash buttons when they are at -6 to -9 disadvantage, if you have trouble against random button mashing, check them with a df1 to keep them honest. I hope this helps, i apologize if it was too much info, this is Tekken. Looking forward to see more of your Tekken journey! Cheers Bro.

A side note: db2 to f1+2 is a fun setup :), and d2 is an amazing low poke, it can't be parried beacuse its a weapon, but is -15 on block, if your d2 gets blocket often use db3 instead.
"Ignore that I called him Cloud." No, sir, I don't think I'll do that.
I'm loving these Tekken Tag soundtracks in the back, assuming I'm not mistaken.
Finally MAX! Let’s GOO
Ive been playing tekken since 3 but got really into it when 4 came out and at base level its still the same game that it was 30 years ago but because of how complex it has become youre forced to actually learn and "train" if you wanna even be decently good which I appreciate because it keeps the button mashers away. But ive noticed that a seasoned veteran like myself who knows certain combos but the the lengthy strings and advanced movement skills can still have an advantage on hardcore tekken gamers because they expect to be fighting somene of that same caliber and expect them to know the advanced skills and when they dont it throws them off and you get the potential win
Is not while rising, is while standing. WR is for while running moves. Nice to see you back to Tekken dude 🔥

You're right, it doesn't have to be hard to learn, but somehow Tekken saw steady growth for years despite it being hostile to new players. They show you 8 different stats that you don't care about, but they won't put characters' names on the screen in online multiplayer, so you can't even internalize which anime lady it was that beat you. There's no tutorial, and I had to figure out that highs/lows work the opposite of how they work in most fighting games I play from a load screen tip. Frame data is sold separately, and the netcode sucks. I'm not sure how this game got the following it did with this many roadblocks in the way; personally, I put it down.

I’m like 50 hours into my first Tekken 7 experience and almost all of those hours was spent studying Yoshimitsu and playing against one or two of my friends, lol. Tried matchmaking for the first time and got up to 3rd dan but eventually went back down to 1st; you bet I rematched every opponent no matter how much better they were than me! I'm in the same boat as Max, actually it's been even longer since I've been active in Tekken... not since T6 when it was released. I bought this on Steam during the height of the pandemic then bought the definitive edition this year. I still remember a few of my bnb combos with Nina and Julia but I'm overall rusty as hell. And so many new characters to choose from, crazy overwhelming but nice nonetheless! Lidia dope as hell

what's best in playing Tekken is if you think you forgot a character or there is a character you haven't play in a very long time but have tried to memorized their movesets, your muscle memory kicks in like Ultra Instinct.

I didn't really get too much into Tekken 7 aside from playing with friends casually. I mostly played Lars cuz he seemed like a cool character I wanted to play. Though recently I've been getting into Pokken Tournament and while that's a little more simplified but unique Tekken in a way I seem to enjoy it more what with the Pokemon aspects thrown into the formula with it's gameplay

I literally bought tekken a couple of weeks ago on sale. Can’t decide on a damn main . Last one I played was t3 as a kid just mashing buttons. I would use king, hwo, law, or eddy (they all seemed cool to me as a kid). But now it’s like ohhh kazuya is dope, jin actually isn’t a tool, king with a badass outfit? AK it is, shit eddy is still dope, black kung fu sign me up, huh.. Paul isn’t a tool either. Really can’t decide on a single one 😂 they all look cool, and I like all their play styles. I’m leaning towards kazuya, jin, eddy and AK the most though. Problem is I’m just stuck in training mode bouncing between them not really learning a single character that well yet 😂

That can be a real problem with most fighting games I get into as well. I'll wind up never settling in on a main so it takes me forever to establish good fundamentals, the muscle memory for combos and punishes, match-up knowledge, etc with any one of them. Luckily with Tekken I have stuck with Miguel for a good while now along with both of the Kings because I love hybrid striker/grappler characters.
Tekken can be fun when playing a friend But i really cannot wrap my head around it I mastered street fighter and pretty good at guilty gear but that doesn't help me one bit in tekken maybe with akuma fadc combos but that's pretty much it Everything in it from whiff punishing to combos to even just blocking its very daunting The neutral is veryyy diffrent too

Yea they’re definitely two different skill sets. For example, I grew up playing Tekken and coming from 3D, Street Fighter is 10x harder for me. Korean backdashing, wavedashing, and electrics? Wayyy easier for me to do than the basic links and combos in SF. The timing feels insane, and the air dashing in Guilty Gear felt so alien to me as well. I’ve been making the effort to learn them tho. I hope once Tekken 8 comes around you give it another try! It can be extremely rewarding and there’s gonna be a huge wave of new players to learn with too.

Usually, when I gotta look at frame data, i groan. Not with Tekken though. The frame data seemed interesting. I think it has to do with the number. The moves sound like you can grasp the unsafeness with a 56 frame move compared to a 10 frame

Tekken is a lot slower paced than most other fighters, moves often has so much readability and motion to it. It's easier to learn each move and how to pace around it compared to games like Skullgirls or Touhou 12.3 (i picked those games since those are the games currently on the top of my head, and what i played mainly aside from Tekken). Fights in Tekken often feels like a flow you can just mentally read which will and which won't hit you in the moment.
