Ok so just to point this misunderstanding out, She is the significant other, He is claiming that after the breakup she was really cruel in how she just cut all ties and the song is a conversation between them afterward and he says to her " I guess now you are just somebody that I used to know." To which she starts talking about how he always blamed everything on her and made her think everything was her fault and " I thought you said you wouldn't get hung up on someone you used to know?" throwing his own line back in his face because he is doing exactly what she described.
She is the ex telling her side. She wants him to move on but he was still treating her like his emotional support so she had to cut him off. He was "so unhappy" and it was "all her fault" but now he won't stop bothering her so she changed her number.

The woman is the ex he is singing about. He made it her fault, but she said he "screwed her over" and made it all about What she had done. He mentioned her having her friends get her records and changing her number. She must have realized he was a problem and had to be drastic. She said they would be friends, probably to get rid of him. He feels betrayed due to the drastic pull away. He is hurt and angry and says now she is just somebody that she used to know.

Yeah, a woman doesn't send her friends to get her stuff out of your shared living arrangement, and change her number, as the results of a normal, safe breakup. The point in the song is supposed to be that the guy is completely oblivious to how toxic he is. Using her side to flesh out this story is so well done, and such a great subversion of the breakup narrative.

Plus making someone feel disposable and forgettable (you'd just be someone I used to know and I wouldn't spare a thought) is one of the basic tactics of an abuser / manipulator. She's throwing that back at him - you said you wouldn't care, why are you still clinging on...

he also felt alone when they were together. he was happy it was over. he knew it wouldnt work out. but that doesnt make it hurt less when she leaves. he still loved her, realizing how muchj it hurts when she treats him liek a stranger and acts like they were nothing. it had to end but it hurts worse than anything. even if you fight all the time and you cant stand her and she causes you so much trouble, having someone you loved treat you like a stranger is rough. you cant live with her but you cant live without her. i feel like both of them were hurt. neither is wrong or right. but breaking up was best have to let her go.

@@HollowGolem it is a beautiful song and video but i feel his pain as well. even if it was all his fault, even if she deserved better and gave him what he deserved. he still hurts. nothing hurts worse than a woman who used to love you and told you she was so happy she could when you were together leaves and suddenly she act like you were nothing and she never cared for you. you never know how much you care for her until its over and shes gone forever. you cant live with her but you cant live without her.
One of the most intense choruses without big volume or "bigness" Great vocals from both. Great tune!!
The video is a metaphor for the relationship. It colors them both into a single piece of art, comprised of the background and the two people. As the relationship breaks down you can see the paint disappear from his partner's body as she's leaving the painting, but he's still trapped. So from his POV given in the lyrics, she was being cruel in their breakup, but she can see that he's not able to move on (still "stuck in the painting") and has to remove herself entirely. Leaving him feeling like he was abandoned by 'somebody he used to know'.

he was glad that it was over, but it hurts when shes gone.
Kimbra was perfect for this song. The end where the paint was removed was a perfect ending. She is no longer in the picture. Had her friends collect her records then changed her number.😂

I always try to find reactions to that song, but never find any
erm. they are both talking about their relationship. he can get over what it used to be, but the manner of the break up hurt him. she was not prepared to stay in relationship or in contact with the person who habitually blamed her for both their faults especially when he was boastful of being able to walk away from people "he used to know"
They are literally having a dialogue with one another...him even looking at her through the end breaking eye contact with you...the viewer! He starts off with his version and we then hear her side as well
No Kimbra is the person he's letting go. She's not the new one
Your mom has great taste ... Lol 😉 .. great song and video .. a couple of billion people can't be all wrong lad ~ 😊

Look Gotye up. He's an Australian who left the business after his incredible one hit wonder. He's been making alot of music the last 12 years. He just won't participate in corporate world of music. Also Kimbra from New Zealand is not a girl. She's a woman. 2013 they won Best Record of the year, Best Pop Duo, and Best Group Performance as well. Prince awarded them these honors at the Grammys. It was #1 in 25 countries. Gotye and Kimbra wouldn't sell their souls to corporate music industry. . One of the best one hit wonders. I have tremendous respect for both of them. Please get informed. You're review was very disappointing. Of course you have the right to your own response. 1.4 billion views says alot. Please do some research and listen again. Didn't seem to me you got anything right. Like I said too young to get it. Stick to metal if that's your 1st love. Thus is meant to be informative. Hope you read me response. It's harsh, but I want to help you understand and grow. I'm a teacher lol.
Wow!! This was probably the first time I've gotten the actual interpretation of this song. Very cool
Unfortunately, this teenager's capacity for empathy ran out about 1/3 of the way through the song. I just hope he will hear this again when he's an adult and understand it for the first time.

