The instrument you are asking about is a piano recorded at half speed, then played back at normal speed, which gave the piano the timbre & sound of a harpsichord. The Beatles producer, George Martin wrote and played the instrumental bridge on “In My Life”.

For me it’s either this or The Long And Winding Road. My mom, (rest in peace mom) turned me on to The Beatles when I was 9 years old and it was such an amazing gift.
This track goes to prove that George Martin was the 5th Beatle. He wrote and played the high piano solo which is actually played 1 octave lower at half speed. When the speed was played faster, the octave jumped and the piano sounds almost like a muted harpsichord or a Rhodes piano. If you have Disney+ and you like The Beatles and song writing, I'd highly recommend Get Back. It's 9 hours long, split into 3x 3 hour films but to see some of their famous songs emerge before your eyes is amazing.

fun fact: Martin produced other bands, but never succeeded like with the Beatles. One famous band that he was the producer was America - a great band from de 70s. The 4 lads prom Liverpool were truly great composers that turns Martin better too. They could make music from other dimensions and Martin grow a lot as a producer too. That guys were incredible sourcerers! (Pardon for my terrible english!)

This song gives me nostalgic chills... The solo in the middle is awesome!
The Beatles - the first ever successful pop band and in some quarters were considered the best that's ever existed. And I'm pleased to say that I was there when it first kicked off in Liverpool. I was lucky enough to be a '60's teen. It was a magic time to be that age and experience first hand the wonderful music that was being produced at the time and the music that was yet to come moving from the '60's into the '70's. The two greatest decades for pop/rock music in my opinion!

Dude, this is regarded as one of the greatest love songs of all times. You have no idea how many weddings, receptions, ceremonies, Renewables, proposals, Etc this has been incorporated into. And it's shown up in tons of movies and so forth. One of John Lennon's greatest songs I believe. This whole album was fascinating because it was a huge pivotal album between there earlier years in their later years. It's it's fire. Everything on it is fascinating. But then all of their albums are just really really good. Each in their own way. They were constantly and rapidly evolving. And some of those parts of Abbey Road that you mentioned, oh my God that's some great material. And if you do decide to cover that, do your research first or asking here, because many of those are medleys and designed to run one into the other. And that's how all of us know them and you really can't break them apart. And have you really listened to everything on Magical Mystery Tour? I find that hard to believe. It's one of their albums that didn't do so well right at the time but for the Beatles that means it still did fantastically, but by the time I was listening to a lot in junior high and high school, I realized I loved every song on it very deeply. It's all really fascinating stuff. Revolver came after Rubber Soul and before the other stuff and so it's really also a huge transition album with tons of great material on it. Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a freaking tour of force. It's just phenomenal.

The very best way is to start at the beginning, with Please Please Me, and then go in sequence, because that way you can experience the incredible growth the band achieved in only a few years. Mr Jackson isn’t worth remembering, especially by children
This is a John Lennon song that he wrote right before his 25th Birthday and very mature song writing. This song is a classic as is "Rubber Soul" this Lp was the game changer for the band and popular music. They went from being a pop band to serious, thoughtful songwriters. Not that their early music from 1963-64 isn't great in it's own right, but this went to a new level. Do you know why? Here's why. In 1964 when The Beatles were on their first US tour, they were in NYC and the legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan wanted too meet them. He went to their hotel room and brought along a good friend of his named marijuana and got them high for the first time. They became major league pot heads after this encounter and it changed their music very quickly. You can begin to hear it on their first Lp in 1965 "Help" Lennon's songs were becoming more personal and the follow up Lp "Rubber Soul" is the game changer. Lennon always referred to it as "The Pot Album" and you can hear it. The Lp reeks of reefer, very laid back and a lot more acoustic. Lennon's "Nowhere Man" is a must listen along with his songs "Girl" and "Norwegian Wood" all iconic Lennon songs. A year after this in 66 Lennon and Harrison were onto LSD which resulted in the "Revolver"Lp and maybe their best Album. The single " Paperback Writer/"Rain" released in May 66 just several months before "Revolver" the Lennon song "Rain" is a must listen. The first LSD inspired Lennon song and so many studio firsts on this song. First song with a backwards music and lyrics outro to an end of a song and a lot more going on in this song. Technology had to be created that wasn't in place yet for this song, its great and a must listen. The remix of the "Revolver" Lp was released last September and sounds incredible. As a bonus they they included the remix of this single and both songs sound great. "Rain" is a must listen. I would suggest that any song you listen to from the "Revolver" Lp "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" "The White Album" "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" you want the 50th anniversary remixes of these album's. They sound great. "Revolver" was released in 66 so there wasn't a 50th anniversary remix of it done so they were talking about a about a 60th anniversary release in 2026. We Beatle fans were having none of that and we got it last September. The next big one is "Rubber Soul" and we're hoping for that one maybe later this year like Oct.-Dec. One more great one for you is George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun" from the "Abbey Road " remix and it sounds incredible and there's a nice video with it. Even with the incredible catalogue of Lennon/McCartney songs, this one by Harrison is the #1 streamed Beatles song on Spotify with over 700 million plays, so you kinda got to check it out and maybe, just maybe, my favorite Beatles song if one can pick a favorite Beatles song. Peace ❤

