While Heihachi is the one who officially wins the tournament, Jin's ending is actually the canonical ending. He ends up breaking free of Heihachi's chained capture and defeats both Kazuya (who avoided being captured) and Heihachi. He then attempts to kill the latter before being stopped by a vision of his mother and he reluctantly decides to spare Heihachi's life.

I always get the impression Kazuya was supposed to win (makes more sense given how Kaz just force pushes Heihachi across the room before fighting Jin) but they changed their mind and retconned it because they wanted Jinpachi to take over as the villain for 5.

I've been playing Tekken since 1995 in the arcades as a teen. T4 is my favorite in the series. I was in my first 4 years of service in the Marines when this was released. The commanding General of 29 palms, CA was a huge Tekken fan and ordered an arcade cabinet to be put in the junior Marines club on base. We used to stay up all night on weekends having tournaments on that arcade machine. Some of which I won. That game and those tournaments got me through the rough first four years of military service. I went career and retired honorably. But easily, my most fond memories of service came from those long nights in the junior Marines club on that game.

I had some xp with Motion Capture for video games and gotta admit even though Namco has always created a seriously fluid and accurate movement animations and overall choreography for Tekkens in the past, (I think they were using MoCap before it was industry standard) They outdid themselves with T8. You almost saw me as Leon in these new Resident Evil games :)

I always ignored tekken. I played king of fighters, all the marvel cross crossovers, street fighter. But never tekken. One day i showed up to the arcade at my local mall and there was a tekken 4 arcade next to the marvel vs Capcom 2 where i spent hundreds of hours. I kept looking over to tekken 4. The intro, the visuals, music, realistic characters in the character select screen (for it time). All that lured me to it, popped in th coins and i was hooked. I stopped at gamestop on my way home to purchase the game. I popped it in my ps4 and played it for 14 hours strait. My friends got into it too, so we had small competitions every weekend, after a week of practicing with our favorite characters. Years later tekken 5 was released, by that time i was in my senior year and took tekken 5 as seriously. I practiced every day for 8 hours. Took on local players, traveled to other counties to play against some of the best players in the area. travel to Austin, Dallas, just to find better players to learn from. I made between 300 to 400 $ a week, school was pretty much a choir by then. When T6 rolled around, i was had a different mindset. Gf ,car payments, and less friends since since they also had priorities. haven't played a tekken game in decades, but i still have the memories and im so grateful that i gave tekken 4 a chance. This game chaged my life

Great review as always! 👍 I too remember playing Tekken4 back then and finding it's new mechanics a bit weird. One new thing you didn't mention was the new "turn enemy around" move which replaced one of the button combos for throwing. That confused me so much and I Iost a lot of matches by turning myself against the wall.😅

Missed this video on release! I will remind you again that for Tekken 5, review PS2 version separately, it's the only one with all the modes later versions cut. Dark Resurrection deserves a separate video with how PSP and PS3 versions are different (somehow, PSP is better feature-wise, like you actually see customization items instead of... guessing).

Tekken 4 is like the Angel of Darkness of Tekken. It's not considered the greatest in gameplay, but it's story and aesthetic makes it a classic. ...Way better than Tekken 8 though. 🤮

One of the main reasons I'm always coming back to this game, sure the roster/character variety wasn't the best but maaan, that atmosphere... This game had that dark, sinister, underground rock vibe that so many games from the early 2000's used so well. Also this force mode was a damn good challenge

They went hard on cutting old clones in this one, hence no Jack-4 as he shared moves with bears, no Anna like in arcade version of T3, etc. Then they added actual complete clones with 100% same moveset, like Miharu or Christie. What it also has is costume/hairstyle variety, it's the first time Paul doesn't look the same!

