Teen driver in crash that killed 5 children had no license

A teen driver killed in a one-vehicle crash that also took the lives of four young relatives did not have a driver's license or permit and may have fallen asleep or become distracted before the SUV veered off a New York parkway, officials said Monday. The teen driver was 16 years old.

@Bradley Smith it's not the choice of a child made its what the parents neglected to inform their child. My parents informs me never to mess around with sharp objects fire firearms and vehicles especially ever since I was a child and I would ask about driving they would say that it is a dangerous weapon that needs to be respected and you need to have your faculties about you. And I like a child when I was one with climb into my parents car in the garage and anything but I was always informed of the risks and dangers of different things in this world. And also I was extremely inquisitive so what my parents would do would be to hide things like the keys to a car for example. Throughout my life I was always told the dangers of things and never in my life did I ever think it would be smart to take one of my parents cars. The main motivator behind it was that it is dangerous my father worked for the city doing construction and Highway Construction so I was always informed. The parents here could have done something different

Parents teach your children that No means No and is a complete sentence at a young age. Stop giving in to them on everything as you are doing them no favors. Teach accountability for thoughts and actions. Having said that and them knowing that they will make decisions to do what they know they shouldn't. An example would be every adult in America who gets behind the wheel of a car after drinking. They know they shouldn't but they'll take the chance for any number of reasons they tell themselves. Eventually someone will crash, get hurt or die because of that choice.

How tragic, all from one familly. That said, parents should never let a 16 year old drive around their younger children with no adult supervision. Was the 17 year old at fault for letting the boy drive, even still, no adults and 6 children, where were the parents?

My guess is they snuck out w/the adults rented car. Accident happened after midnight, so parents very well could have been in bed. Unfortunately, kids not afraid of consequences for bad behavior, do dangerous things all the time, for ‘thrills’. To pull in your sibs & cousins, just as ignorant, is just how young, foolish minds work. The driver had no license, or even a permit! The surviving child who is alive b/c he saved himself getting out of the car before it burst into flames, will have more info to give, when he is able. The trauma he’s going through could still leave more questions, than answers, however. Just too tragic to comprehend. Prayers out to the victims devastated families. 🙏

Our parents ‘educated’ us well. We never dared to take car keys. Anytime, anywhere. We worked to buy our own cars & that’s what we drove. While working to pay the insurance on them, too. We had _consequences_ for bad behavior. Right from the get go, before we started school. Yes, we did things we shouldn’t have & paid a high price, that taught us to think real hard about the next time, if there was one. When it came to a car... *Never.* We all (5) turned out fine. No arrests & college grads. We don’t all have kids, but the ones who do, didn’t allow them to get away w/murder, like so many do now. They’re not as responsible as we were, IMO, but they too, graduated fine & no probs w/police. Many kids are a product of their parenting environment. Especially younger. As adults, you are more free to change the rules, if you desire. Unfortunately, too many went in the opposite direction for their own kids. And society sees the result of that. :/

? What other car? It was a single car accident b/c the unlicensed 16YO failed to make a turn & went straight into a boulder & tree, having the car burst in flames. Kid didn’t even have a permit! Out joy riding after midnight. So unfathomable for the parents & grief. The survivor, when able, hopefully will shed some light on it. But obviously the bottom line still remains. Kids taking a car, & doing what they knew was wrong & dangerous. Not thinking of any consequences at all. B/C that’s what too many do. Act w/o thinking, b/c they’re not raised w/consequences. ‘Parenting’ holds responsibility for that. We were raised _never to dare_ take car keys. *Major consequences.* And we knew, b/c we _always_ had consequences for unacceptable behavior towards our parents, each other, & others. No one ever even thought to drive before we had our permits & had to be w/one of our parents to learn. We all passed for our license w/o a hitch, & we were careful never to have a car full of friends w/us. The state rule was no more than 1, for the first year, if 16. And no night driving. 17 gave you 2 others. But yes, a couple times I know I snuck a 3rd in. Too paranoid to try more, b/c if someone saw me & told my parents...my car would be taken from me. No thanks! And none of that never happened till we made enough $ to buy our own used cars. AND, we all paid our own insurance, too. When we couldn’t afford to keep our cars afloat, we had a big yard that they were parked in, till we could again. I personally took the bus to work till I got back on the road. We never were allowed to drive our parents cars w/o them in it w/us. As it should be w/more expensive cars w/bell’s & whistles & kids behind the wheel. Too many distractions, w/o cell phones like today, on top of it! It was always a thrill to drive them, but we were well aware of our boundaries. If parents raised their kids to be more respectful & responsible of them & others, & gave them deserved consequences for inappropriate behavior, instead of showering them w/expensive iPhones & paying for everything else they whine for today, we wouldn’t have a lot of the issues we do w/youth now. And plenty of families would still be in tact. Thanks for reading my rant. ;) I haven’t read anything about another car anywhere. Even if there was, it doesn’t excuse kids joyriding after midnight who aren’t even legally permitted to do so. Thankfully one of them got out & he’s alive b/c of it. And those parents didn’t lose a 3rd child.