This song is one of my favorites. It will always remind me of that sad day when John Lennon was killed. This was one of the first songs I heard that following morning after I learned of the tragedy. .
One of the best love songs written by John Lennon. The harpsichord sound you hear in the break is actually a piano which is slowed down in the studio. I love seeing young people being shown how the Beatles really influenced music even today. Rubber Soul was a Renaissance album in that it showed the growth of the Beatles to write music which had more substance and also was the start of their experimentation in the studio.
@andyallan2909
Жыл бұрын
Renaissance? Beatles have nothing to do with Renaissance (in any of its guises).Renaissance is a different band that grew out of the ashes of The Yardbirds.
The piano, is the instrument you asked about but there's a twist: “In My Life features a Baroque-styled piano solo by Beatles producer George Martin, who could not match the tempo of the song. The solo was thus recorded at half-tempo and the tape speed was doubled for the final recording, giving the piano solo a unique timbre.”
This song is covered beautifully by Judy Collins on her album "In My Life"
One of my favorites. The Beatles are one of the few bands whose songs don't all sound the same, either instrumentally, messagewise or just general sound.
Finally you arrived to The Beatles! In the 60's songs were short ( less than 3 min) otherwise no one radio station would play them!
Rubber Soul was released December 1965 and is a really great album. Just can´t believe their previous album Help! came just four months earlier the very same year.

Not to mention the DRAMATIC difference in sounds between Help! and Rubber Soul in just 4 months. The Beatles are the G.O.A.T.

I loved this young mans reaction to "in my life". Beatles Rocks! ❤️👍😃
They have SO many different songs and above all; AMAZING songs. But this one is always my number one. It just makes me feel so good and calm. ❤
The way you listen to this song we can see you get the emotion and understanding of the lyrics a really good reaction video without stopping the song every few seconds then no one can absorb what they are listening to
Still has a heavy 50's influence I feel..love the vocals
Revolver is probably their best album, but The White Album would be the most fun to react to because it has so many different genres and some just plain weird songs. Beatles tend to block so good luck.
The magic of the Beatles is the beautiful way in which they express such universal feelings and project them in a voice that we all "and perhaps it is the only occasion in which I dare presumptuously to affirm that we ALL want to express" But not all of us can do it... Their music does it for us... generation after generation. Beautiful song! SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO...!
"In My Life" is one of my very favourite Beatles songs in which John was the principle writer. Such a great song.
In 2021, my great nephew sang this song at my sister's (his grandma's) funeral. Tearing up now as I did then!
I have all those original albums sitting in the music room. Saved my allowance to buy them as soon as they came out. This 2as one of my favorite songs from that album.
This was our wedding song, our first dance - my husband danced with his mom to "When I''m 64" - yeah, we're big Beatles' fans! lol
This song is so good, that every one of the million times I've played it,it's like the first time every time!
That second half of Abbey Road is one long suite of songs that really needs hearing together. "Please Please Me" was their first album. Only six years between then and Abbey Road, which is mind-blowing; today some bands take six years to put out an album!. "In My Life" is one of the world's greatest love songs IMO - simply gorgeous. The keyboard part is a sped-up piano, made to sound like a harpsichord. It was played by their producer, George Martin.
Always great seeing another generation discovering the greatest rock band of all time. OK, I’m a bit one sided, but I grew up watching them on tv and listening to them first on am then fm radio and there’s simply no one else that can match their talent and style. They literally lead music in the 1960’s.
This is one of the best Beatles songs.
I’m old enough to be your grandfather and I am so impressed by your love of great music, music of my pre-teen to my teen-age years. Keep looking into the Beatlles almost endless Catalog of music. You will continue to be amazed.
I really love this song and only recently found out that where the alleged harpsichord sounds, it's actually a piano that George Martin played at a normal tempo and just accelerated the speed of the tape when recording. This news was like an atomic bomb explosion for me! Thank you George for this trick!
I think you'd like "Because" on Abbey Road. It's a beautiful song by John.
@stevedahlberg8680