This fella has a good mind, sharp, tunes in, logical, but has emotion to connect. Let it flow bro, well done.
Love the video! I think Gotye is unique. Singular style!
Per Google: The name "Gotye" is a pronunciation respelling of "Gauthier", the French cognate of his Dutch given name "Wouter".
If he is a teenager he was very well alive when this song came out so I'm kind of surprised this is his first time hearing this when it was considered the number 1 song of the year and super overplayed. Won record of the year at the grammy's
Love the song, never understood the lyrics. He’s simultaneously apathetic about the relationship and devastated (to the point of yelling)that he was cut off.

The male character is a manipulative jerk. He's whining about how she's been so mean, it's not fair, when he admits they weren't happy anyway. But she left him and has cut him off brutally so he feels slighted by her and is complaining about it. It's why the female character is so much more direct and firm.

Some people have said he is playing a narcissist who ‘paints’ (pun alarm!) his ex partner in a bad light and then she gives her perspective, but his response is lukewarm and lacks empathy.
"It sounds happy..." It's in the key of D Minor. *cough*
I really like the body language in this video, like when he heaves this heavy sigh when she starts singing, how she is yelling in his ear trying to get his attention, then giving up.
I've always liked this somehow....so different.
Also one other thing.. She removed herself from the picture.. as in the phrase is literally in the video. The mosaic is the relationship. At the end she leaves. But he is still left in it.
Dude, connecting the video with the song(fragmenting etc.} was brilliant !!! I whish more people would see this reaction.
The paint reflects the fractured part of him.
I think he's still broken. She is healing and thats why the paint is going away on her but not him. I certainly could be wrong.
Ok but there’s no way you haven’t heated this on the radio playing non stop from 2012 - 2013
I'll tell you what, you hit it right on, AND, you are the only one I've seen that hit it right. I think there are more than 2 billion views on this video and another couple of billion views of the same song live and no one gets it right. Great job young man. I like about every kind of music but I am not into metal or not much into most rap. You ought to think about taking a look at other genera as well.
Goyte was Wally's stage name in Melbourne Australia in the days when he played in a band called The Basics (Melbourne University Students). My daughters saw them at the Northcote club. He is into MAKING music and all sorts of musical instruments (plays many). Being a pop star was never important to him (I think). He said the song took him a year to finally write. The art is based on a piece his dad painted. Where are you Wally and what are you doing. Have searched and cant find anything. Hearts a Mess is a great video.
Billy Strings - Dust in a Baggie - the one where he is sitting on the couch
I actually agree with your interpretation. The girl is the current future ex and he’s so hung up he’s ruining things. I saw it as her being the next person he used to know.
Such a great song
She's the same girl from the same relationship. She was in it together, then he gets painted out, and she gets set free. He's in the background and in pain, in the background, hurting, hung up, like a painting in the past, she's moved on.
GO-T-AIR he is Australian/Dutch and the woman Kimbra is New Zealander.
I know it that the song gona get u like wait a minute at the end. This song is so anatomically electric. The dude went through heavy love pain
“This guy’s mouth is wide and it keeps bothering me.” 😂
I got major stalker vibes from this song, having been in a an abusive relationship which ended, and the promises of we’ll still be friends, used as an excuse to get out, just to get away, then ghost them because they won’t let it go, and try to interfere in any future relationships. I can say, I’ve definitely used those “it’s not you it’s me” excuses to RUN
11:10 I think you've got the idea...that little black star paint on his face is what art terminology calls, "A focal point" but you see how the rest of the painting is abstract, meaning his "Focus" is on the prior relationship in his head, but it metaphorically broke him as the painting almost looks like shattered glass... leading her to color herself out of his painting or life when she realized that his "Brokenness" was seeping into her...also notice that her side is predominantly green...symbolizing the unity of (mother) nature, juxtaposed against the fractious and almost colorless (save for maroon or black) nature of man...but that's just my reading into it...lol...
This song came out when I was a junior in high school. I’m sure that makes me an “old lady” compared to you 😂😂 . I’ve always like this song. Sad lyrics put to a fun tune.
I think at 7:20, I believe the girl is singing from her POV, and is quoting him.
Guidelines for this channel is epic.😂
I always feel like he is getting more fractured as time goes on but that she is actually healing
I agree with you she is another relationship that didn’t work out because he is still stuck on the original breakup. He hasn’t gotten over the breakup his heart being broken. She kept thinking she was at fault, he led her on to believe he was over it but she finally realized he wasn’t. She was tired of having to read into everything he was saying. Then when she make sounds I believe it was symbolic of him not seeing or hearing her as he continues to moan about his breakup. So she frees herself and then becomes yet another somebody he used to know. I totally agree with your analogy of the fragmenting and complication and how in a new relationship she got sucked into it.
my interpretation was that she caught him hung up on somebody that he used to know. he wasnt happy in the relationship. he was glad it was over. but you cant live without her either. it still hurts when she leaves and acts like he was nothing to her. never know how much she means until shes gone and its too late. both sides were hurt. neither is really right or wrong. but shes gone and out of the picture and out of his life forever.
Perfect!!!
We love the song too
This dude's face went to kinda happy to a depressed face in the beginning of the song
I think one of the reasons the song has so many views is because it's not an American song but it resonates with everybody who's been in a relationship at some point
I love your take on the video.
You're awesome! Loved your video with your Dad, now I hear your Mom in the background - so glad she suggested this
He's gorgeous Goyte ✨
I think he sounds like Sting during the chorus.
Admittedly, he does resemble Joaquin Phoenix in Joker, but try not to allow that to retract from the extraordinary portrayal of the serene dismissal of what we all thought was the love of our lives. This wiping clean is necessary for some and absolutely a nuclear blast to the gonads of many. I love the way he becomes a mosaic in the background of her life, a mere accessory. So authentic and reverberating. I recognize THAT! We professed everything to each other, now I'm an afterthought. Dire Straits, "Romeo and Juliet". 'I used to have a thing with him'! I guess you're gone now. You are missed!
It IS the girl from the previous relationship. She is just mentioning she had similar issues with the relationship that he did and when they said theyd remain friends, he remained hung up on what they had been instead of just moving on. They both have valid points though. His being that she didnt HAVE to erase herself from his life completely and act like they were never together and as such making him feel as though the time they spent together was worthless to her. And hers being that instead of moving on and just leaving the past in the past hes still stuck on what they had been instead of focusing more on HIS future, granted if she hadnt done all those things he complained about in his chorus than he likely wouldn't be hung up on her as the closure given by simply talking to each other would provide them both with assurance that although it was over that they didnt HATE each other. Since she DID do those things hes hung up on the past wondering if he meant anything at all and concerned about his own value as a person. But, its not her responsibility to assure him of that, and shes right as well. She did what she thought was best for her and neither of them actually WANTED the relationship to continue, so she moved on in the way that suited her the best and he clearly doesnt like the way that was because hes hung up on her actions after they ended it instead of just moving on. Its a great demonstration of the general rule that there is one persons story, then the other persons story, and somewhere in there is the truth. But it cant be known without knowing what BOTH of them were thinking. And that there doesnt have to be one person whos wrong in their actions or even anyone thats wrong in that respect.
Relationships are complicated. Manipulation and playing games, being insensitive to the other. But I also felt that the girl is the one he broke up with but still hanging on to. I loved the line” resignation to the end, always the end”. Meaning never being sure the next relationship will last, they will always fall short of perfect and satisfying. I felt so lonely in your company. People in relationships for the sake of being in relationships often for too long when they are better off alone. And some people being able to make a clean break and others insisting on hanging on.
I'm only liking it becuz you listened to your mom's choice..and it's a great reaction! Yay win! Another artist to please have a listen to is The Cure 's Friday + Depeche Mode's Somebody ..it's similar vocal softness and raspy-ness combined. Have a listen please. Ask your mom if it's a good choice ❤