Tekken 4 is such a mixed but generally positive bag for me tbh. Like you, I remember seeing it in the arcade and being blown away by the graphics and quickly got it for our PS2 and was immersed into it quite a lot. I do agree though that it felt very awkward compared to Tekken Tag 1 but honestly I did adapt to it rather quickly because I was playing the game so much up until we got Soul Calibur 2 and that game took my attention away from it 😅 Anyway while I still preferred the quicker movement of Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag 1 and would often go back to them, I still had fondness for Tekken 4 and it still felt like a true progression of the series and I much appreciate the risks they took with this game with the deeper story telling that made you care for most of the characters and the experimentation with having more tangible environment design like that of Dead or Alive 2 that I'm sure was an inspiration for it. As far as characters, it did suck how some were cut, especially Anna where it felt weird not to see her but I think that having a smaller cast helped give more of the characters focused immersion into their narratives. As far as newcomers, all 3 felt like natural Tekken characters though I feel you on Marduk, he was both scary and a gross person so I hardly ever touched him neither lol. And Christie was a cute design though I didn't have that "attention" on her, that "attention" was focused on King and Paul (And yes I said that, they were damn fine😏) but overall all the character designs were on top of their game. I'm surprised that you didn't like Hwoarang, I thought he looked great with the long hair and I liked his take on his military uniform tbh 😅 And hey if Christie can have her ta-tas out, who says that Heiachi can't have his cakes out? He was making a statement! All in good jokes aside but yeah, that fundoshi outfit of his was definitely something (very memorable), that's for sure LOL. I agree that while the music wasn't as great as previous Tekken games, the soundtrack was still pretty great and fit the game's tone & atmosphere for sure. I especiallly loved the prologue music, I would get chills every time I heard it (still do tbh lol). And as for Tekken Force Mode, I honestly did like the mode but there's no denying that it was hard as f*ck and could be frustrating to play through. The concept was there and as a kid, I did get immersed in it but I also admit that during that time, I would always lose in the jungle stage until I got a little older and managed to get to the Corridor stage. I only ever managed to beat that mode with Lei Wulong because I kept spamming his slide kick to high kick combo. And I'm pretty sure I also beat it with Fox one time as well but honestly it's been so long. Point is, I get why you didn't enjoy the mode even though I personally didn't mind it myself and was glad they expanded upon the gameplay formula in Tekken 6. Overall Tekken 4 was a necessary game, it took a risk and took a chance changing up the formula that sure, may have been hit/miss but it's still respectable because it gave players a new experience that felt unique (for Tekken) and part of the fun of gaming is trying new things while still retaining the things that make it what it is. The story-telling was especially nice here, arguably Tekken's peak of story before it started to go absolutely downhill come Tekken 5, at least imo. Anyway awesome review!

i did skipp TTT since it was not "a new tekken" so i immediatly started with 4 and tbh... i liked it way more than 5 or 6. The story part was just awesome for me and i didn't had anything againts the mechanics. Also Heihachi at least wasn't as cheap as final boss than in Tekken 5 or 6 (by the way: i did play Tekken 3 in London SEGAWORLD around 2000 when we had our school trip and i did made it into the top with KING back then xD)

I rented this from Blockbuster Video back in 2002, quickly unlocked characters and beat Tekken Force before I had to return it. I liked the connected stories and endings as it was new for Tekken. I found the game to feel subdued and dialed back in some ways. The music never got stuck in my head unlike the previous games. I can see Namco wanted it to be a bit more realistic but I think it came at the cost of what made Tekken great. The biggest problem was the fact that a year later, Soul Calibur II came out to consoles which blew Tekken 4 out of the way as it had far better single player content and unlockables.

This game is amazing! Best fighting game atmosphere out there imo (second to MK Deception). Most reason why people disliked it was because of the smaller roster being a huge let down. They should’ve added Jack, Anna and Bruce to make it feel complete.

Tekken 4 and 5 are my favourite Tekken games of the Franchise. ☯️ By the way Tekken 4 had the best story and atmosphere no doubt. Also my favourite Tekken Intros of the series are 4 and 5. Especially Tekken 4, developers did a lot of things incredibly right, most storylines were incredibly cool and the atmosphere and seriousness was just on a another level. I don't think most would disagree that Tekken 4 had a great"everything-except-the-fighting" to it. Great and Epic soundtracks, unique character designs, good individual stories, and an interesting main Mishima arc revival. The thing is that it's still a fighting game and no matter how great everything else is, if the fighting bit is flawed it'll overshadow the positives. Tekken 4 is sourly the most unique and underrated (mostly because of the choices that hindered the competitive scene) but it is my favorite Tekken to date, because of the very seriousness Vibes of the Story aspects perspective. The seriousness atmosphere of Tekken 4 it's on another level in my opinion. The soundtrack is what gets me the most next to the game's atmosphere. With soundtracks like: Fetus(Prologue), Authentic Sky, Unihabited(Mall Area) Didgerhythm(Jungle Area) Touch and Go(Airport Area) and Kitsch(Beach Area) and The Inner Shrine(Hon-Maru Temple) and others soundtracks, For me Tekken 4 remains even in these days the most Unique Tekken game of the series. ☯️ 🤷🏻‍♂️

I kinda regret not having played Tekken 4 on arcade. I thought it was way too different than Tekken 3, since there were obstacles, walls and slopes in the newer game and such features were absent in the older game. And also, at that time, I liked 2D fighting games better.