It's such an incredibly beautiful song and Alice Cooper did a killer version of it later on. He was a huge Beatles fan. If you're familiar with classical music at all, as an intermediate piano student, it's extremely common to learn the Beethoven classic Moonlight Sonata. Well at the time that John wrote this, he and Yoko were hanging out basically impressing each other with how talented and intense they were. And so, he was teaching her how to play Beethoven Moonlight Sonata and then once she thought she really had it down, he was kidding her mostly and he said well in that case do what Beethoven used to do, be able to look at a piece and play it backwards. And she immediately started trying to do that, and what he was hearing drove him to immediately go right out the song Because. And if you listen to it in that light, you will hear exactly what I mean.

Rubber Soul flips back and forth with Revolver as my 1A/1B albums by the Beatles. Both of them have AWESOME tunes and any of those tracks are worth checking out.
A lot of people say that Rubber Soul was sort of the turning point of The Beatles and I would agree. Before this album they had a lot of amazing songs however the vast majority of em were sort of your typical love song that everybody was doing. They decided to stray a bit from that starting with Rubber Soul and this song (despite being a love song itself) is a perfect example of John Lennon starting to not only grow as a songwriter but as a man as well. In my life is about John self reflecting and coming to understand how he got to where he is by looking back and appreciating everything and everyone (good and bad) for making him the man that he was at the time
The half of Abbey Road you didn't recognize was actually part of the "Long One" medley... Evening from "You Never Give Me Your Money" through "The End" is meant to be one continuous piece of music.
My wife and I had this as our first dance. It's amazing.
The faces this kid make i priceless ! Rubber Soul was my first Beatle album...I was 12 years old...
Great reaction . I'm 70 years old , so I always enjoy when I see someone say ==========. ' Beatles , Stevie Wonder , Antonio Carlos Jobim , OK , let's go " . Inevitably 10 second into the song ----- they are transformed , just like Was , way back when .
Love ❤️ this song. Its John as u can tell by the lyrics. I want it played at my "Celebration of Life" after I'm gone.
Oh yeah, that keyboard was a clavinet. I have played one in a live show a few times, it's pretty fun. There was a fascination with slightly older keyboards like clarinets and farfisa organs for example, just in general around that time. That was their genius producer George Martin playing that baroque-style keyboard solo on the clarinet. Although it's sped up on tape somehow.
@LeChaunce
Жыл бұрын
It's not a clavinet. It's a Steinway upright piano, played at half-speed and then sped up because George Martin couldn't play it to tempo. The sped-up tape gives it that clavinet/harpsichord quality. You can find the slowed-down version on KZread.
About the instrumental bridge...from Wikipedia: "At that time, Lennon had not decided what instrument to use, but he subsequently asked George Martin to play a piano solo, suggesting "something Baroque-sounding".[2] Martin wrote a Bach-influenced piece that he found he could not play at the song's tempo. On 22 October, the solo was recorded with the tape running at half speed, so when played back at normal pace the piano was twice as fast and an octave higher, solving the performance challenge and also giving the solo a unique timbre, reminiscent of a harpsichord." Studio innovation right there.
The solo was a guest appearance of their producer. Although it sounds a bit like a harpsichord, it was a sped up piano. If you listen to the end of it, it is physically impossible to play it at normal speed lol.
The second half of Abbey Road is all one connected experience, almost like a symphonic piece. (It was all on one side when the album came out.) It encapsulates most every style the Beatles had and seems like a summary of what made them great - musically, lyrically and philosophically.
This song shows so much longing. I love it and now I have so many memories of the times that have gone. Bless you John I love you forever 🙏