They are painting us a literal picture
My kids are just somebody’s that I used to grow
His mouth is kind of weird. You're right. It is a great song showing how the guy can't seem to let go of past relationships and how they affect him. Even though the relationship was not what he was looking for, he was hurt that she severed ties. She felt like he made her walk on eggshells and blamed her for everything. She said the usual "we can still be friends" but she cut him out and moved on. She took herself out of the picture.
Imagine having low expectations on a song with 1.7 billion views...

I disagree with your interpretation, but I must say that it is super-interesting to think about it in that way. Thanks for giving me a new way to think about a song I’ve known for over a decade.
The artist is his father.
You look related to Gotye. Weird coincidence. Your analysis was not bad, but incorrect. Your mother being a part of this makes it more fun and interesting. She's a "keeper".
This is what I took from it after putting the information from their separate verses together: He felt lonely in her company because he never got over somebody else. He tried to resign himself to the fact that he wasn't happy, but he kept getting angry at her for little things and she was always feeling like she did something wrong. He hurt her self-esteem; finally she realized the truth that he was hung up on another girl, and then she was just DONE. She didn't want to see him again, ever, not even to be friends or pick up her stuff from their apartment. Then he felt unfairly treated, because from his perspective he was kind of doing her a favor to commit to a relationship with her in the first place, and she was ungrateful for all the times he tried to swallow his feelings and make it work with her.
Watch him live
Gotye may not be your thing. Think you would really enjoy Jeff Buckley. Listen to ‘ Grace’ or ‘You Should’ve come over’ for starters. Amazing singing, lyrics & guitar. The best.
