Teenage Dream - the greatest pop era ever?

Музыка

In 2010 Katy Perry dropped her multi-million selling second album, Teenage Dream, creating one of the greatest pop eras ever. So just how did Katy pull off such a masterstroke? Who did she really write ‘the One That Got Away’ about? What was California Girls inspired by? What were some of the lyrics rejected for the title track? What Rihanna song could’ve ended up on the album? Who were the producers Katy was was supposed to work with on the record but never got around to? And who was the music for ET originally planned for? This mini-documentary explores these questions and more.

I think the strangest part was that she didn't have a "crazy" or "obsessive" fanbase like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga had during her Teenage Dream era; it seemed like the KatyKats were nonexistent and Katy's fanbase was just the general public. If you would have asked anyone in 2010 who would get 5 #1's from an album, many people would have said Lady Gaga. I remember when people said that Katy was copying Lady Gaga when she wore that cube on her head at the 2011 VMA's. It wasn't until(I feel) the singles from PRISM were launched that she was now in the public conscious as a "big celebrity" along with the Super Bowl. However, it makes me sad that she is no longer "it," and I have stopped keeping up with popular culture since Katy's "Witness" release; Katy Perry brings up nostalgia for me because I remember first hearing "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008 when I was 11, and she just fizzled away by the time I was an adult.

You're actually right. It is strange that her most successful album isn't the most "notable" in terms of fan reception, but Prism is. Nevertheless, as a Little Monster during the ARTPOP/Prism era (which you know had a lot of Lady Gaga vs Katy Perry fanbase wars), I'm a bit bummed that Katy is not one of the main pop girls anymore. I really want her to have a comeback like Lady Gaga did with A Star Is Born. I miss them ruling the charts, streams and award shows together

I would agree that it was probably the best era in pop music ever, as perfect as it could be. Taylor's "1989" and Dua's "Future Nostalgia" came really close to matching it, but it was still Katy who paved them the way. I was in high school when this album came out, and oh gosh, how many memories do these songs evoke. I was happy to spend my adolescence when such great pop music was around. Life was definitely easier back then, at least it seemed so. P.S. "Hummingbird Heartbeat" and "Peacock" definitely deserved a single treatment as well!

My favorite Katy album is Witness, but it's kinda mind blowing to think this was the last big era of the media monoculture era. I'm not even sure something like that could happen again because virtually all media has become fragmented towards specialized markets, so on top of the marketing costs having skyrocketed (since formats that reach 75% of the population like TV and radio don't really exist in any meaningful way anymore, meaning you have to spend way, way more money to reach the same number of people,) that fragmentation means people no longer "talk about the same things" the way they used to, because now everyone can watch whatever they want, listen to whatever they want, etc... it's ultimately good for variety and creativity, and more importantly, for the artists themselves (smaller artists are doing better than ever now, larger artists have way more freedom than they used to, etc...) but it does mean things like Teenage Dream might never happen again. Who knows though. Let's be glad it happened I guess? Even Katy haters can acknowledge it was a special thing. I wish she got that record lol.

I think the last really big monocultural moment in music was when Adele released 25 back in 2015. Also it was the last hurrah of physical media sales right at the doorstep of 2016 when Spotify would takeoff, largely contributing to rap and trap influenced beats becoming popular.

Teenage Dream is a template of how to roll out an album campaign.Everything fell into place with this one.Teenage Dream(the song) is an immaculate piece of pop perfection, sounds pretty basic at the start, even juvenile someone might think, but gradually evolves into majestic.I get emotional each and every time that I listen to it. Props to everyone involved, special props to the magic pen of Bonnie Mckee🪄❤

Teenage Dream is one of my favorite albums to listen to, even though I love the rock feel of One Of The Boys more, but TD is an amazing album. My favorite song is Last Friday Night, and it’s my favorite because it reminds me of a song I wrote in 2005 called Wanna Give It Up, which has the same chord progression.

Almost every POP Icon (Top Queens) has had a HARD flop era: Madonna, Mariah, Gaga.,etc, etc, I feel Katy will get her flowers when she gets a come-back and I think she is on her way to get it! The girls that haven't really "flopped" are: Beyonce and Taylor but, I don't think they have had the highest highs of: Madonna, Mariah, Gaga, or Katy either.

When I was younger and people like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were getting really popular I wrote them off as plastic, soulless pop stars that made music for teenage girls. I still don't really like this type of music that much but I've grown to accept and recognize them as determined individuals with a passion to express what they think through the genres they like. Looking back I even grew fond of records like Katy's One of the Boys. That album and sound is like a time capsule to a simpler time, I think its a very fun listen.

I can't believe this came out in 2010! It still sounds fresh to me - that or time is standing still for me, music wise. Also, I just listened to the single "teenage dream" just now. Parts of it, especially the chorus, reminds me of Tracey Chapman's "Fast Car" lyrically in terms of it being youthful and in the moment. Of course, they sound nothing alike, but its sort of two sides of the same coin IMO.