Yes! Sounds like a lot of the songs he was naming that he said he never heard is what I think you're talking about. If he doesn't know Abbey Road by heart, we need to have a talk with his pops! Lol
They are just so talented; it's as simple as that
In America "Meet the Beatles" was their first Capitol Records album. I think "Rubber Soul" in America was their 6 th American Capitol album released December 1965. I was in 10 Grade in High School. The keyboard was a piano that Paul played, and George Martin The Beatles record producer modified the sound of. There was an early Beatles cartoon show mostly for kids, There was also their feature animated movie, "Yellow Submarine". The second side of Abbey Road songs Mean Mr. Mustard, etc was a continuous medley of songs. By the way, the "Please Please Me" only released in England initially. It was released after Capitol Records "Meet the Beatles" in America.
On Abbey Road side 2, starting with "You Never Give Me Your Money", Is a medley that lasts the rest of the side through "The End" The keyboard part of In My Life was played by producer George Martin, then sped up a tad to make that effect.

It must be wonderful hearing Beatle tracks for the first time.
This is my all time Beatles song thank you.
I love the super minimal drumming, everything stands out that way, from the bell of the cymbal to the brief high hat notes to the single snare snaps.
Thanks for reacting to one of may favorite song .....In my Life. During thOse years we weren’t used to let anybody else play an instrument......that electric piano section really caught my eye. Later I found out that none of the Beatles play that piano. Greetings from mexico.
You're killing it with the reactions man!
I grew up listening to the Beatles from the womb, lol. When I see your face I remember how much their music meant to me and helped me get through the tough times growing up. My friends brother was older than us and so we learned the White Album first, then Revolver, Abbey Road and the list goes on. I'm so happy that young people still enjoy their music.
John Paul and George in their teens combed Liverpool record shops for 1950s American pop/rock records (including early 60s Am girl groups such as The Shirrels). They covered dozens of those songs in late 50s local gigs and early 60s Hamburg clubs-then in 62-63 (with an eccentric human metronome in Ringo) found themselves in British Beatlemania. By 1964 they were re-inventing rock n roll for good, worldwide…and the rest is modern rock/pop history😊
I love this song. I'm a Beatles fan from years past.
This is my favourite knowing this was a day in the news which I totally relate to. It set precedents for all musicians to experiment with different sounds.
Silas, the keyboard solo was played by their producer George Martin, he slowed down the tape during recording so that when it was played back at normal speed it was sped up to sound more like a harpsichord. Definitely more Beatles, so many great songs like Helter Skelter, Taxman, Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Long and Winding Road, A Day in The Life, And Your Bird Can Sing, Don't Let Me Down, I'm Only Sleeping and I Want You are just a few of the cornucopia of treats in their catalogue. You should do a whole album from eitther Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper or Abbey Road they are all top tier albums.
Nothing has come close to these LEGENDS in the last 30 year's.
This is one of their shortest songs if not the shortest. I love this song it is one of my favourites. The instrument sounded like a harpsicord.
I got into the Beatles last summer and I’ve fallen in love with there music.
That drum sound man (especially the cymbal bell) crystal clear.
It's a song about introspection! The good and the bad elements that make up ones life! Well done!
This wonderful song was finished recorded in November 11th, 1965. The piano was played by George Martin, and the album was released in UK on December 3, 1965 distributed by Parlophone (now owned by UMG), and the US version, released three days later distributed by Capitol Records, but the difference is that the UK version has 14 tracks while the US one has 12 tracks, all in stereo. By the way , please react more Beatles songs!
You my young friend have alot to look forward to and hear. I think you’ll like most of it. Lucky you! 🍀
always in my top 5 of Beatles songs. You were right that the solo was a keyboard with an altered effect. While they were on break from recording the song George Martin created this Baroque sounding solo (per John's request) by playing the piano half speed then running it through at a faster speed which gave it a harpsichord effect
Yes, absolutely need more Beatles! Beatles/The Word and also The Word Remixed😊😊

The Beatles put out 18 lps in the USA. I have all of them but not all. Yellow Submarine was an animated movie & there was an animated cartoon when i was young in the early 60's. Instrument was the Harpisolcord. The Beatles did a lot things no other rock/pop bands did before them, in sounds & productions.
