Black folks like good music PERIOD! Teena was in right from the start in our household. But we were giving flowers to white artists way before Teena. Hall and Oats, The Average White Band, Boz Skaggs, Bobby Calwell, and many, many more...... We aren't the ones that exclude people based on their race.

A profound and prolific LYRICIST and unmatched and unique VOCALIST!!!! The thing for me about Teena's soulful R&B voice is that it was organic, authentic, genuine, other-worldly and God-inspired. Her inner-soul was influenced by and with SOUL. She didn't just sing soul/R&B music and use it to live off of it as a benefit like some do. I know and feel the difference when others use it. But Teena (Lady T) she respected and honored the people (as a group) that it derived from. She lived soul/R&B AS we do. Her music is proof of that from the beginning to the end.

I'm 63. So wonderful to see younger people appreciating this great singer from back in my day. Thank you for this video. PS Teena Marie was on an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies when she was 8 years old and credited as Tina Marie Brockert. Wonderful lady. 🧡🧡

Lady T was all that! She's a percussionist, keyboardist, guitarist and a vocal beast! She also wrote, arranged and produced her music. She sued Motown and won which led to The Brockert Initiative named after her, which made it illegal for record company to keep an artist under contract without releasing new material.

That ‘releasing new material’ clause’ would backfire on Teena when she was signed to Epic Records when she released a couple of albums that didn’t sell well and they dropped her. They did the same to Luther Vandross.
